“Amazing stay; can't wait to return!”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

My husband and I booked 3 nights at Pagua Bay at the last minute, just a day before our arrival, based on its excellent Tripadvisor review. Thank you, Tripadvisor, for this absolute gem of a recommendation!

Having read a lot of the reviews here, I must start by agreeing that the owners, Rick and Alicia, were super helpful and lovely. Just after we checked in, they had to leave on a trip and we were left in the very capable hands of the amazing staff at Pagua Bay for the rest of our stay. Not once did we feel like the staff were giving us poor service because the owners were away. Laureen, Gaby, Jenni, Mike--every single person working at Pagua Bay went out of their way to make sure that we had an incredible time. We were so well taken care of!

Our private little honeymoon suite, Cabana 1, was closest to the ocean and we were treated to the soothing sound of the waves all day and night, with very little other noise despite our relative proximity to the the road. The cabana was gorgeous--beautiful hardwood floors, poured concrete sink and countertop spaces, soft towels and robes, and the most comfortable king-sized bed complete with a heavenly feather mattress topper.

Wifi works great in the restaurant and pool area; since Cabana 1 is furthest from the router we couldn't get a signal in our room but that was fine by us. It was a very quick walk up to the bar when we needed to check our email.

Speaking of the bar, the cocktails are delicious! We tried the Centipede Rum Punch (a strong drink!) and the Coconut Peanut Punch (like a peanut butter milkshake--deliciously decadent). In our three days at Pagua we ate 3 meals a day at the restaurant and everything was delicious. Standouts include the fish tacos, homemade bagels, and delicious mahi-mahi.

An hour-long tube-ride down a nearby river is complimentary for guests, and is a fun way to spend an afternoon! The current in Pagua Bay is very strong, so you wouldn't attempt to swim there but there are lots of great swimming spots in the local rivers and Pagua Bay House has a fantastic pool overlooking the bay if you just need a quick dip on a hot day.

The hotel staff arranged to have a rental car brought to the hotel for us on our last day at Pagua, so we could explore the island en route to our next destination. It was the quickest and most painless car rental experience ever!

The hotel is so close to Melville Hall airport that the location is super convenient as your first stop on the way into Dominica or your last stop before you leave.

We couldn't have asked for anything more from our stay at Pagua Bay, and we can't wait to return!

Room Tip: If you like the sound of waves crashing, request cabana 1 or 2 (closest to the ocean).

My wife and I stayed for a few days in the plunge pool suite...Simply perfect. Rick and Alicia made us feel at home while taking care of other island arrangements for us. They went above and beyond throughout our stay. The food was exceptional especially the curry goat tacos! The only negative is that we couldn't stay longer. And the bed was crazy comfortable :) We'll be back.

My husband I stayed at Pagua Bay House for a week in December. This is our second visit to Dominica and Pagua Bay House. We were there about 5 years earlier and returned because of our excellent experience. Our second stay was even more fantastic than the first! We loved every minute of it! They have been very busy at PBH adding new cabanas, a restaurant and a pool. It is really awesome and all their hard-work shows. The place is beautifully designed and operated. The owners really have taken great care in putting this place together with every little detail considered. It is so nice to have such a welcoming place to stay on your travels. As well as all the modern amenities you need when you are at a place so far from home. We booked close to our desired travel dates therefore to accommodate us we had to move rooms during our stay. Which actually worked out great because each room offered something different for us to experience. The first room we stayed in was Room 5. It was simply amazing! It has its own huge outdoor living space just behind the main door to the room. This space included its own plunge pool, hammock, sectional sofa, Adirondack chairs and sunning chairs. Then the room itself is simple but elegant with warm touches of Caribbean color and fresh flowers. The room has a desk, a TV (which I would not think you would find but was a welcome way to wind down at the end of a hard day exploring the island), AC (if you desire but the breeze off the bay is plenty to keep the room comfortable) and a stocked mini-fridge. The king bed was so comfy with great feather top and wonderful sheets. The bathroom was huge! It was the largest open air shower I have ever seen. You could open the shutters and look right out to the ocean – very cool! Room 6 was just as spectacular with some different highlights. Behind the main door there was a huge deck with a bird’s eye view of the property and the bay. This room did not have the plunge pool but had a great huge soaker tub, which I loved (with comfy robes to follow). The property itself was just gorgeous but the people that own and run the property were fantastic! They were so helpful in navigating the island and what to do. Some highlights for us were the Emerald Pool, Red Rocks, Batibou Beach. They also set up massages for us and a yoga session. The rest of the staff was also top notch. The servers, the cleaning crew and the security guards… everyone was so friendly and genuinely concerned that we enjoy our stay. The food and drink were simply delicious (see my review on the restaurant). We stayed for a week and ate all but about three or four meals at the resort and everyday it was something new and delicious! Oh and you must try the Centipede punch! Needless to say it was a fantastic experience and we can’t wait to return for a third time!

I can't say enough good things about Pagua Bay House, owners Rick and Alicia, and their incredible staff -- Jenny, Laureen, Jessie, Mikey, Bryan, et al! From the second I stepped out of the taxi -- and ordered my first Centipede rum punch! :-) -- to the last moment I left, with Rick and Alicia personally escorting me to my car, it couldn't have been better. The setting is stunning -- right on the bay, with the sound of waves 24/7 (your own personal white noise machine!), immaculately maintained, and even sweet Sarafina (the dog), sleeping or sitting quietly while waiting for a pat on the head. My cabana (#3) was wonderful -- all the comforts of home (and more), nice amenities, fully stocked mini-bar, guest robes, cable TV (even though who would want to waste time watching TV here???). And the food . . . in a word, YUM! Be sure to try the local crayfish and ginger glazed mahi, and if you're lucky, they'll have the fresh lobster ravioli special. The best part of Pagua Bay is the personal touch Rick, Alicia and their whole staff have perfected. Examples: 1) I mentioned I liked papaya, and they made sure they had it for my fruit plate every morning. 2) I arrived sick and had to spend two days in bed. They made a trip to town to get medicine for me at the pharmacy, and everyone checked on me several times a day, brought me soup, and set up a tea kettle for me. 3) Rick and Alicia spend big amounts of time with every new guest to get them oriented, give them itinerary ideas according to their preferences, call and line up guides, call to make bookings, etc. People all over the island know Rick and Alicia, so you just drop their name, and you get great service! It's a testimonial to their good standing in the community that people know them, respect them, and smile when you mention their name. Don't book anywhere else, and if you have to stay somewhere else, do yourself a favor and swing by the property for lunch. I look forward to a return to Pagua Bay house and the lovely island of Dominica.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean, so you can't make a bad choice!!!

We were glad that we booked to stay here. The view was amazing to say the least. While we were there, the waves were huge and the wind blew like crazy (not the norm for this time of year) which made for some pretty pictures. There is no ocean swimming here due to strong undertows, and there is signage up to say so. However, there is a pool which is more than adequate. The bungalows can be deceiving at first glance but once you are inside, you realize that one should never judge too quickly. The bed linens are of high quality, the bed is very comfy with feather mattress topper. The rooms are huge with a lot of thought put into functionality. Very much like a mix of a North American and Caribbean room, with the best of both.
The food, where do I start??? Yummy. Also a mix of North American/Caribbean. And a pretty extensive alcohol choice. They will tailor things to your likes too. Fresh lobsters just waiting to be picked, desserts.... Had the cheesecake as an appetizer one day. ha.
A great place for unwinding. They have selected drivers to take you on excursions, however if you want to do quite a few, realize that many are on the west side, over an hour away, each way. We were given a ride to Carib Village and hiked a trail back which was a good way to explore the immediate area. Hint: wear appropriate footwear...
Rick and Alicia have great, outgoing staff there right now that contribute to a pleasant stay. 24 hour security gave us peace of mind. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to others.

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean. 5 and 6 are deluxe. 7-9 are in the planning stages...

My spouse are frequent travellers and this is the first review that we have ever done on any travel website. We just returned from 5 nights at Pagua Bay House and we simply had to share our experience which, from beginning to end, was flawless. Alicia and Rick are gracious hosts, supported by a team of professional and good-natured staff. Rooms are simply but elegantly decorated, and kept to the highest standards of cleanliness. Beds are comfortable (perhaps too comfortable!) with quality linens. Each cabana overlooks Pagua Bay on the Atlantic; the views are stunning and if you enyoy falling asleep listening to the ocean waves, you cannot find a better place. There is an excellent restaurant on site with a good selection of Caribbean and North Amercian cuisine. The cocunut shrimp curry and the lamb curry are not to be missed. The thing though that distinguishes this fine hotel with others is that it is a boutique operated by innkeepers who clearly love what they do and the island on which they live - it shows in the pride of their place. Alicia and Rick, we will return!

Stayed at Pagua Bay for our last night in Dominica after 16 months of medical school and it was the perfect way to end our stay. Location was beautiful, place was clean and very modern especially for the island. The staff was amazing and Rick and Alicia were very accommodating, even going to buy things they didn't have to make drinks we had requested. Can't beat service like that. Perfect place for our last day
