“Laid back 'n chilled.....”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

We stayed at Mango Bay Cottages for our first of 3 weeks (lucky us) in Grenada. We arrived stressed and tired, but after a shower, one of Kiddousi's tasty meals, and a good night's sleep in one of the most comfortable beds we've ever had the pleasure of lying down on, we awoke in an idyllic setting to gentle Caribbean birdsong - we'd arrived!

These simple, charming 'cottages' are in a prime spot for hours of gazing at the boats and ships going by, plus spectacular sunsets, and, over breakfast each day we had the added bonus of checking out the iguanas who gather below the restaurant deck to wait for titbits from Kiddousi.

Kiddousi (best pancakes ever!), Jacky (safe repair genius and a lovely lady) and all staff were delightful, and the whole site was spotless.

Lots of steps (only one of us whined) lead down to the little black sand beach, which is very quiet during the week, but is visited by resort and pleasure boats at weekends. Good snorkelling around the rocks at the ends of the beach too.

Niggles? Only one or two, so the following comments are meant as constructive thoughts:
The upright chairs in the rooms were not comfortable to sit on, producing numb nether regions after a short while. A couple of small easy chairs (or more comfortable uprights) would have been welcome. The balcony chairs were a bit better, but not much.
A bit more waterflow to the showers would be nice, we thought, if the local water system allows.
Kiddousi is a talented cook and produces really lovely grub (and we're not even vegetarians, let alone vegan) but the daily menu is repeated rather too often. We visited Eve's Cove restaurant (just up the road) twice, when we fancied some fish, and this nicely balanced out the veggie days.

We know that "work is in progress" in building up the business, and we wish everyone at Mango Bay great success.

PS Re. aforementioned Eve's Cove restaurant - run by two charming ladies - which was not previously on TripAdvisor. We initiated an entry, wrote a review, and then found that TA had moved them to Antigua!! We're hoping that TA will soon take note of our messages and move them back to GRENADA please!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have the best views, though downstairs may be cooler - they do all have aircon though...

A beautiful spot on a lovely island. Great views and comfortable self catering cottages/apartments but take time out to try Kiddusi Smarts vegan home cooking. Hes also very knowledgeable on local horticulture and homeopathic remedies. Beach is a long climb down so dont forget anything. Good snorkeling and really quiet - very safe. If you can you can drag yourself away Gouyave Fish Friday is a short taxi bus away-and worth the trip. They have a local taxi driver who does a good half day tour (cant remember his name) and he will take you for a traditional Oildown for lunch. You wont be disappointed!

We had read about Mango Bay before we went and it lived up to all expectations and beyond. Amazing views, from private well equipped cottages (we stayed upstairs in the turtle cottage), that felt very private. Staff were excellent, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We spent some time on the beach, which is down a lot of steps, and does have shade in the day and some good snorkelling (on the day we went better on the right as you face the sea). We hired snorkels from Mango Bay for reasonable prices. They provide you with a umberella and chairs for the beach if needed. We ate two evening meals at Mango Bay - both superb, and we felt very spoilt as two vegans - amazing chocolate coconut dessert with smoothie and the juice was amongst the best we tasted on the island. Non veggie eaters won't be disappointed - fantastic views too! We were really spoilt by a suprise very thoughtful chocolate cake on our wedding anniversary! I would definitely stay at Mango Bay again - we didn't have our own transport and this wasn't a problem. You can get a taxi or local buses stop close by. If you are looking for somewhere quiet, but beautiful, with wildlife, beach, snorkelling, lazing in hammocks on your own private balcony watching amazing sunsets, with superb food - Mango Bay is the place for me. We also booked a massage - I have qualified in massage therapy and had many massages - this was amongst the best! Staff at Mango Bay can book for you. Mango Bay is very reasonably priced - very!

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the upstairs cottages - although I think all four have a fantastic view I think...

From the breathtaking views, the very private beach, complete with its 170 steps that make you work an appetite, to the simple but very tasty vegetarian cooking by Chef Kiddusi Smart, to the absence of TV and daily paper....... the Wi-Fi is reliable and fast.
this is the perfect vacation for those who live in pressure cookers.
If you feel brave, rent a car (right hand side steering), but I advise to take the local buses.
Power outlets are British style, and even though each cottage provides an adapter, you may consider bringing in one to have extra charging capabilities.

Room Tip: Change money to EC Dollars in St Georges. Republic Bank, on the way, has ATMs

In the first week of February 2014 we stayed three days in the Mango Bay Cottages and we loved it. Everything was perfect. There are only five rooms in the whole place, We stayed on the top floor of one the two story bungalows. The view is absolutely out of this world, just the garden, the green hills and the deep blue see. And I have rarely seen a place so perfectly constructed. Everything looks so perfect, the colors match beautifully, even the towels or the cups and plates in the kitchen. Very well done! And we really enjoyed the vegan dinner on the terrasse. There is no pool, but a protected small beach 181 steps below our room. The stairs are in good shape now.
We would love to come back to this place!!!
Thanks again for your hospitality, Peter and Christian

Room Tip: All five rooms are perfect.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Mango Bay at the end of December. I will keep this short and sweet...

Pros:
Excellent vegetarian food (my husband is still talking about their breakfasts!)
Views (simply stunning)
Grounds (so lush, green, and covered in fruit trees)
Hosts and staff (the nicest folks we met during our two week stay on the island)
Private Beach (enough said!)
Amenities (kayaks, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, hammock)
Value (totally worth it!)

Cons:
Location (we spent a significant amount of time in the car, but we enjoyed the harrowing driving)
Beach Access (those stairs!)
Bugs (that's the island for ya!)

All in all, we would stay here again if we returned to Grenada and would recommend it to anyone!

Mango Bay is wonderful, but won't be right for everyone - it's best for those who aren't seeking a typical large resort experience. The price-value is great. The four little cottages (two up, two down) are set in a lovely, lush garden on a hillside overlooking the ocean. The rooms are charming, simple and spotless. There is AC, but we never used it, keeping the doors open to catch the breezes. It can get a bit warm in late afternoon as the sun sets, but it's the tropics, right? Each apartment has a balcony with hammock and wonderful views. At night we slept to the sound of the waves, crickets and tree frogs - the property is very removed and quiet. We woke up to rainbows almost every morning (it was supposed to be the dry season, but we got a lot of rain especially at night and early morning).

The very good on-site restaurant is vegan, with an emphasis on local cuisine and produce. It requires advance notice so the food can be bought and prepared, with one three-course meal offered each night, and one option for breakfast. The individual tables on the covered deck offer great views. The kind cook was also our main source of contact while there, getting us snorkeling equipment, giving us info, etc. He also prepared us a last minute meal when we arrived off the plane hungry at 10 pm (bless him!)

We also visited other restaurants for variety (and seafood). The nearby Eve's Cove also requires advance notice for a meal - no menu, we just discussed the options (local cuisine) with the cook. We were always the only ones there, which was a bit strange, but the food was good. We fixed our own breakfast in the cottage's little kitchen, using local fresh fruit (mangos! bananas! oranges!) that we bought at little outdoor food stands near the bus station in St. Georges. Funny, but the grocery stores have awful produce, better to buy from the folks who are growing it.

There are a LOT of STEEP steps (170 of them) from the cottages to the small, secluded black sand beach below. The staircase is in good shape, but the down-up climb meant we stayed at the beach for a while each trip, not darting back and forth from our room. The water was crystal cool and clear. The room has two portable beach chairs, beach towels and a big folding beach umbrella for our use - nice touch.

Mango Bay is well situated to explore the wonderful island of Grenada, but "quiet and removed" also means it takes a bit of effort to get there and get away. We rented a car for a few days, and enjoyed exploring - but driving is tough (left hand-side driving, narrow-winding roads, few signs, fast drivers, pedestrians walking on the road, and confusing one-way streets in St. Georges). There are 15-passenger vans that serve as public buses that go all over the island: you can catch one at the top of the drive and we enjoyed taking them as well (packed, reggae music, but fun). Best to get a bus not when people are going-coming to work since they will be full and pass you by. Buses run until about 8 pm.

Mango Bay did arrange a airport pickup (very good idea, cheaper and the driver knows where to go) and also the car rental. They delivered the small SUV to us at the cottage, and handled all the paperwork right there, including $30 Grenada govt charge for local license.

If you don't have the fortitude to drive, it might be best to use the buses for nearby trips (St. Georges, Grand Anse beach, Fish Friday in Gouvue are each about 30 minutes away) and take an all-day private car tour for more distant sights (don't miss Belmont Estate for lunch, garden and cocoa tours; nutmeg plant; rum distillery; rain forest; waterfalls).

If you've never been to Grenada, I can't say enough wonderful things about it. Kind people, safe, lush, lovely, lots to do and explore. We can't wait to return!
