“Amazing Hike!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

The hike to the top of Tepozteco was somewhat challenging but well worth it! We started our climb fairly early- by 7am we were on our way up the mountain- and we were rewarded by reasonable empty trails and a pretty clear view from the top. The pyramid itself is quite small but the experience of the climb made it one our favourite mornings in this part of Mexico.

“A quaint town with rich history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

Tepozteco is a very small town that has many progressive qualities. There are the usual town square with vendors and open market especially good on a saturday afternoon. There are visible pyramids atop the huge mountain which is climbable for those that have stamina.. not for the faint of heart. The town square features a stunning 15th century cathedral and courtyard. The entrance is decorated by a mosaic of seeds and is replaced seasonally by the townspeople. This is a quiet, friendly 'Magical' city. Extremely safe.

“Great, exhausting outing with the family”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2014

My husband is from Mexico City, and we made an outing with the whole extended family to Tepozteco Pyramid in December, 2013. I think it's called the "Santuario" locally. The town of Tepoztlan is artsy and very quaint. We arrived in mid-afternoon on a Saturday, and it was very crowded. We had a fabulous lunch outside with a great view of the surrounding mountains before heading up to the Pyramid. It was a very long, strenuous hike. Our group arrived at the top in stages. My nieces, ages 9 and 14 did fine. Watch your step--the terrain is very uneven, and some rocks aren't too stable. It was a beautiful climb through the shaded woods, however. If we'd had more time, we could have taken it more slowly, but we had to hurry to the top before they closed. Check the closing time on the day you go--we arrived just in time, but some people behind us were turned away at the top (quite a shame!) The pyramid is not the most impressive, but there are some neat relief carvings inside it. We had a blast. Afterward, treat yourself to ice cream at the famous "Tepoznieves". They have over 100 flavors, including rose petal!

“Amazing scenary”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2014

If you make it to the top it's definitely worth it. I've hiked before, but I've never climbed at that altitude. It makes it a lot more difficult with less oxygen. I underestimated the difficulty of the hike, although I don't think it was that difficult. Wear proper shoes (although I hiked it in my Chacos) and bring water, because it is extremely hot. When you get to the top, the 'pyramid' is somewhat disappointing, although the views make up for it. To get the pyramid is 43 pesos or free with a student ID. They will not ask you for a student ID so make sure you show it to them so you don't have to pay. There are also animals at the top, members of the badger family, called coati, also known as a tejón. Do not set your bag down or they will try to enter it. Also do not bring food out or they will surround you. This should go without saying, but do not try to pet them. Although they are kind of cute, they are wild animals. At a fast pace, with a fee stops, it takes roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour. Use the bathroom before you head up the mountain, as there are known at the top. However, you can purchase bottled water at the top for 15 pesos before you head bak down.
