We needed a stop halfway between Campeche and Cancun, so settled on the charming and historic village of Izamal, 30 miles east of Merida. The Santo Domingo (about 10-12 rooms) lies on a smallholding on the edge of the town where the owners keep a few animals "to give them a good life". Their five dogs quickly adopt any newcomers to the hotel. Our "comfort" room was set in rambling tropical gardens, large, clean, and with everything one needed. Next to the pool is a thatched bar and restaurant where breakfast (included) and dinner (if required() are laid out. The owners go out of their way to make guests welcome. You are offered a welcome drink on arrival, and the breakfast was by a long way the best we had in Mexico. All this comes for about £50 per night. Altogether this was such an idyllic spot that we regretted having allocated only one night to it.
