The Balmoral on the promenade in Port Erin isn't a hotel as such but neither is it a typical B&B or guest house. It has a spacious lounge and a bar! There is also a smaller sitting room with a 2nd TV in it.
The Balmoral is located on a prominent site above a number of shops with a great outlook of the bay, sea and surrounding area and especially from the dining room or sea facing bedrooms. The approach to the reception area is by a main staircase from ground level and there are some 20 plus steps to be managed, which might be off putting for people with heavy luggage or elderly visitors. There is then a further flight of stairs to the bedrooms. The bedrooms are very clean and comfortable with tea making facilities etc but no TV.
Mary, the owner, is a very welcoming hostess and really makes you feel at home and there is no sense that you are not welcome back at any stage during the day. In fact Mary might well go off herself and leave you/ trust you to be there on your own.
Breakfast is cooked to order and was of an excellent quality.
Port Erin might not have a lot to offer the tourist but if you want to base yourself in this area for a few nights you will not find a better place to stay. So much so that we tried to return within hours of leaving the Balmoral only to find that it was full. At some point this fine hostelry will be revisited.
