“Nice Park, Nothing "Special"”

Our hotel was close to this park and it was a nice park to walk through on our way to other things, but it did not seem to be a place to stop and spend time. There are some nice surrounding buildings worth snapping a few pictures of, but not sure that I would "recommend" that you seek out this park.

“Huancayo's Central Hub”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2013

This is a great place to sit and watch people going about there business. There are plenty of benches in the square where you can sit or even have a picnic. People gather here and it is bordered by the cathedral and the main street. It's also where organised trips of the region leave from.

On Sundays there is a raising of the flag ceremony and the square is the focus of all kinds of other civic and military gatherings and ceremonies. While I was there, for example, there was a running race along the main street and the local dignitaries and military big wigs were gathered in the square.

“It could be better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 September 2012

Huancayo is a commercial town. There is no traditional colonial square with lovely buildings around. The plaza was expanded some decades ago, but most of the buildings are recent additions.

“Plaza de la Constitucion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2012

This is the central plaza in Huancayo, which is bounded on one side by a lovely cathedral. As I was there on a splenidly warm and gorgeous Sunday, there was an enormous amount of activity, including an outpouring of communicants from the cathedral, a host of vendors and entertainers, a huge military presence with tons of pomp and circumstance, a phalanx of local politicians, and so forth. It's a great place to spend an hour or two just people-watching. And, on Sundays, a few blocks down from the Plaza is a quite large, bustling, colorful market, which draws folks from the entire region for wares, food, music, and fun. And, even though I am opposed to malls, close to the Plaza there is a new mall across from the downtown train station with a very large and complete grocery/dry goods store on its first floor, including a good deli, produce section, etc. It's like a small Costco or Walmart, which can be useful if you're travelling in the region.
