I needed to stay in Tepoztlan for about a week, which is very unusual for this small town that caters to weekend visitors. I wanted to stay at a guest-house-type place and to save some money. Both Lonely Planet and a colleague recommended Posada Ali. I booked a suite with a king-sized bed, a couch, and a view of the mountain. My colleague helped me book the place and I also called several times to confirm. Like many places in Mexico, Posada Ali does not accept credit cards. In fact, it only accepts cash. It also prefers a deposit of sorts to secure a room. Clearly, this was a bit challenging, if not impossible. My colleague offered to make the deposit on my behalf, but when I called from the US, the deposit was quite unnecessary. In fact, they offered a lower rate, which was quite nice. When we arrived, no one was waiting for us, despite the fact that we had called ahead to say that we would be arriving quite late. Granted, it was a holiday, but I had to call their telephone line to get anyone to open the door. As for our "suite," well, we did see a room with a king-sized bed, but it was not our room. I don't think that any of the rooms with view of the mountain have king-sized beds, but that's neither here nor there. For the price, it's a bit disappointing. The facilities are fine and there's plenty of hot water and really beautiful views, but for a bit more $$, I think you can do better - not much better, but better. That said, my priorities might be different. I would've spent the extra money for friendlier service and Internet that the next door Nican Mo Calli Posada provides. There's also a nice pool and some courts. Also, when we were leaving on Thursday, you could notice a change in terms of attention to detail and customer service. You do pay for this though as we got quite a discount for staying during the week.
