“Good place to stay”
Reviewed 15 May 2011

I stayed here whilst my brother played chess in the local tournament over the weekend, hotel staff especially the young girl on reception where excellent, always a smile unlike a lot of places I've stayed costing much more. 1st floor room with sea view was clean and warm, decent size bathroom with a good shower and fresh white towels. We didn't eat in the hotel as we had to be flexible with the schedule but the dinning room was busy with a couple of coach parties and the food seemed to be going down well with the pensioners. Overall I rate as good value for money.

Room Tip: Well worth asking for a seaview

An out dated but clean, comfortable hotel with pleasant staff and reasonably good food. Dining room very cramped. Bedroom on the front of the hotel was large with a sea view. Only one window opened if propped up with a piece of wood, all of the others were stuck closed because they had been painted in the closed position. BBCTV/Radio didn't work, occasionally an ITV film appeared but no news programmes at all during our stay. Tea/coffee making facilities excellent, sheets and towels clean and pure white. Room curtains too thin they did not shut out the lights on the prom which are very many and seem to remain on all night. If you can sleep in a light filled, hot room with very little ventilation you will like this room.

Room Tip: Ask for 3rd floor, sea view and windows which open

This is an old hotel and although refurbished it is very old fashioned. It seems 60 years out of date. The staff were friendly but the food was below reasonable expectations.I stayed as part of a Newmarket package to North Wales and I really think they can do better,

As a single traveller, I was given a small room on the top floor actic-even the lift does not go there.Mild was on draft and there was love entertainment of the sort you might get in a Blackpool guesthouse.

It needs demolishing and rebuildinf.Rhyl is hopeless. There is nothing there at all.

Visited this hotel with a few friends due to having a Conference in the nearby town. This hotel was recommended to me by a work colleague and he was right.
Yes, as most other reviews have said its not 5 star luxury with luxurious rooms, massive beds, huge bars, marbled staircases, etc, etc. For that you need to pay for it and book into the not so local Hilton or Ritz.

The location of this Hotel is right on the main road past the seafront, and is also a hop, skip and jump away from the main High Street and the Railway Station. Next door is a bingo hall.

The hotel staff that greeted us were very friendly and pleasant. As we were pretty early, I was expecting to be told to come back a couple of hours later. To my surprise one of our rooms was ready and they apologised that the other was not ready. (However it was my fault for turning up wildly early anyway!).

Upon entering the room that was ready, I thought wow this is a big room. There was a great sea view, a remote control flatscreen television with freeview, tea/coffee making facilities and clean towels with one of those miniature soaps you can only find in hotel rooms.
The Bathroom was clean and yet more towels were found!
Dinner was served in the dining room (surprisingly!!) and the staff were quick, efficient and friendly, despite having to serve a lot of guests. The food was piping hot, healthy and enjoyable and served to you at your reserved table.
The bed was comfortable and clean. The duvet wasn't too thick nor too thin for the time of the year.
The Bathroom had both a bath and a shower, Hot water came out the tap and soap was provided.
Breakfast was a choice of fruit, cereal, cooked English, tea/coffee and fruit juices. It was hot and again served to you at your reserved table.

Through out my short stay at this Hotel, all the staff I came into contact with were very friendly and happy. The local knowledge was great. Don't forget the behind the scenes team (chef/housekeeping/etc) who also do a great job.

I will have to say it again, please do not believe the other reviews. The hotel is great, the staff are great. If you are wanting 5 star luxury as said above, go find a Hilton or Ritz and pay for it.

Room Tip: Great staff. Great cooked food. Value for money.

Dont get me wrong, for the price I paid I didnt expect 4 star luxury, however what we all got fell well short of expectation. First impressions were poor. The moment the coach pulled up in front of the browny beige building a collective gasp from the people on the coach could be heard in unison. The building was in poor condition, rendering cracked and peeling away, canopy displaying the name of 'Westminster' dirty and covered in bird droppings. As we queued to get into the foyer of the hotel, a small reception area greeted us with a large blousy woman booking us in and handing out keys to rooms with fobs the size of a small paperback book. Why so large I asked? She hissed and said it was because I might lose it? Might lose it? how could I, it was large enough. The room overall was small, with a quarter cut away that had been made into an en-suite bathroom. We were lucky on the whole as the shower worked and the water was hot. The bed had a thin cheap mattress with poor quality duvet covers but was also clean.

I thought a novelty touch was the corners of sewer pipes on display in the dining room. If you looked carefully you could see the bend cut into the corner of the coving and disappear through the ceiling - marvellous touch and painted white so it matched the decor! Hotel clearly caters for coach trips such as ourselves were on. However one of the groups were a bunch of noisy irish schoolboys that did not seems to have any teachers with them to keep them in check in the evenings. They were extremely noisy during the first night of our stay. Food overall okay, nothing special but the service was good considering how busy the staff were. We sat at a crammed in small table on our own for which we were grateful even though it was next to a no longer used chimney brest. Drinks were very expensive, too expensive really and entertainment was hit and miss. The female singer on the Saturday desparetely needed to update her repotoire of songs and her act overall was a bit flat trying to useher husband as a stooge. She should give up and go back to working on the checkout at Tesco, nice singer but no personaltiy for entertaining. The guy on the Sunday was better and at least tried to entertain the people that bothered to show up in the lounge area. Couldnt wait overall to leave the hotel which according to the plaque in the reception area is the 'last word in luxury'. They are trying to refurbish the hotel but it is very much done on a budget. Do not go to this if you can find somewhere else to stay. Newmarket holidays - please find somewhere else for your customers to stay!

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs, try a premier inn

Four (old wrinklies!, ) stayed 3nights Nov 5th via "coachholiday.com. A warm welome, lift to 3rd floor, rooms with on-suit very clean with immaculate sheets and towels two chairs/flat screenTV/warm/ excellent lighting.Evening meal was adequate well set out by most friendly and helpfull staff with a choice including vegetarian; breakfast was first class, again with good choices. Entertainment was audience orientated, with all music set at sensible sound levels NOT BLASTING!!! Bar prices right and nice to see a mild on draft! The hotel has a cosy old fashioned friendliness. After reading others comments I was apprehensive but now well pleased with the experience. Ken and Pat (Norwich)
