“Drab exterior hides great food and good customer service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2011

Passing thru Tarbert with family, needing lunch and wanting basically seafood. So glad we chose the Cafe Barge. Wonderful fresh seafood, with friendly, knowledgeable staff. Seafood soup, white anchovies, scallops and seafood stew were enjoyed by all family members.

We also went on deck and had dessert sitting in the sunshine. Great service.

Staff informed us that they buy the squat lobsters and scallops fresh from the tiny, stone building beside the ferry pier - we had to buy some and so glad we did! Easy to miss the building (even when we were using the ferry) - basically trade oriented, but will sell to the public. Had them the next night....OMG fab!

Only downside is that it's a bit of a pain if you aren't completely mobile - seating area is downstairs, inside the barge.

Overall, a very pleasant experience.

“A hidden gem.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2011

Strolling through Tarbert yesterday, looking for a light lunch and a taste of the local seafood we chanced upon the Cafe Barge. So glad we tried it despite the rather forbidding outside. Menu was varied and unusual with plenty of light choices, cooking was spot on and service was quick and friendly. If we're ever back in Tarberr we'll certainly go again.

“Fresh Fresh Fresh Food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2011

I'm so glad that my brother and I stumbled upon this gem in the middle of quaint Tarbert as we were passing through for just one night. At first, we thought it was a small coffee shack, since it was low tide and all we saw was the boat's wheelhouse--the rest of the vessel was below street level. When the owner saw us trying to figure out what the boat was all about, he said "come on in, we're open!", and so we did. We were surprised to find the interior impeccably clean, bright, and inviting--and the same adjectives can be used to describe the food. The menu seemed almost custom-made to my taste, featuring an array of fresh, local dishes, prepared skillfully, yet simply, allowing the ingredients to shine. The oysters were delicious, their taste echoing the (very) nearby waters that they were taken from, clearly in the very recent past. Another highlight was the raw scallop, fresh as can be, served with roe still attached, and a perfectly complimentary garnish of diced tomato and passion fruit. Delicious. Lastly, the story behind this place is fantastic. It turns out that the owners found the boat (flat bottomed to deal with the lowering tides) in the Netherlands and brought it to Tarbert. Great idea! All in all, a great value, with clean, ultra-fresh food, in a relaxed, bright, and spotless setting. Enjoy!

“2nd time visited and not disappointed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2011

We stumbled across this place last October during a motorcycle ride to Kintyre - we liked the idea of eating on a barge so tried it. We were not disappointed.
On another bike ride yesterday my friend and I popped in - we resisted eating somewhere else in the hope it was still open. Fortunately it was and we were not disappointed.
Amazing vegetable and shellfish chowder, brilliant scallops and crab meat later and we were very happy.
I often find I am disappointed with seafood but not here - definitely the best place I've tried in the area.
Great service, great food and friendly staff make this a must stop when in the area. I rarely rave about places but this place is an exception. Planning our next trip down.
