“Best hotel on the island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2013

Exceptionally friendly staff (unlike most people I met on the island), rooms are clean and spacious and well equipped, pool wad also clear and clean, as were all the areas of the hotel. Really beautiful and simple, not overstated.
Breakfasts are delicious too.
Cannot rate this place highly enough and having walked around most of the other nearby hotels, I am sure I made the right choice.

Casa Palapas is situated at the far end of Holbox down a sandy lane, far enough to make it peaceful and secluded but not so far to make the town inaccessible. The hotel is made up of 4 two-storey cottages, making it maximum occupancy of 16 people. The size of hotel and location make it perfect for those wanting a bit of peace and quiet. It is like having a private beach and ocean.

The hotel itself is very relaxed, the first time I have encountered an honesty bar since the ski chalets of the 1990s. You help yourself to a drink, notch it up on your (paper) slate and you pay at the end when you leave. A bit of notice is required to order your meals (lunch, dinner) if eating in, just to allow the kitchen to buy the food in fresh and prepare it. We ate in twice and the fresh barbequed fish we had was just devine. As a bit of a foodie, it was wonderful to watch the food being prepared and discuss it in what (very) little spanish I speak. The portions served we just as we wanted, too - we're not great eaters but don't want to waste food either so not having heaps left on your plate was great. The communal table allows you to mix with other guests but it may not be to everyone's linking.

The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel, next to the swimming pool. My first thoughts as we were shown to our room was "this is going to be noisy late in the evning and early in the morning". I could not have been more wrong, despite the hotel being fully occupied for the whole time we stayed there. The pool, by the way, is not huge but is good enough to keep you cool in the heat of the day and sit around the sides whilst you sip your drink.

Martin, front of house, is extremely helpful sorting out excursions and travel arrangements. He does really want you to enjoy your stay. Not that he needs to try that hard, it is an exceptional base for relaxation and discovering nature.

One last thing. Matin will of course warn you about the mosquitoes when you first arrive. Having read the dire warnings before in the travel guides, which made me a little uneasy before our arrival, I feel I should say something about them. During my stay in Mexico, I experienced many mozzies, most of whom I am on first name terms with and some so intimately, they should be sending out wedding invitations. Yes they are around in Holbox and yes, you do need to put on anti-insect protection and if you do, you'll be fine. However, if you forget to protect yourself and you are bitten by the local mozzies, trust me they are not nearly as virulent as those you'll meet for example on the Playa del Carmen or around Chichen Itza. And one bit of anthisan sorts them out (other creams are available), unlike the others where the bite marks are just beginning to fade.

We stayed at this hotel 2 nights, 2 adults and a 3 year old. I absolutely love the concept. The kitcen is semi open, so you Can just grab your own sodas evt, and write it on a list. Everybody eats at the same long dinnertable, so you Can talk to somebody if you feel like it. We got to chat with some very nice people. Just announce when you would like to eat and what, and go relax while it is prepared. Our son loved the place, and everybody was so nice to us. The atmosphere is relaxed and calm, the pool is very clean and lovely, the area with sunbeds is well kept, the rooms are really cosy and authentic and the beach is one of the most beautiful i have ever seen (Australia, barbados, thailand ect) This hotel really reflects what Holbox is about- dont miss it.........

This is a wonderful small hotel. Extraordinary service, beautiful and immaculate villas right in the beach. Nice pool, great beach chairs. Also wonderful food. About a 15 minute walk to town. So quiet except for the chirping of the geckos.

What a wonderful, peaceful, dreamy escape it is to stay at Palapas del Sol. They set up airport transfer and taxi for us. Samuel and Estel were a hoot. The wonderful food and personalized service were above my expectations. We saw many flamingos and golden rays. The property was very well kept and clean. The entire staff made our stay one we will always remember. We hope to return to this quaint island. My husband says he felt like Ernest Hemingway! JUST BOOK IT!

I have travelled to most of the Caribbean islands including remote locations that most tourists have never heard of. Holbox is a spectacular destination and has become one of my favorites. My experience at Palapas del Sol was a dream come true. The amenities were basic but quaint and authentic with beautiful canopy beds and flowing white linens. The rooms themselves are roofed with thatched palm leaves which adds to the tropical esthetic. The food on premises at Palapas del Sol is fresh, delicious and homemade by friendly ladies whose culinary abilities rival those of seasoned, formally trained chefs. I am almost disinclined to let the secret out.... For the adventurous type of traveller.... This is the spot!!!

If you want to escape this is the place! Friendly and laid back, if you can; somewhere to come back to time and time again. Only a 10 minute walk to the main town but far enough to get that real island feeling, watch flamingo's flying by or spot flying fish.
A great little pool, fantastic food, trusting honestly bar, it was a really wonderful experience to stay here!

Room Tip: There was a honeymoon room with a water tower which looked pretty special.
