“Pagua Paradise”
Reviewed 2 February 2012

Lets just say, we planned on staying for two nights and extended it to five. We not only fell in love with Dominica but the proprietors, Rick and Alicia. We wanted a true "local" experience, sipping rum punch, hiking and just simply-taking it easy. We got it all. From hiking to the boiling lake (second largest in the world) to playing Dominos with the locals; we experienced this Caribbean island to its fullest.
As previously mentioned, this is hiking paradise. It has an amazing rain forest, trails to waterfalls and hot springs. The Dominican vibe is super laid back (unlike Barbados). It reminds me of Costa Rica before the US invasion :) We didn't mind coordinating our pick ups for the restaurant and walked back (down hill) a couple of times. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone (cars pass is narrow) but we enjoyed it. The restaurant, I would suggest eating the crunch salad, breakfast burritos, goat tacos and ceviche. Most of the food is organically grown and community sustained... love that!
Our cabana was tastefully decorated with lovely sheets and cozy beds. I also enjoyed, their decision to bring some of the tin exteriors as an architectural motif, which you see throughout the island. Bravo, we will return and can't wait to see the new cabanas and restaurant.

Room Tip: We stayed in 4, has the most privacy.

Let me start by saying Dominica is one, if not THE, most beautiful places in the world! And if you want an AMAZING place to stay with fantastic service and accommodationa... look no further than Pagua Bay House. Rick & Alicia made our stay so comfortable and they took care of our every need. They have a great knowledge of all the fantastic sights on the island and have an amazing staff (thanks Al!) to take you to see those beautiful spots. It is our recommendation to let someone guide you the first time you visit the island so you don't miss a thing (Rick and Alica provided a driver & guide for us each day). The Carib Village, the Emerald Pool, Spinney Falls, a strenuous hike (not for the faint of heart!) to the Boiling Lake, a great day trip to Calibishie to see Red Rocks and Red Rock Haven Beach, Sari Sari Falls... the list is endless and we didn't even reach what are supposed to be the most beautiful falls on the island or what is talked aboout as an amazing snorkeling spot at Champagne Beach. So... this means we have to go back and I can guarantee you that when we do we woudn't think of staying ANYWHERE ELSE but at Pagua Bay House! If you want beautiful accommodations in a setting of unbridled, rugged beauty... if you want amazing food... if you want to be guided to amazing sights and gorgeous views... if you want to feel as comfortable as you do at home... Pagua Bay House & Pagua Bay Bar & Grill (a short 1/2 mile walk away or quick drive up the hill) is the place for you! Thanks Rick, Alica, Al, & Jesse for making our stay one of the best vacations we have ever had the privilege to enjoy! I can't say enough about this amazing place and the great folks running it!

Room Tip: Any of the room at Pagua Bay are great. We stayed in cabana #4 which was a bit more private.

The hosts, originally from Colorado Springs and Michigan, are as gracious as any you will find anywhere. A real gem of a couple.
The bungalows are certainly a mixture. The outsides are badly rusting corragated metal, while the insides are beautiful and modern. Hard to understand, I guess they were trying to develop a rustic atmosphere with the looks of the buildings..
My biggest complaint was that the restaurant is not on the grounds, but almost a mile up the road up a hill (where it has a wonderful view). So, you can't walk to the restaurant when you want. Without a car, you have to make arrangements for a pick-up ahead of time for each meal (no phone in the room to call). When I complained that the internet did not indicate that the restaurant was not on the grounds, they offered to recommend other lodging in the same price range, fully refund my money and transport me to the new sites (not that there is much else up at that end of the island). The restaurant sounds chic, but it is just a very rustic bar. Food was good.
They are in the process of building additional units and a resturant down at the bungalow site. This will be great, but now you have a lot of construction going on around the units that distracts from them.
It is only about 5 minutes from the airport, which is really convenient.
They will arrange private tours for you with employees that work for them (a little on the pricey side I thought).
There basically is not much of any beach, the road below the units has been expanded to the waters edge for most of the bay. The remainder of the bay had a few feet between high water and the rocks at the roadside. It is the Atlantic ocean, so cold and you probably wouldn't want to go in the water anyway.
I was in the furtherest back unit that basically had no view of the ocean.
I think the place is better suited for the younger people who want to stay in something other than a large resort and spend most of their time hiking and enjoying the beautiful hillsides of Dominica.

If this is your cup of tea, I think you will love the place.

Room Tip: There is no swimming pool, but I think they are building one in the remodeling that is going on.

Rick and Alicia Davison created a unique lodging experience on the NE coast of the island. Their "cabanas" are sleek, modern and comfortable. Waves crashing on the nearby beach provide a rhythmic and energetic background to your sleep. A great base for your tour of Northern Dominica. But what makes it truly special are your hosts. They led us to a unique hike to the perfect pool, local fruits, and even called our daughter when we left our phone behind. Thumbs up!

What makes Pagua bay resorts stand out, besides the gorgeous location and luxurious top of the line rooms is the hospitality and friendliness shown by the owners,Rick & Alicia! I've stayed many times and always left, anxious to return!!!!

What an amazing place to stay. Incredible views, the rooms are designed so beautifully (with super comfortable beds), the restaurant is fantastic (and even more awesome views from there)...I could gush on and on. The owners are so gracious and helpful with organizing seeing the island. Rick and Alicia have managed to provide exquisitely simple accommodations, with everything you need to feel like you're connected (Cable, if you need to catch your sunday games, A/C if you need, and wireless access). You feel as if you are in the middle of the jungle but without having to give up any of the things you might want/need to be completely comfortable. Attention to design detail is apparent, while maintaining beautifully simple, island living space. Everyone that worked there was super nice also. Dominica is a surreally stunning place and this is the place to stay if you are going to visit there. Can't wait to go back!

Stayed for three nights at Pagua Bay in November/December and only wished we could have stayed longer. The accommodation itself is fantastic - in outside appearance it is sensitively modeled to give the appearance of a banana shed, but inside the rooms are fantastically cosy and comfortable, and finished to a high-standard. (Owner Alicia claims that you won't find a more comfortable bed on the island and I am pretty certain that she is right!) The grounds are beautifully landscaped and will be even more special once the remainder of the work is finished. The owners, Alicia and Rick, are really welcoming, friendly, enthusiastic about what they are doing and have assembled a lovely team of local staff. Food is available in the Bar and Grill at the top of the hill. Again, this is a great place, stunning views and fantastic food, with a great selection of drinks (Alicia's local fruit juices are fantastic). It's in a great location - near the airport but not near enough for the flights to disturb you, and close to the new Wai'tukubuli Walking Trail. Superb!
