“Outstanding restaurant”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

We spent two nights here, using the hotel as a stepping stone to catching the Colonsay ferry. Our room was bright and airy and had a view of the loch. Our daughter had a proper bed, as opposed to a fold-up bed, in our room. Our bed was a little lumpy and the bathroom could do with some attention and upgrading. I could not get the shower attachment over the bath to work properly so that both the cold and hot water came out together. There is also some noise from the road outside between the hotel and the loch. The room's faults were, however, forgotten during our dining experience in the hotel restaurant.
The West Loch clearly has an outstanding chef(s) and our two meals here were faultless. The cuisine was unusual, expertly presented, fresh and delicious. Our scallops were perfect, served with a delectable, miniature salad and pea and beetroot(?) puree. The monkfish was fresh and succulent and we shared an amazing and unusual chilled chocolate dessert with butterscotch mascapone. Coffee was served in the hotel bar which is cosy and relaxing.
The hotel owners could not have been more friendly or helpful, offering to dry out our wet clothes and to accommodate our bikes in a locked shed.

This was our second visit - enroute to Islay once more. The hotel offers all you need for a 18 hour stop over - and a stay of a few days would be very comfortable. The West Loch welcomes dogs - and those we met on our two visits were certainly role models for some kids! Dinner was rather overshadowed by a party of 8 in the dining room, one of whom obviously thought we were fascinated by her noisy conversation...... the hotel does have facilities for private functions.... though I recognise theis is a difficult issue for hoteliers!
We wish the West Loch success with their planned developments and would happily return when next we visit Islay.

Room Tip: Front of house has a fabulous view of the Loch.

We stopped for a simple lunch. We received a really nice reception. The smoked salmon and prawn sandwich is memorable ! Beautifully presented and generous, together with great taste.
The hotel is a gem, nicely appointed and very comfortable.

Don't drive past, you will miss a treat.

I stayed here with my husband and toddler as a one night stop between ferries.

Staff were massively helpful, and really made our son very welcome at dinner. The owner was particularly kind when he had a tumble and hurt himself at breakfast.

The food was very good and my husband, who is normally a devoted carnivore, really enjoyed the turnip and crowdie cannelloni.

The only thing I can really complain about is not staying here longer - I couldn't recommend it more highly.

We booked lunch about an hour ahead, while on a cycling trip with 15 of us. Nothing was too much trouble. They set us up in our own room. Food was exceptional - local produce, freshly baked bread on the premises. Great service. Can't recommend this highly enough. Owners happy to chat with us. Very friendly staff

Went for food to the West Loch hotel this afternoon with a party of 5 and our wee dog. As soon as we were in the hotel we were treated as if we were staying. The staff were so helpful to ourselves and our wee dog. The food on offer was varied enough (for the meat eaters anyway), but there was only one main vegetarian dish on offer which was the tried and tested macaroni cheese with chips. We ordered the food an waited for it to arrive. During the wait, one of the members of staff brought out a 'doggy chew stick' on a plate for our wee dug, but because our wee dug is gluten intolerant she couldn't eat it. We thought this gesture was priceless and such a lovely touch. The food did take a while to arrive but it did not bother us as wee were sitting enjoying the chat. When the food arrived it looked totally amazing and so well presented. The macaroni cheese, chips with micro salad was the nicest I've ever tasted and the tomatoes were so so tasty (none of your crappy mega market rubbish here). Everyone in our group said the food was fantastic.

The manager (we think it was) gave a great run down of all the drinks and beers they had and was so helpful and knowledgeable.

This is a brilliant, brilliant place. The food was amazing and the price was not to bad at all. The staff were fantastic, so helpful and had a good laugh with them. Great place, great food, great staff, great inside. Thanks very much for your immaculate hospitality and I reckon we will be along later tonight for the dessert. :-)

We visited at the beginning of May. Having just missed the Kennacraig to Islay ferry we continued driving up the A83 for a couple of miles and found this lovely hotel for a spot of lunch. Our friendly, helpful and interesting hostess gave us a very warm welcome, and lunch was great. This was a quiet time of year so we more or less had the place to ourselves, and thoroughly enjoyed our brief stop.

Don't be put off by the exterior. We visited on a sunny day but I can imagine, if it's raining, the hotel looks a bit bleak. What's important is what goes on inside, and we'd certainly go back if we ever miss the ferry again! I've given 4 rather than 5 stars because I cannot comment on the rooms as we didn't stay.
