“Our daughter's Holbox Dream wedding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2012

This is a VERY belated review of our trip in April 2012. We live in France and our daughter wanted a romantic wedding on a beach; they couldn't have chosen a better place! Thirty family and guests made the rather long trip from Paris, and others from Canada and the USA, but oh it was worth it. Lovely island, beautiful hotel, friendly staff, great food; Alizee and Jeremy organized the most most wonderful meal for the reception and the decoration was beyond our expectations. We spent an idyllic week on the island and were sad to leave. My husband and I have every intention of returning soon for a vacation in this completely unspoiled place.
The Merciers.

We looked up this small hotel at a friends suggestion. From the very first phone call to the email confirmation of deposit everything was professional and easy. Upon arrival, the staff seemed to know who we were even by name. The grounds are maintained perfectly. The pool was centrally situated. The rooms impecably decorated elegantly simple. The location is off center but not too too far from downtown (5 minute walk). They provided us (without requesting it) a crib for our 7 month young daughter. They even turned on the AC prior us moving in for her comfort. The lounging area on the beach was perfect. We enjoyed one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. I cannot wait to return for another day of bliss as a quick weekend getaway for me and my family from the bustling Riviera Maya.

The hotel is like you see it in the website: cute, small and right on the beach. The room was very clean and nice!
We were on Holbox to swim with the whalesharks which was amazing! Unfortunately that was the only good thing about our stay at the island. We were there for 3 days and it rained for 2 days. The mosquitoes were everywhere! There is not much to do on the island and when its raining and mosquitos are eating you up it´s not exactly a dreamvacation...

But the hotel was great!

This hotel is in a nice location on the beach and close to town. Grounds are superbly maintained. Decor in the rooms is first rate. But that is where positives end. Rooms, pretty as they are, are not very functional. No drawers or even surfaces to unpack. No place to hang wet bathinsuites. No safe. Only one key per room creates constant need to coordinate. Water is not pottable, which is par for the course in Mexico, but bottled water for brushing teeth was provided only first day. After that we were charged extra 10 pesos per tiny bottle. And we had to go to reception to get it. Really? You call that hospitality and service?
I came with a group and we all paid for 2 people sharing a double room. But there are no double rooms in this hotel. One queen bed and a cot.
There are no beach towels and no cushions on hard beach chairs. Very crammped feeling. Kids playing in the pool are heard everywhere. No bar or restaurant on premisses.
I loved Holbox island and the whalesharks. But next time i will pick a diffeent hotel.

Holbox is a recurrent destination for us because of its nice quiet beach and romantic ambience. There is nothing to do but relax, swim, read and spend a lot of time with your partner. Beach is clean, the ocean is peaceful with all kinds of blue colors and is not packed. You will not find the loud music of the aquaerobics like the hotels in Cancun, there are no night clubs or late nite parties, is more of a go out for dinner and go to bed early town. Important, make sure you get enough cash, we ran out of cash and the ATMs were not working because there was an internet outage and no place takes credit card.
Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful as well as mostly all people in the island. We took a trip to swim with the shark whales which is amazing... must do if you are visiting the island on summer time.
The hotel doesnt have a restaurant but there are many available walking distance. They refer you to the "Faro viejo" restaurant (another of their properties). Food is acceptable but amazingly expensive compared to the other restaurants. Is convenient, and close to the hotel but is not the best restaurant we tried and we consider it to be over priced.

Room Tip: Rooms literaly are in front of the beach. You open the door on your room and start walking on the w...

I believe this is one of the nicest hotels in Holbox.
My wife and I stayed there with friends. We arrived very late
They had a sign for us at main reception that our rooms were ready as they were almost closing for the night and they will meet us in the morning. We got to our rooms and they are really nice, with nice décor, big and they had set an additional bed for our friends as they were not a couple. We already felt the island flavor as it was very close to the beach, a few steps away. Bad thing, our room had a huge roach in the bathroom which I tried to kill, but slipped into de door frame, it did not show its dirty face anymore during our stay. We believe in this island and with a really humid and warm weather it is difficult to control this hideous pest.
We went walking to have dinner downtown and tried the famous Lobster pizza, which is just great to have it. Even that the front desk clerk mentioned it was not good anymore. Do not listen to them, they have it everyday, of course it is not good, you are on vacation, give it a try, you will not regret it.
We continue walking and saw very nice shopping stores with summer dresses for my wife and lots of hand made crafts.
We returned to the hotel just to sit on the lounge chairs on shore to watch the starry sky and to our surprise we had the opportunity to see many shotting stars, sky is as clear as you have ever seen it. Amazing!
Next morning we went to have breakfast, which is included at Faro Viejo, but only toast with butter and marmalade, canned juice, cereal and coffee. I do not drink coffee and have cereal at home so I wanted to try the eggs which I paid. They were the worst eggs in my life. Sincerely, it would be better to offer a torta de cochinita or some local Yucatecan food for breakfast. We used the pool the rest of the day, and combined it with the beach.
Because of the experience at Faro Viejo, we did not have lunch there. We tried a different restaurant, just next door and it was delicious. We had a really fresh whole fish and guacamole.
Overall, it was a very nice experience in Holbox, next we want to try Las Palapas, which looks even nicer, and it is just next door.
To hotel management: you should give directions on your website to get to your hotel, we decided to walk from the pier and got lost, of course no body told us it was a straight line towards Faro Viejo, we saw a sign saying "hotels" in a different direction and followed that sign, as they were only taxis, which we kept asking and they would say, we do not know that hotel. They just wanted to take their service, but it is a 5 min walk from the pier.
We wanted to use the jacuzzi, and the water was colder than our beers! Do not offer if it is not really hot!

Room Tip: They only have a couple of ocean front rooms, you really do not need them, all rooms are a few steps...
