We have just returned to the Isle of Wight from a 3 night stay in this pub to escape Cowes Week and want to say we had an excellent time. My partner Nigel booked a room for three nights after finding the details on LateRooms and we arrived Thursday early evening. The landlord, John, is a very helpful guy and his bar and waiting staff were all really friendly. Nigel got his guitar out on our first evening and serenaded some of the regulars-and by the end of our break there, we have made good friends with some of the locals. In fact, we ended up going to an Elvis tribute bop in the local village hall on one evening and having a lovely Indian meal with them the next night.
The room we had (double) was basic but clean and very quiet-you wouldn't know you were in a pub! The breakfasts were huge and well cooked and presented. We didn't manage to have an evening meal there as they don't serve food in the evenings but the locals recommended The George just down the road which is very good for food. Dogs are very welcome which I liked as I had to leave my unruly Springer Spaniel at home so it was nice to see well behaved dogs!
All in all-an excellent stay. Even though the Islanders are said to be friendly, we were taken aback and thrilled by the friendliness of everyone in the pub-and in Mere itself!
We will definately come back to the Butt of Sherry as we have new friends there now!
