I stayed one night at the Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge, and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I discovered the property on an attraction website and decided to look into it because it was one of the cheapest. It really did provide excellent value for the money I paid.
I arrived around dinnertime and was pleasantly greeted by Colin, one of the owners. He quickly showed me my room and recommended a few places to get some dinner. He also mentioned that I could check out some of the glow worms after nightfall on a local path, and provided a flashlight to use as well.
The room was simple and comfortable, including a large bed and small television - not too many Colin's homemade biscuits as well! There was also a small rectangular ensuite bathroom with a toilet, sink and shower. I found the bed to be typical of New Zealand comfort, not overly plush but soft enough for a nice sleep. I also tend to like foam pillows, which delightfully are popular around the country including this guest lodge.
A few things to note about the room - there is no air conditioning so in the summer, you may find it stuffy although there is a fan to keep a breeze going. There is also no toiletries except a bottle of shower gel so you'll have to bring your own, which I was prepared for. The bed also had an electric blanket on it which leads me to believe the rooms could get a bit cold in the winter.
Other points to mention about the property - parking is provided by way of the gravel lot next door. You can also help yourself to the grapes that are growing all around the common areas - they are delicious. Wireless internet is provided for a fee - $2 an hour based on the honor system. Breakfast was also provided in the rate and including cereals, toast, drinks and fruit.
Overall, I really enjoyed my stay for one night here. If you are looking for a place to rest your head after all the Waitomo adventures, this is a great choice. It's pretty central in the village with places to eat nearby. The room is comfortable and there are some really nice amenities included in the rate.
