I stayed here while I was on the kiwi experience and thought it was great. Lovely sized rooms for four people all with separate beds- what more could a backpacker want. Nice and close to the glow worm caves as well. The staff were lovely and the food from the restaurant was reasonably priced and well worth it. Definitely get the bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast!!!!

I traveled with a friend. The hostel is conveniently placed in the center of the little town. But that is one of the only good things. If you are in desperate need of a bed, then just pay the extra money not to be in the lodge.

The negatives...
I barely slept. The pillow was probably not legally considered a pillow, and they gave me sheets that were stained with what appeared to be blood. They also had a large tour group book a lot of rooms, which clued us in on how paper thin all of the walls are. I also had issues getting them to pick up their phone before 9:30 am to tell them I would be a little early. However, upon arrival there was a sign saying that reception opened at 8 am...

The positives...
Cheap. Good (community) showers with nice water pressure and temperature. It is conveniently placed, and it has a cafe inside so you don't need to go far for food, drinks, or alcohol.

I stayed here for two nights in March. It's a convenient location for exploring Waitomo. I had booked a single chalet but was upgraded to a twin/double. They joined the two single beds together to make a double. The room had a small fridge, television and ensuite. The room was clean and in good condition. As well as the chalets there is the Lodge, which has backpacker accommodation with dorm, twin, double and single rooms. Both nights I stayed the Lodge had guests from tour bus companies staying. The hostel is a ‘dry hostel’ so you can only drink in their bar. Kiwi Paka has a licensed café onsite, Morepork Café & Pizzera, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is reasonably priced and there is more than just pizza.

I stayed at Kiwi Paka in Waitomo during my first trip through NZ and I was very pleased with it. The hostel is clean, well-kept and the staff are very friendly. Water pressure in the showers was good, the kitchen was well-stocked and it was easy to get a good night's sleep.

The Morepork Pizzeria is worth a visit as well for their BBQ chicken pizza.

We chose this hostel because it was very close to the caves and it actually is very close (about 500 metres of the Glowworm cave). Other than that is an average hostel. It is not cheap but I guess you are paying for the location. Double room was standard and toilets were ok as well. I have to say that the restaurant inside the premises is very good, pizzas and chips were awesome and in large portions. I would recommend it as a good option if you wanna visit the caves and then spend the night there.

Room Tip: Try not to get a room in the first two rooms starting from the main entrance (too noisy) nor a room...

Our stay at Kiwi Paka was fine, the room was clean though basic, the resteraunt and bar were good. There was a fair amount of noise from the corridor and as the fire doors were closed they banged every few minutes. This is however due to untrained backpackers who dont understand backpacking etiquette. Maybe sighns should be put on doors asking that people close them gently instead of just letting go?? The showers and sinks were clean. All in all a good affordable place to stay..

Room Tip: Ask for a room as far away as possible from fire doors.

In the 7 months we have been travelling this is the worst place we have stayed. Booked a double room. Bed was tiny and was like sleeping on a trampoline. Anytime someone moved in the whole block you could hear it. Even with earplugs I was up half the night. People were smoking in hallway and at 3am two idiots decided to have a chat outside the rooms you could hear every word. After 30 mins I had to go and ask them to shut up. Weird stain on the bed and bugs in the kitchen. Caves are excellent but make it a day trip. Nothing else in village to stay for. And please don't stay here!!!!!
