“Excellent Guest House”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

My husband booked up this Guest House online since we were catching the mid morning ferry to Islay. From the outset of booking Kirsten was more than helpful, from emailing us back to make sure that we had the correct Tarbert to suggesting we might wish to book a table in their restaurant (Scotts) since they are open to be public and do get busy.

Her husband was waiting for us to arrive which I thought excellent since we had only specified that we would arrive somewhere between 2pm and 4pm since we didn't know how long it would take us to drive through Glasgow given that the Commonwealth Games were about to start. He showed us to our room, (Jura) and explained about the breakfast menu card. The room was spotless and very comfortable with a gorgeous view over the harbour and had an ensuite.

After spending a couple of hours wandering around Tarbert we went back for our evening meal in the restaurant. The food was excellent and Kirsten's service was superb. I had the Scallops and Chorizo with pasta and whilst I did see that someone else did not rate it I can honestly say that mine tasted delicious. The only thing I will mention and this is just my personal preference and in no way reflects on their food is that, had I know when we booked our table that their menu was Italian based we might have not booked and gone to one of the other local places since whilst I am on the west coast of Scotland I love tasting as much local seafood as I can. This is in no way a criticism of their menu in any way since I thoroughly enjoyed my meal but I can get Italian based meals where I stay anytime. I will add that they were fully booked that night and given the other places that do meals this does say a great deal about their food.

We ordered the full Scottish breakfast the night before since Kirsten had told us that the ferry terminal was only a 15 minute drive away from Tarbert and we would have plenty of time to get there, which we did. The breakfast was gorgeous and yes, whilst we did pay extra for it it was well worth it. I notice that this is a growing trend now for establishments to charge extra for a full Scottish breakfast and to be honest I really don't have a problem with this. If you go abroad all you will get is the Continental breakfast. What Kirsten and her husband set out for the continental breakfast was gorgeous and well worth it and the full Scottish was well worth the extra money.

Would I stay here again? Oh yes. Would I recommend it to other travellers? Most certainly. To be honest the only downside that they have is that there is no off street parking. You have to park on the main road. That to be honest is the worst thing I have to say about this establishment.

Room Tip: The front rooms have a gorgeous view over Tarbert harbour

This guest house has its own restaurant and is located right next to the harbour. It was easy to find and has parking right outside. The welcome from the owners was very warm and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast choices were advised the night before so a freshly cooked breakfast was ready at the time I requested. Although I didn't eat at their small restaurant in the evening the menu looked interesting. Only downside was the complete lack of real ale in the pubs in Tarbert.

We stayed here, as many do, on our way to catch a ferry to Islay. The room was cute, comfy and clean. The hosts were very welcoming and accommodating (as others have said, they don't live on site, but they made every effort to find out what time we would be arriving and be there to greet us - it wasn't a problem at all not having them on site). We had dinner in their bistro, which was absolutely delicious! Breakfast in the morning was quite nice. No complaints here and we would stay again next time we are passing through!

Room Tip: They have all of their rooms listed on their website so you can take a look before you call to book.

On the plus side, the hotel is in an attractive location right on the harbor in Tarbert. Our room was nicely furnished and looked out over the harbor. The host was friendly and breakfast quite good (and served in time for us to catch the ferry to Islay.)

On the minus side, we had to call a number and wait to check in - no one is on site. Also, this small street comes alive at night with loud diesel engines (ship and truck) and squaking gulls. We didn't sleep much.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Arran room, which was attractive and comfortable. If you're a light sleeper, b...

Thank you for describing our property as quaint and atmospheric. It is a lovely harbour side property. If I may clarify a couple of points. This is a typical B&B and not a hotel so if we are in the village or out walking the number on the door is for the quest to call us if they arrive at a different time. We always ask arrival time but as guests are generally on holiday they don't always know an exact time. Regarding the fishing quay, this is primarily a daytime shellfish port and by far the majority of activity is during the daytime which is great to watch. Now and then there is evening activity but it is the exception and not the norm. As for the seabirds and any noise, it is a coastal property after all.

We stayed in a double ensuite with wifi. Room was cosey, comfortable, very clean with tea and coffee facilities and tv.There were lovely walks with views of Tarbert right beside b&b. Food was gorgeous and John and Kristin couldn't have been nicer. Highly recommend this establishment.

We stayed here for 3 nights while doing the first two stages of the Kintyre Way. John and Kristin were very friendly and helpful. We had two rooms Eigg and Gigha. Eigg is a twin at the front of the house, the bathroom and toilet are just across the landing. Don't let this put you off, we didn't find it a problem and the view from the front window is great and you can sit there watching all the activity on the fish quay. Gigha was the single room at the back with its own bathroom both rooms were nice and clean and tidy. We ate there one night, with the food freshly cooked and tasty. Breakfast is pre ordered which we found worked great for us, as its there very promptly and allowed us to book our taxi with confidence. The porridge and breakfasts were very nice.
All in all a nice place to stay and would recommend.
Thank you to John and Kristen

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper Eigg can have some noise during the night from the Fish Quay but the view...
