This place is a grand old hotel in need of some love and care. Fortunately new owners have recently taken over and seem to have the right stuff.
Loaded with history and charm, great location and (via Grabone) good value for $.
We look forward to returning to try the proposed seafood restaurant and general improvements

And for the record: paranormally disappointing ;-)

went down for a weekend break away, nice old hotel was the former HTC, slowly being done up but no noise when there., central to most places there, up the hill so a nice view down onto most other places, caves are just a wee stroll down the road.
Only trouble was no dinner that night due to the AB's playing , so a good feed of fish and chips , wine in front of the open fire was had.
be nice once all done.

Room Tip: the turret looked a great room to have.

We stayed here recently (in winter) and I enjoyed it.I accept though though that its air of faded majesty may not suit many who prefer conveniences over character however the the hotel does have a bar, an open fire, and does dinner and brekkie.
Our group enjoyed the space and the service from the staff. While the the meals were not gourmet the produce was good quality and they were well prepared. So yes the rooms are clean and the beds comfy but the fittings (or the layout) are not modern so if you're not keen on older quirky accommodation then try having dinner or brekkie there OR if you haven't booked something (hey... we were there in winter) ASK to see the room first. You might just love it.

Stayed here for one night after visiting the glowworm caves. Stayed in winter so hotel was very quiet (only 4 cars in car park). Can imagine this was once a grand hotel with lots of history. Given its age, it is very creaky and cold. Room was nice and comfortable and the oil filled radiator eventually warmed it up. Was strange not to have a blind on bathroom window given the window was not frosted and right in front of the shower!! The bathroom suite was very tired with chips on the ceramic sink and bath. Bed was large and comfortable. Had a few drinks in the lounge in front of the open fire in the evening. I must say it does have that haunted house on the hill feeling though! No evening meal served, but does do breakfast although we didn't try it.

We recently got a special offer for a night at this hotel. While it is a bit tired, a bit like FawltyTowers in some ways, it is still a great place to stay. The rooms and decor are a bit run-down, but it has new operators as at last week who have plans to improve it back to its glory days. It is full of character and to my mind is the only place to stay in Waitomo. Much more interesting than a modern motel or hotel. Great location and views, lots of atmosphere. Well worth a visit. We wish the new operators all the best in their endeavours.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room, especially if you have two couples adjoining.
