We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting the caves. There were 7 of us in our group, 3 adults and 4 children but we were easily accommodated in the 3 bedrooms, each of which had a useful combination of beds. The 2 toilets and 2 showers were also very helpful for a big group. This is a great option for staying in with kids with lots of space to play and run around outside while also checking out the animals. Narita spent a good amount of time showing us around and letting the kids feed and interact with the animals - they especially loved the 7 naughty piglets! I particularly loved the way Narita learned the kids names and chatted with them telling them lots about the farm. Also, when I realised I had left something important behind when we got home, Narita went out of her way to locate it and posted it back straight away - so helpful and understanding. We hope to stay again in the future.

We rented the house as we were travelling with our 3 kids (all boys) down to New Plymouth. The house was perfect as it was cosy clean and comfortable. It is very low key so it's easy with kids. It was all very casual and we only met the owners once on arrival.

I would have been disappointed if we had gone there specifically for the animals though. There was a lovely horse, 2 llamas and some chickens and a rabbit. We didn't see any other animals and it was pretty much walk around and have a look. We couldn't feed them but kids enjoyed looking at them. Seemed like it used to be a working farm or petting farm but was no longer?

We really enjoyed the relaxed nature of the arrangement and obviously the caves down the road. Boys would have really liked seeing the pigs (as offered but it didn't happen).

My husband and I have never experienced a farmstay on our vacations before so we wanted to give it a try. We booked our farmstay with Waitomo Farmstay, formerly called Buds B&B, and we loved our stay!

If you are allergic to animals or don't like animals, this is not the place for you.

If you have to stay at a 5 star luxury resort, this is not the place for you.

If you don't like small town feel and quiet nights, this is not the place for you.

However, if you love animals, enjoy peace and quiet, and want a great atmosphere for the family to have a great holiday, then Waitomo Farmstay is a great choice!

We stayed in the 3 bedroom cottage facing the pasture. Each of the bedrooms have multiple beds, so you have many choices when finding that perfect night sleep. In the living area, there is a couch, arm chair, and a dining set for 4. We don't have children, but if we did, this place has many amenities that would make our lives easier. They have pack and play set, strollers, high chair, toys, and books to for kids. The kitchen is pretty basic, but you will find a microwave, hot water boiler, pots/pans, and all the utensils you need to cook a basic meal. Although this place used to be a B&B, they no longer serve breakfast. There are 2 markets very close by so you can definitely fun groceries. The bathroom in the 3 bedroom cottage has 2 showers and 2 toilets, so you can have a bigger family stay without running into logistical issues. They provide soap, shampoo, and clean towels. The TV is quite old and we flipped through about 3 working channels. There is free wifi so you can stay connected if you need. It got a bit cold during our stay and there is a small furnace that helps a bit.

The location of Waitomo Farmstay is fantastic for exploring the caves! Down the road from the farm are the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, many cave adventure companies, and there's horseback riding right on the premise! Town is about 5 minutes drive but things close early. If you want takeaway for dinner, Kylie suggests Sonny's Chinese. We had the Flying Horse takeaway and ended up with 2 mains and a appetizer for less than $20NZ.

Kylie and Brian designed the farmstay for families to interact with animals! Kylie rescues animals of all kinds and brings them to her farm. She trains them and makes sure they are friendly to her guests and she will take you on a tour to meet them if you want. Animals on the farm include sheep (of course!), horses, pigs, rabbits, cats, llamas, doves, and cows. If the weather cooperates, you can go for a brief horseride with the hosts or go for an extended ride, which we didn't get to do since it rained so hard while we stayed there. There are also 2 kittens on the premise - Smudge and Muppet -- who will love you and stay with you if you allow. We took in Muppet for a night and he was just the sweetest cat to have around.
