“Nice place”
Reviewed 28 November 2013 credit card Amex Cardmember Review

Nice place but a bit expensive for the room. One of the things I didn't like was the number of insects outside the door room. It was overall good experience. Next to wineries and the area is quiet and nice views from the room.

This hotel is part of an overall golf resort located perfectly in the wine growing Hunter Valley of NSW. The rooms are large and comfortable but due to us being a long way from the main building, the walk to breakfast etc was a little too far. Food in the adjacent golf centre was excellent and as you would expect the wines were superb. I suggest you order by the glass so you can try different styles. Kangaroos are plentiful on the property and are relatively tame. Our main gripe is the surcharge they place on credit card payments when settling the account. To our mind this is just another cost of them doing business such as providing soap, shampoo or toilet paper and as such should not incur a surcharge. If you agree then please complain at every hotel which has this policy as the trend is becoming widespread

Room Tip: Rooms closer to reception involve far less walking

Great location, close to a great spread of wineries and restaurants... if you're a golfer, possibly paradise with views of the 10th from all the rooms / villas. Rooms large enough to live in and well kitted out.

Perhaps an off day in respect of cleaning and maintenance, but when weighed against the (substantial) price, has cost this hotel a 5star, my recommendation and any plans to return.
Several phone calls and visits to reception to get maintenance to turn up, ant trail in room and a few guest short and curlies. This may sound harsh, but I was also under the impression that this hotel was a little more secluded, rather than being on the edge of the somewhat vast Vintage complex, sharing the facilities with all.

Beds big enough to allow sleeping with windmill partners, very soft beds, nice and quiet at night.

The spa I understand from my partner was rather special and very much worth visiting.

All in all, if you're looking for a high class getaway, near everything play golf and your partner wants a fabulous 3.5hr massage, you could do a lot worse.

My husband and I have just stayed 3nights in a king spa villa at chateau elan and had a fabulous time. Frankly we could not find any faults. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. The accommodation was superb and had kangeroos outside our villa each afternoon. The cleanliness was excellent and we had a well equipped kitchen. It is central to everything in the hunter. However I would like to make two points. There needs to be a divider between rooms on the balcony for privacy purposes . More importantly if you are a non smoker it could be a potential problem with smokers outsider the balcony and the smoke will drift into your room and one can smell the smoke which is awful. I would like to see a dedicated smoking area for smokers so us poor non smokers are not confined to our room with balcony door closed in gorgeous weather. Definitely not fair.

Thanks for reading this Martina and Roger Bondi

Room Tip: 6/160king spa villa gorgeous

Overall, relaxing getaway with the best service and rooms, close to all the wineries!

Service - excellent. Received a complimentary bottle of wine to celebrate a special occasion.
Value - good.
Sleep Quality - excellent. Very quiet and secluded rooms. Comfortable beds.
Cleanliness - excellent.
Location - good. Close to many wineries for wine tasting and food. Also close to Cessnock town if wanting fast food or groceries etc...
Rooms - very spacious and well designed. We stayed in a villa which had a large bathroom, lounge and our own balcony looking out onto the golf park.
Spa - good spa bath in our bathroom.

Tips: would suggest visiting the wineries for lunch and food, which were all great. The in-house restaurant unfortunately served very average food.

My wife and I stayed for a weekend getaway. We loved every minute of it! Very happy with the service from the staff. Richard our concierge was terrific. He arranged a booking and transfer for us at Amanda's Restaurant. The food and wine was incredible. (Would highly recommend) We stayed in a King spa Villa, which was very clean and well set out.
If you are looking for an escape to the country I would say definitely check out Chateau Elan.

Room Tip: I believe some rooms are open plan style ie The spa is in the same room as the bedroom. These rooms...

We stayed here for the weekend in a 'Spa Suite' which was very nice but nothing special for the price. They call it a Spa Suite as the bath has a 'spa' in it (although I couldn't get ours to work) and the bath is in the 'room' rather than in a bathroom ! The only real luxury touch was the better than average (and very comfortable) bed and the Nespresso machine in the room ! What really let our stay down was the restaurant , 'Legends Grill' which when you first walk in seems very nice ! However on arrival we struggled to get the attention of any staff! One of which was more interested on speaking on a mobile phone! However un-deterred we decided to have a cocktail while we waited. The cocktail arrived after much noises of glass breakage (obviously accidental) at the bar and the cocktails not only looked non appetizing , but the glass was 3 quarter full of which one cocktail was so strong it was un drinkable and the 2nd seemed to have no alcohol in at all ! At $20 a pop we were not impressed and sent them back of which we were not offered a replacement and when we requested to have them removed from our bill, we were told 'we will see what we can do'. Our meal of 'steak' cooked (one assumed) to order took ages to arrive and as we waited the wait staff cleared our table of side plates and starters cutlery as we were not having starters . In a restaurant where the mains start at $38 one does expect a level of service, however we couldn't hear ourselves speak over the clatter of china and cutlery as these items were removed from the table around us!
Finally our main meal arrived of which mine and a fellow dinners fillet steak was cooked as requested however the chips were of canteen quality, being 'soggy' which one would associate with cheap frozen chips ! My husband ordered the 'rib' eye steak medium rare, which was raw, tough and dry as if it had been part cooked earlier and reheated (barely) to serve ! I would NOT recommend this restaurant and for a GRILL not to be able to serve up a well cooked steak is less than disappointing !
The restaurants manager did try and make amends when we spoke to her by offering another meal , with the end result being my husbands meal was taken off the bill ..
