This was the last hotel we visited, it was the best - i would certainly recommend Holbox. We were given the All Inclusive option here for free on arrival as they had overbooked and shifted us to another hotel for the first night.

We were also placed into the master suite. It is a lovely villa kind of a place but i would warn you if you were to share it that it is an open balcony from the top to the living room / sleeping area downstairs.

I would not say the AI was the best deal, if we had of paid the additional cost.

We had great meals in town at a fish restaurant that served a full range of grills. Sorry, don't know the name of it - though if it shows up on my credit card i will update this review.

The beach is a stunning outlook, i would also recommend doing the whale shark tour - we got up close with a whale shark.

Language; There is almost no English spoken at Villas Paraiso del Mar. Juan and the others at the front desk speak it well and a few of the staff can communicate in it but by and large you won’t hear much English. During our stay the guest breakdown was around 60% Mexican. 20% German and the rest a mix. One of the things I like to do on vacation is to try and learn the language so I enjoyed myself. I even tried to pick up some German “Guten Tag Richard”. I did not find the language barrier a deterrent in any way.

Must Bring; Water shoes and insect repellent. There are a lot of mosquitoes here, at least when were went in mid-June. You cannot leave your room without applying repellent and re-applying through the day. I did not find this an inconvenience myself since I was applying sunscreen anyway.

Check in; Very smooth. We had bought the privilege plan but there was no record of this at the front desk when we arrived. When I showed Juan our reservation he immediately corrected it with no fuss.

Privilege; I would recommend this, not only do you get top shelf liquor but also there are some items on the snack bar that you get for free that others must pay for. They have 6-7 different tequilas and I enjoyed trying them all, both straight and in margaritas. I highly recommend the Don Julio marg.

Room: The jr. suite is well laid out and quite large, it was kept spotless. There is a mini bar which you don’t pay for if you are all inclusive.

Grounds: My wife and I have been to the Riviera Maya many times over the last 12 years staying at different resorts, Villas Paraiso del Mar is, by far, the most beautiful. You really feel as though you are in the jungle. There are winding paths through lush foliage and very pretty flowers.

Beach; There are many palapas here and they are under a canopy of palm trees and yet it remains very hot. There is no breeze what so ever. The lounge chairs are about 200 ft. from the water’s edge and then you have to wade through 20-30 feet of thick slimy seaweed and wade out about 200 feet to reach a decent depth. Here is where the water shoes come in handy, with them on the seaweed is not a problem. The bottom is nice soft sand with no rocks. There is no snorkeling here as there is nothing to see.

Pool; The pool is small and only 4 feet deep. There are 10 palapas around it with 2 lounge chairs each. This may not seem like many but we never waited more than 20 minutes for one to open up and most times didn't wait at all. The lobby is only 15 feet away and it has some plastic coated sofas you can use if you can’t access a palapa. There is a bar and snack bar here also. Even though the pool is small we found it to be just fine for jumping in and getting wet to cool off. We spent most of our time at the pool.

Food; Breakfast 7-10, lunch 1-3, dinner 7-10, snack bar 11-6. The restaurant is buffet style; it is not the 50 foot long buffet you see in the large resorts but always has a good verity of choices and is generally very good. My wife is a vegetarian and she said there wasn't enough protein for her. We talked to Chef Roberto about this and he made sure there was something for her at every meal. He really went way out of his way to please her. Chef Roberto was wonderful, thank you sir! The term “snack bar” really doesn't do it justice. The food is cooked to order and very good. The best meal I had at the resort was the fresh shrimp with balsamic sauce served at the snack bar.

Tips; You will be treated exactly the same here whether you tip or not. Don’t expect preferential treatment because you tip. It won’t happen. The only reason to tip is if you feel it is the right thing to do. It will be appreciated.

Service; Service is second to none. You will feel as though you are at a 5 star resort. There is always someone nearby who will get for you what you need. The language barrier can make this a little difficult at times but for me it always worked out perfectly.

Whale Sharks! We booked through the hotel for convenience sake; it was only about $10 more per person. They picked us up at the beach in front of the resort and we took about 1 ½ hours to reach them. There were 12-15 whale sharks and everyone got to swim with them twice. Everyone on our boat (10 people) was absolutely thrilled. On the trip back we stopped and fished using lines that were provided, all together we caught around 20 red snapper and grouper. The Captain’s helper made cerviche which we ate while docked in a nearby cove. It was delicious. On the trip we saw whale sharks, dolphins, huge manta rays, and flamingos. This trip is a must.

Villas Paraiso del Mar; is a wonderful resort. As everyone else has mentioned it is quiet and relaxing; there is no night life. The lobby bar stays open until 11pm but it is quiet. We were told the the resort was at 100% occupancy while we were there but it never felt crowded. The food, service, and atmosphere made this one of my favorite vacations.

The things dreams are made of. Luxury on a Caribbean island and just didn't want it to end! The beachfront location is so much better than the photos show and the hotel feels very secluded and high end. The staff are very kind and attentive to your every need. We arrived early but checking into our room wasn't a problem. Excellent room with top quality bed and bedding and views to remember for ever. The beach is the main attraction and boat trips/fishing trips and water sports are popular activities here although bird watching seemed the thing to get into as there were so many beautiful birds around. Food and drinks were great at the hotel and we only ate out a couple of times which was just snacks in the small town. Bring flip flops rather than high heels ladies as it is laid back island life in Holbox. Loved every minute of our holiday and wish all hotels were this good.

The location of this hotel is wonderful a short walk into town along the beach road. The rooms are large and have plenty of windows but the floor does creak and may cause an issue with the guest below you. Request a room on the first floor as they have patio, the second floor has a deck and the third floor has nothing. The landscaping is spectacular to give you the feeling you are in the jungle. Swimming pool is a bit small but you do have the sea within walking distance. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is served buffet style and it has a good selection at all meals. Snack bar is available at the pool. If you want a place to get away from it all this is the place. They can arrange golf cart rentals, whale shark swimming and a host of other items and it will be charged to your room.

Room Tip: You are on a island in the jungle - don't forget mosquito repellent or long sleeve shirt and/or...

My husband and I spent a week here, starting out in a garden room (which was lovely) and then upgraded to a king suite, #500, which I highly recommend! It was a perfect perch to while away the time, gazing out onto the water, watching people stroll along the beach, and enjoy a glass of wine watching the sunsets. We enjoyed breakfast there every morning and did not do an all inclusive as the restaurants in the nearby village (within walking distance) are good. Susana at the front desk is really wonderful.

We stayed at this resort from June 5th to the 14th, 2014. The resort is situated on a lovely stretch of beach. The downside was the amount of smelly seaweed which is endless across the entire beach front. There is a make shift bridge to walk over the seaweed but it was varnished and very slippery so be careful.

The rooms were clean, as were the grounds. The resort could use some updating as far as the cushions in the lobby, rooms and beach loungers as they were either ripped, dirty or had mold. ***Take bug spray!!! As the bugs were bad everywhere on the resort and the beach***

The buffet is small, and choices limited. Again, keep in mind this is a small resort and you will not have the selection found at larger ones.

There is a sand bar in front of the resort that you can walk for at least 3 to 4 kms depending on the tide you will see the local birds (pelicans, flamingos etc) in their natural habitat. Rent a golf cart, it's worth the $40.00 US for four hours. We went from one end of the island to the other and it was a blast. Unfortunately, we did not book the whale shark tour, other guests we spoke to said it was an amazing experience (1300.00 pesos) Season starts in June, peak time is August for the tour. There are restaurants along the beach front and in town to check out or simply sit and have a Corona break.

In general there are some really nice points about this resort/island and some disappointments. The professional photos on Trip Advisor really didn't match up with the resort, my guess is that most of them date back to when the resort was originally opened. The transfer from Cancun airport to the resort went smooth getting there and leaving. This cost is over and above your accommodation (approx. $300.00US)

The view from the room was out of a brochure. The sandy beach was baby fine sand and the food here was well above the norm. We had a ball here, it is just so tranquil there was hardly anyone around on the beach and the feel is relaxed and chilled. The other guests were pleasant and the BBQ was a well organized lovely night. The sun chairs are plentiful and you have a good choice of places to sit on the sand. If you stay there long enough, later in the early evening you see the flamingos fly right overhead on their way home, beautiful and very special. Bringing some binoculars would be a good idea, the wildlife and birds are spectacular. This whole vacation was top class and we made the most of this amazing place.
