“Perfect Laid Back Resort”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

I have read most of the previous reviews prior to our trip, so I will try note to be too long winded. This is the perfect resort for this location. The rooms are large and clean. The staff bends over backwards to make your stay perfect. The Food Service was very good. The sunsets were amazing. Bicycles, Paddle Boards, Kayaks, and a great beach. The only negative I have read about was a positive to me. Las nubes is the farthest away from town which made it the least crowded and quietest resort in Holbox. The Whale Shark Snorkleing was unbelievable. We chartered a flight from Cancun which I felt was well worth the money. A 30 minute scenic flight -vs- a 3 hour van ride. Can't wait to go back.

Amazing. Location, location, location. Literally next to the sea (about 1 feet). Very nice hotel. Hippie Chic with great food and service. Yes, its true that service is kind of slow, but they are very kind so that compensates it (my point of view). Rooms are nice. Ask for the ones in front of the beach, they should have breathtaking views.
Sunsets are amazing, calm beaches and tiny but nice pools. I would definetely Come here next year, mosquitos off season (march- april). Bring tons of repelant because mosquitoes are millions and they are tough.

Ok, I must confess to having read pretty much every Trip Advisor review for this hotel, as well as most of the other Isla Holbox hotels, before booking (via Expedia) our stay at Las Nubes. We spent the last week of June at this property, and I think we made the right decision. But that doesn't mean its the best place on the island. It worked for us, but it wasn't somewhere I would rush to return to and it won't appeal to everyone. We chose Isla Holbox for the Whale Shark experience, and wanted to see a part of Mexico that hasn't been destroyed by over-development. Yet.

The location of this hotel is what made it the right choice for us. I love that it's NOT close to any other hotel, and is literally at the waters edge. The main road connecting the hotel to town runs BEHIND the hotel, not in front. So this means that when you're in your room, or sitting at the restaurant or bar, or in your beach chair, you don't see, hear, or smell those noisy/smelly golf carts. You can feel the breeze from the water, you can hear the water lapping on to the beach, and you can see the water from almost anywhere on the property. You feel "isolated', in a good way, at Las Nubes. Not just another property along the "strip". And in the hot summer sun, that breeze off the water is essential. At the edge of the hotel is totally undeveloped beach, making long walks (both on the beach and/or in the water, since its so shallow) easy and you might be the only people around.

However, the isolated location also means that if you want to walk to town, its about a 20 minute walk for shopping, errands, and dining if you choose to not eat at the hotel. If you do this walk while the sun is out, it's pretty darn hot. If you do it around sun set, it's cooler and beautiful, but cover up with bug spray. Yes, you can bike in to town or take a golf cart taxi, but we opted to walk. Bring a flashlight if you plan to walk back after it gets dark.

The property is in good condition, and appears to have been well maintained. There is a lot of staff, and we found the service to be excellent. For a few of the nights, it felt like there were more staff than guests. The majority of the staff didn't speak English, including most of the wait staff, but our ipads and google translate came in handy on occasion. We saw very few other Americans at the hotel, and on the island in general, so the lack of english speakers appeared to be the norm on the island. Not a big problem for us, but it might be for some travelers. The front desk person always spoke English, so any issues were dealt with easily. I felt that the paddle boards, kayaks, and bikes were intended to be "self serve", so I didn't have an issue with doing just that. It all seemed pretty easy and self explanatory.

Yes, there are iguanas and raccoons. I found that both added to the unique charm of this island and of this small hotel. They weren't a nuisance, and I never felt that they were a problem. But if animals like this wandering around the grounds freak you out, then you may not like the "rough edges" of Isla Holbox, where there is an abundance of stray dogs, no paved roads, restaurants with no air conditioning, and only a single ATM which may or may not actually be operational when you need it.

We had booked a bungalow with water view, but upon arrival, we were given Room 27, a junior suite. Once we saw the bungalows, we were quite glad that we were NOT in one. Our room was at the end of the property, a corner unit on the ground floor with views directly on to the water from two sides. It was a spacious room, fantastic views, our own hammock and lounge chairs on our front patio (which appeared shortly after we requested them) and unlike the waterfront bungalows, there is not a steady stream of people walking in front of our room since we were on the end. The A/C worked very well, and the room also had black out curtains which made sleeping in quite easy. Spacious bathroom too.

However, if I had to rate the room based on charm, character, or romantic aspirations, I'd have to give it a pretty low score. It felt rather cold and sterile, both in terms of furnishings and especially the lighting. It had two double (not queen) beds, which for most couples would make for some pretty uncomfortable sleeping. Each bed had a side table and reading light only on a single side. I found a little table between our beach chairs that I brought in to use as my side table. The flooring in the room is a soft concrete type floor, cream colored to match everything else in the room. But there was no area rug, runner, or any type of soft floor covering in the room, so any sandy or wet feet inside the room just stayed sandy. No mosquito netting, no fancy towel/floral decorations on the bed, no soft lighting, nothing colorful or atmospheric to create a sense of character or romance. So if this a much needed couples vacation, you might be disappointed. Great location and view made the room pleasant, but otherwise, the room was probably the least attractive I've seen in a long time. And from what I could see when walking by (and looking directly in to, since you have no choice but to walk right in front of them) the bungalows at the waterfront, these too also appeared to share some of the shortcomings of our room. And a mini-fridge would have been a nice addition, as it would have been good to keep some cold drinks on hand, and maybe some snacks. A fresh ice bucket is brought to the room nightly, along with bottles of water, so a cold glass of water before bed time is at least an option. The bathroom was big, with a lovely bowl for the sink, and had a decent shower with ample hot water. But the A/C from the room isn't vented in to the bathroom, and there was no ceiling fan (in either the bathroom or main room). So the bathroom pretty much was hot and stifling. You wouldn't want to spend too much time in there.

The continental breakfasts were fine. I'm not entirely sure the pastries are made on site, but they were pretty good. We usually saved most of them to eat at lunchtime, as the fruit platter was enough for us. I did order scrambled eggs twice, and they were very good. The dinner menu was a bit heavy and rich for us, given the heat and weight reminders provided daily by our bathing suits. So we ate dinner in the restaurant area only once. We found that eating upstairs off the snack menu suited us fine, with a nice breeze and more casual vibe and menu. The burger was decent, as were the chicken wings and guacamole. We ate dinner in town most of the nights, though. I can recommend Viva Zapata, Mandarina (at las tortugas) and the taco truck (tacos quetos).

On our daily walks into town along the beach, we could see the beach experience offered by other hotels. Many had nicer, more interesting, more comfortable beach lounge options than Las Nubes. Padded/swinging beach beds, with protective/stylish fabric canopies, colorful cushions and pillows, hammocks suspended over the water, etc.....Most of the beach chairs at Las Nubes looked like they were straight from a big box store, with no pillows or padding and pretty unattractive and not very comfortable. There are a few great beach beds on the property, including a pair of them at the waters edge. But the one we used most was the one tucked away in an alcove behind the upstairs bar. Always in the shade, and a nice breeze, to keep it cool and free of bugs. And perfect wifi, which was appreciated since it rarely worked in our room. Keep in mind that our visit was at the end of June, and it was really hot, humid, and yes, there were mosquitos and other bitey/fly-like inspects. A summer visit for us was dictated by the presence of the Whale Sharks ONLY at this time of year....

There is a new general manager at the hotel, who has been there a month. We spoke with him briefly, and he seemed very nice and interested in ensuring we had a good experience at this property. It is likely that he will initiate some changes that will enable Las Nubes to more easily justify its higher price tag, as i'm not sure the location itself is enough to make it the most expensive property on the island. But for us, the location of the property AND of our room was worth it.

Room Tip: Room 27 had probably the best location/view, but we did occasionally hear the footsteps and water ru...

We just got back from from our one week visit to this wonderful little hotel located on the surprisingly charming and relatively undiscovered destination of Isla Holbox, an island reached by ferry off the northernmost tip of the Yucatan peninsula. Our visit during the month of June was timed to take advantage of the opportunity to swim with the whale sharks which aggregate off the coast at this time of year. We were greeted by hotel staff upon arrival with moist hand towels to cool our faces and delicious tamarindo margaritas to cool our thirst as we signed in.

Comprised of only 29 rooms located directly on the beach, which is unique to the island, Las Nubes has all the charm and ambience you could expect of a boutique hotel, while also having quality service and an on-site restaurant and bar. The A/C in the room was exceptional, which is a good thing since during our visit the temperature was in the 90's. We also loved this hotel being situated at the quiet end of the beach away from the main hotel zone. You can walk along the offshore sandbar all the way to Punta Mosquito to see the migrating flamingos, even at high tide. At night, you can see the lanterns off in the distance of the local fisherman out at sea, and each morning you might also see fishermen using butterfly nets on the beaches to catch smaller fish as you catch your breakfast at the restaurant.

During your stay at La Nubes, you are also welcomed each day by the many iguanas which populate the property, and by night you could be visited by one or more of the local raccoons looking for a hand-out. Las Nubes is the perfect antidote for anyone seeking to avoid the crowds and bustle of Cancun, while at the same time enjoying an unspoiled taste of old Mexico which still exists on the island.

Simply perfect.
We had our wedding in this paradise last week (April) and it was the most amazing 4 days with our friends and family. I surely suggest having your wedding here and taking over the entire hotel so you can have all your friends close to you and organize activities during the day and parties at night. The day of the wedding was everything we expected, even the sunset was absolutely perfect! Everyone treated us like kings and our friends were very comfortable having a great time.
One of my favorite things about doing our wedding here was the high level of taste the staff has. It was always easy for me to arrange and finalize details all the way from NYC months prior to the event because i always trusted their taste, and I was right. They understood perfectly what we wanted and it all looked just like we pictured it.

As a vacation also incredible...
It is the perfect getaway if you want to be away from crowds and loudness. The food is amazing, the service is THE BEST, everyone is friendly and attentive. It's a relaxing place, dont come here if you look for crazy partying unless you bring your 70 friends along with you and organize your own parties ;)

When coming to the island i suggest to charter a plane if there is 5 of you so it only takes 25' from/to Cancun airport, it is a very convenient. If you have time though, a more economical way is just to arrange the car service with the hotel.

I love this place and would definitely go back.

My wife and I went here at the end of Feb. The room was VERY clean and comfortable (we had a Junior Penthouse) - great view!! The bed was amazing - I haven't slept that well in a long time. I was a little disappointed the room did not have internet even though there was a wireless router in the room...maybe it was better that way so we can could really 'unplug"... internet around the property was spotty at best.

The staff was incredibly attentive. We mostly experienced the wait staff and the bartenders - very, very nice people and always with a smile. I really liked Janero up at the bar - good kid!! They also brought us a sweet treat and dropped it off in our room each night - it was a nice touch.

Although went into town for a variety of food, the 2 dinners we had there were very good. The lunches were great!! We had fish tacos - unreal. The cont. breakfast was OK, but I opted for eggs with the peas and sauce, (I can't remember the name but it was very good). However, by the end of the trip I had asked them to make me a breakfast quesadilla - bacon eggs and cheese with salsa on the side - just ask for "Egg's Estaban". Overall a great trip.

As for transportation we used Holbox VIP - very good curb to curb service. Pepe was super nice and so was Roberto! Do not be scared when they turn off the main roads- they are either taking you to show you a tourist attraction or taking a short cut... It was a little nerve racking at first because of all of the stories. It's a bout a 2.5 hour drive.

Overall - a great trip.... Also - I think we were the only people from the US there, it was kind of nice:)

It's definitely a unique experience and a very nice hotel.

Room Tip: We had #25 and it was very nice. Great ocean view - at the end.

If you are looking for a spot that is the epitome of tranquility, that offers a high service quality experience and a spectacular scenery, Las Nubes is definitely worth a visit!

The beach is amazing with its shallow waters that allow for a unique "ecosystem", where you can walk in the ocean with water up to your ancles or knees surrounded by small turbots and other fish, if they are not victims of the pelicans.

Perfect place to go if you need to unwind and get away from the busy life in the city.
