“LARGE portions.”
Reviewed 24 February 2014 via mobile

We had read good things about Spooners at the place we were staying so decided to pay it a visit. First bonus was the fact it was only about 600 yards from us, then when we entered it looked clean & staff friendly, although as no one was sat in the dining area we thought we'd missed out, but were told no and what did we want. We opted for Hamburger and chips, never have seen such a huge burger, it was a proper homemade burger with cheese, bacon, hash brown and onion rings AND the chips. Even my big jock husband couldn't eat it all, but it was fabulous. We went back with friends for breakfast and also to the bar side one night, which is full of railway memorabilia.

“Christmas menu”
Reviewed 26 December 2013 via mobile

When we went on the Santa Special train on Saturday 21st December, there was a leaflet with our tickets advertising the Christmas menu at Spooners. We rang that afternoon and booked a table. As the price was very reasonable, we weren't expecting a banquet. Well the staff surpassed themselves! Even though we were the only two diners choosing the Christmas meal, the table was very festive with a Christmas table cloth, Christmas napkins, crackers and box containing streamers, party popper and whistle. The food was excellent with good sized starter portions, our roast beef included both roast and boiled potatoes as well as lots of freshly cooked vegetables. We were very impressed with the quality and at such good value.

“Very good beer but...”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

Called in here when travelling on the 2 railways on separate days. The bar is deservedly in the Good Beer Guide and the service here was OK. But the staff in the cafe side leave a lot to be desired - I thought it was a one off until I read other reviews. These are the paid staff - not the volunteers who are very good

Coming off the last train from Caernarfon we bought some sandwiches for the evening, and as soon as we had paid the girl went over and literally slammed shut the sandwich cupboard. Went out via shop to hear another staff member saying 'lets get these doors locked before anyone else comes in'.

I work in the tourist industry and volunteer on another preserved railway and we would never accept such poor attitude.

This place should be the flagship for the railway, but unfortunately is let down by poorly trained & miserable staff, for whom it appears too much trouble to even smile. (I know one couple walked out, the the staff were too busy to serve but chatted amongst themselves) The buffet staff on the train are completely different - pleasant & helpful, as are the staff in the booking office. The beer is good when supplied by Purple Moose, and the food is basic. This could be an excellent venue for locals & visitors alike - please improve!
