We spent two nights in this hotel, the rooms are rustic like the area demand. They clean it every day. No tv and the bed was a little hard, no soft at all.Our balcony was exactly ocean front, the view in the morning is amazing. A lot of birds flying all around make you feel in paradise. Our one year old kid was amazed with the show.
The beach is not the best area for swimming but you can walk and find a better area.
We didn't try the food.
The staff was really nice and helpful.

A luxurious hotel at a most affordable price. Perfect location. Wonderful service. The beach is ten steps away from your room. The main street of soft sand and tasty food is right there. Relaxing and peaceful.

We didn't stay at the Amaite Hotel but we did eat in the restaurant there. It was our last night in Holbox and we wanted a special meal to end our vacation. We walked around looking at the various restaurants and dismissing them and settled on Casa Nostra which happened to be closed that night. So, we started walking up the beach back to town and discovered the beachfront magic (Amaite) restaurant.

This restaurant is housed in what used to be the Faro Viejo hotel. We had been there about 9 years ago and had a pizza and got to know the one-eyed cat who roamed the premises. As we were passing the Amaite restaurant we noticed a cat as well. So, we looked at the menu and a gentleman came out to explain it to us since he wasn't sure we understood Spanish. We had a lovely table in the open air section that fronts the beach. Candles, white tablecloths, soft music, waves drifting in and our last sunset on Holbox. What a picture! And . . . what a great meal. I had the coconut shrimp and my husband tried the pescado picante which was a grilled filet of fish with a surprisingly tasty, mildly picante tomato sauce. We were also served sunflower bread hot from the oven. With 2 glasses of wine each, our total was about 800 pesos. Well worth the price of a movie picture ending to our visit. Oh - and the cat is named Mimi - she's been there for about 5 years or so and her eyes are fine, but her snout is a little off kilter.

My wife and I just returned from our "mystery trip" to Holbox. I did not tell mi preciosa esposa our destination until we were on our way to the airport and, as might be imagined, we were a little anxious about how our adventure would turn out. Holbox and Amaite Hotel & Spa did not disappoint.

As this review concerns Amaite Hotel I will try to keep my comments "on point". Honestly, I can't really add much to what most other TA reviewers have written, but I can and will most certainly confirm the accuracy of the reviews. Eduardo, the hotel's charming and helpful general manager, is an excellent ambassador for Holbox and Amaite Hotel. He was genuinely interested in seeing to our modest needs and I very much appreciated his impromptu Spanish tutoring lessons. Inquires were met with prompt and friendly advice and we could not have been more pleased with the entire hotel staff. Along with Eduardo, there are Manuel, Felix, Diego and Patricia the Artist we must thank for making our stay enjoyable.

The hotel is directly on the beach and all rooms indeed face the sea. The lower level rooms are apparently larger suites but we only got verbal descriptions from other guests. We were in an upper level room (there are only two floors) and our room was perfectly adequate and spotlessly clean. The A/C worked just fine and the cross breeze when opening both doors was generally enough to keep the small space comfortable while freshening up from our mornings on the beach and our afternoon ceviches y cervesas at one of several nearby restaurants. Yes, the bedding is FIRM. Yes, the decor is simple and rustic. Yes, there is no TV or telephone or alarm clock or ipod dock or pillow menu. In other words, nothing we didn't need and everything we did.

Breakfast, as others have mentioned, is a simple affair but the hotel has a restaurant and if you should need something more, just ask. We saw omelets and waffles and yogurt being served. The staff is accommodating and will satisfy you if they can. We walked a little ways a couple of mornings to get our breakfast and found crepes to croissants to huevos to empanadas.

As we spent our days simply relaxing on the beach under the readily available palapas on the comfortable lounge chairs, I can not speak to the hotel's spa services. We did look at the spa menu and the prices seemed very reasonable (certainly as compared to prices I have seen elsewhere). The beach is just about perfect in my opinion. Plenty of shade if you want it. No huge crowds fighting over the loungers. Gentle surf with easily swimmable water. Hammocks to swing in. All of this about 30 feet from your door. What more can one ask for?

Amaite's location is, again, just about perfect in my opinion. Some may find it a bit close to the main pier and all the "action" but for us this made Holbox easily walkable. We were no more than a few minutes walk from everything we needed. Some of the hotels on the East end of the island, while probably very quiet and more private, are actually a pretty good distance from the village center and if we had stayed at one of these properties I don't believe we would have enjoyed our adventure quite as much. To each their own of course but being in Amaite's central location was an advantage for us.

We did not enjoy Amaite's restaurant frequently. The snacks we did order were tasty and fresh and served with a smile. We went for a late lunch each day at one of several restaurants within sight of the hotel and were never disappointed. I will post separate reviews on those experiences. I can say the bar staff at Amaite prepared very good margaritas and vodka tonics (ginger ale actually but still good according to my revered femme). Do brush up on your Spanish as it will make not only Amaite but the entire Holbox experience more enjoyable.

In summary, it became clear to us why so many fellow travelers seem to be repeat visitors to Isla Holbox. The best word I can think of to describe our experience is "authentic". I am certainly no expert of all things Mexico, but I find it very believable, and a little sad, that much of Mexico probably used to be like Holbox is now. It is our sincere hope Holbox stays the way she is for many years to come because we are already making our plans to return. Those of you that have been will understand this. Those of you that haven't visited should absolutely do so. You will not regret it!

Hasta la vista!

Room Tip: upper level rooms are small but adequate. if you can, splurge for the lower level "suites&quo...

Eduardo and the rest of the staff were friendly and hospitable. The location was perfection, on a beautiful and well maintained slice of the beach yet right at the end of the main road to town. The breakfast of fruit with toast and jam was a light but delicious way to start your morning and drifting back to sleep in a hammock on the beach was a perfect way to continue it! The beds were a little hard but the rooms were clean and well kept. A great value for the money and a wonderful stay on this delightful island!

I recently spent 18 days at Amaite Hotel and Spa on Isla Holbox, Mexico. For the past nine years we have visited this beautiful island and always have enjoyed our stay. This is not Cancun--no high rise hotels or late night parties (except for Mardi Gras). This is a beautiful island with sand roads and golf cart taxi cabs and this lovely hotel right on the beach. Entertainment includes: watching fisherman repair nets: local baseball games (every other Sunday); long, long walks on the sandbar and watching beautiful sunsets every evening.

Our stay was even more wonderful by the manager, Eduardo and the staff that did all they could to introduce us to even more of the island. The hotel is clean and located close to town and on the playa.

We started each day with a wonderful breakfast of homemade toast and a fruit tray of tropical treasures and coffee. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. I gave the hotel a four instead of a five because our friends who also stayed there complained that their beds were hard. Ours were fine and I think they are about to change the mattresses on the other beds.

I totally recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to spend time on a beautiful, peaceful island with wonderful friendly people.

This was my ninth visit to Holbox, but my first stay at Amaite and I highly recommend it. The hotel is recently refurbished and has 5 suites on the ground floor and ten rooms of various configurations on the second floor. We stayed in a double room on the second floor. All rooms face the water. Second floor rooms have balconies facing the gulf for wonderful views. The beach is pristine and well-kept with plenty of sun and shade and comfortable lounge chairs and hammocks. There is a good restaurant on site and the hotel is very convenient to the town and all the other restaurant options there. Finally, the staff is outstanding, everyone friendly and helpful. Edourado, the manager, was terrific in welcoming us and offering advice and arranging tours. We were very pleased and would recommend the hotel to anyone visiting this wonderful island. We return to Holbox because it is a quiet peaceful island, a combination fishing village and resort community. You don't feel isolated here from the community, but immersed in it. It is a low key place, perfect for tranquil relaxing.
