“Great restaurant with gourmet chef”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

Loved, loved, loved, this restaurant. The best fish and flank steak ever! They don't have a menu and there is usually only 4 specialty items each night. The chef comes out and explains each meal. The service was great and for the food quality it was reasonably priced.

“Fine food and great beer in the rain...”
Reviewed 10 January 2014 via mobile

El Chapulim was a welcoming (dry) oasis on a very wet night on Holbox Island. Greeted at the door we sat down and were presented with the small but interesting menu. The menu changes daily and is not written down but presented to you by the chef himself. The menu is predominantly seafood but there is a meat dish to keep the carnivores happy. We opted for a spicy prawn dish and a fragrant dorado dish. Both were delicious and served with roast potatoes and a sweet & savoury fruit salad. The dishes were a mix of traditional Mexican flavours served in a contemporary way.

In addition to the food El Chapulim boasts an interesting and fairly extensive Mexican craft beer selection (25 different beers I'm told). We opt for a local Yucatan amber ale and a fantastic Mexican IPA. Both make a pleasant change from Modelo, Pacifico, Dos Equis etc.

Great food, interesting beer and very good value.

“Don't miss this restaurant!”
Reviewed 5 January 2014 via mobile

Heard about this place from other guests at our hotelito and think it's the best restaurant on Holbox. Unique and fresh food beautifully prepared and presented. Very charming bistro atmosphere and superior service. Yum!

“Masterful”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

Simply stated, El Chapulim is the best restaurant on Holbox. The food is masterfully prepared by a chef that clearly takes considerable pride in, and brings impressive skill to his cooking. The restaurant's distinction (besides the high quality of its cuisine) is the absence of a set, standardized, and written menu. Instead, each evening has daily features (usually four) in different categories (pescado, camarones, carne, mariscos mixtos, for examples), all detailed by the chef after you're seated. This is a cozy, well-appointed and casual restaurant just off the zócalo, and well worth multiple visits. For the quality of the food, the prices are certainly reasonable. The host/server and the chef work in convivial and efficient tandem, and the experience, from the food, to the service, to the atmosphere (we preferred an outdoor table) is thoroughly enjoyable. An eminently drinkable Baja wine, and you're set.
