“At the Caves Motor Inn”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

We stayed here on 16th December 2013 to be close to the Waitomo Caves. The caves are worth the experience. From there, the drive to the caves is not a long one - perhaps 15 to 20 minutes by the time tickets are organised for the cave tour. There is the The Big Apple Café near the inn(less than 5 minutes drive?) - an incredibly good place to eat and drink for breakfast lunch or dinner. Now, to the inn. Our room was clean and affordable. We were given clean towels, a TV clean beds, and a small fridge. It was all quite acceptable. We three(one is a child) paid $130 NZ to stay one night. We were given free internet access (from the lounge area near reception) that did not work for us. We were told that there was sometimes issues with their connection but eventually it would be sorted out. It was the only place in during our 12 day stay in NZ that we were not able to successfully get internet access. I assume from the manager's reaction that it was unusual that access wasn't available to us, though we weren't given a solution to the problem.
While the room was clean, it also appeared to have been "fumigated" with too much air freshener or something like that. Additionally, there was cow urine smell wafting every so often through our room. We worked out that there are cows in a paddock next door to the inn. That wasn't as bad as I thought once we got used to the intermittent odour. We were very surprised to see two big trucks with dog trailers parked right next to and along a set of steps that were critical to be used as a thoroughfare for guests to walk to and from reception from and to their rooms. I was so gobsmacked at where these trucks were parked that I photographed them in relation to those steps. It did require us to take extra care when walking back to our room in the dark. Nonetheless, our experience was mostly good there. We didn't have breakfast or dinner at the Inn. We assumed from what we saw that it would be a good experience to dine there. Would I stay there again? Probably not. I'd be interested in trying something else nearby or even the Bed and Breakfast homestead type of stay.
Thanks Caves Motor Inn. From Nando and family

A great stay at this motor inn. We were visiting the waitamo caves on our way back up to Auckland and found this accommodation suited our location needs. The Rooms were clean and staff very friendly and helpful. Didn't have meal in the restaurant but told they are really nice. Would definitely stay here again.

Caves motor inn- the place was perfect for us. We had 5 people in our group. I contacted one of their managers, Linare who worked with us to book the perfect room for our party. Pros: room was very close to caVes. Cons: no free internet. Internet did not work for us but the manager gave us a refund because it did not work so that was nice and fair of them to do that. We loved waitomo and so internet was not really our priority. So no biggie...

We booked the connecting family room at the Caves Motor Inn, as no other local accommodations seemed to offer family accommodation. The room(s) were a double room, connected to a double + single room and was perfect for our family of 4. Although it was the middle of Winter, we found the rooms heated up quickly with the heat pump, and we had to turn it down to low setting overnight. Staff were very friendly, and the rooms were comfortable. The buildings are older style, but there had obviously been a refurbishment done recently, as the carpets and vinyls, benchtop and basins seemed newish. The bedspreads also seemed new, and with the flat screen TV, gave the room a more modern feel. The Inn is easy driving distance to the caves, 10km up the road.
We did not use the restaurant or room service. There is a well stocked supermarket, nearby in Otorohanga.

Although the accomodation was somewhat small and the heating wasn't great, the rooms and beds are reasonably comfortable and adequate. The staff were friendly and if you needed anything they were happy to help (although the didn't clean the room during our stay). The location is good, just 10km from not only the Waitomo Caves, but also Otorohanga and Te Kuiti. There is other accomodation which is closer to the caves (I.e. in Waitomo Village) but this is close enough and there is a shuttle service which can take you to the caves, if you need it. The restaurant, although not busy when we visited, was fantastic. The service was good and the food delicious and filling. Would recommend it. Overall, this motel is decent value for money.

Room Tip: As the motel is situated on a highway, rooms at the back of the motel (i.e. away from the road) will...

Friendly service. Big rooms but difficult to heat up mid-winter with one small heat pump. Very cold in the bathroom and only has a single sized electric blanket for a queen bed. Granted we are used to a hotter climate. We were given a milk carton at check-in but only to find there was another in the fridge. However later in the day when we returned we discovered someone had come in the room to take the extra milk out. A little disturbing that they did so while we were gone. We stayed here because we thought we would be too exhausted after visiting the caves to drive but we discovered that it may have been just as easy to stay in the next town Otorohanga 10mins north. We had to drive to the next town for dinner and breakfast anyway since the Inn's restaurant need to be notified hours earlier if we want dinner/breakfast. May be good for families to stay but if travelling as couples then there are other choices nearby.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the highway would be quieter

Well we were billeted here as part of our cycling Tor of New Zealand as the Waitomo Caves Hotel changed our booking for some unknown reason. One of our group had a room that was so damp she had to put the electric blanket on to dry out a bit of bed to sleep on. The rooms were a decent size but well used and in dire need of fresh paint. The State Highway was a constant source of noise overnight and our room was just about as far away from the road as it was possible to get. Indeed in the morning about 8 HGV's were parked up at the front of the motel.

The place served our purpose of somewhere to sleep and a microwave to make porridge for the next day's ride but it offered little in addition and I won't be going back in a hurry.

Room Tip: If you have to stay then get a room as far from the road as possible
