“Better than I expected and will be revisited”
Reviewed 6 August 2013

The Balmoral on the promenade in Port Erin isn't a hotel as such but neither is it a typical B&B or guest house. It has a spacious lounge and a bar! There is also a smaller sitting room with a 2nd TV in it.

The Balmoral is located on a prominent site above a number of shops with a great outlook of the bay, sea and surrounding area and especially from the dining room or sea facing bedrooms. The approach to the reception area is by a main staircase from ground level and there are some 20 plus steps to be managed, which might be off putting for people with heavy luggage or elderly visitors. There is then a further flight of stairs to the bedrooms. The bedrooms are very clean and comfortable with tea making facilities etc but no TV.

Mary, the owner, is a very welcoming hostess and really makes you feel at home and there is no sense that you are not welcome back at any stage during the day. In fact Mary might well go off herself and leave you/ trust you to be there on your own.

Breakfast is cooked to order and was of an excellent quality.

Port Erin might not have a lot to offer the tourist but if you want to base yourself in this area for a few nights you will not find a better place to stay. So much so that we tried to return within hours of leaving the Balmoral only to find that it was full. At some point this fine hostelry will be revisited.

Room Tip: Sea facing rooms are a must if they are available

This hotel is located above a shop or something like that in a two- or three-storey house. The town is very small, and the house is in about 10 min walking time from bus stop, railway station and the few places of interest. It actually sits on an upper-level seafront which, I guess, must offer great views when the weather is fine (which was not my case).
Apparently I got a family room with a queen bed and another two-level smaller bed (35 pound per night). I noticed that the heating system worked well and the washroom was clean and also in good condition. The window looked at the sea, but the rain spoilt the view.
What I particularly liked about this hotel is the dining room, on the second floor. It is very nicely decorated with supposedly antique porcelain plates, has high ceiling and generally great setup. A couple of tables are placed opposite the huge window, so I naturally sit there. That was the place where I finally decided to try Manx Kippers for my breakfast, kind of smoked herring produced in the Isle of Man. And it was really delicious! Highly recommended!

stayed in the Balmoral with friends for a weekend break in july 2012. Hostess Mary was very friendly and accomodating, tray of tea on arrival (no cost) breakfast was lovely and whole stay was perfect. Would definately stay again and would recommend for short stays, overlooks the beach of Port Erin.

Room Tip: Looking over the beach vere lovely if possible especially at sunset

Visited with a group to walk and use the railways- The hostess was very helpful. The kippers for breakfast were cooked perfectly (and of hearty size) - Our bedroom overlooked the bay with great views - would I stay there again? Yes

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the bay

Located overlooking the beach at Port Erin, this hotel offers great views at sunset with alleged opportunities to see basking sharks in the bay (we didn't see any). The ladies who run the hotel are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is traditional English and very substantial. Our room was small but perfectly comfortable with fresh milk provided for tea/coffee. There was no TV in the bedroom but the hotel does have a very pleasant TV lounge with lots of books and magazines for wet days. Overall a very pleasant place to stay in this very attractive small sea-side village.

We have stayed there with a small group for a few days to explore the Isle of Man and do some walking. It's a small hotel with great views over the bay of Port Erin from the common room and bedrooms - we even spotted a shark from the common room! Good breakfast. Friendly owners. The price of 33 GBP per night for a single room is ok.
The only negative point was the extremely small bathroom.
