Abseil Breakfast Inn
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 December 2013

The Abseil Breakfast Inn was definitely one of my wife and I's favourite places to stay while we were in New Zealand. Our hosts, John and Helen, were welcoming and cooked us some of the best eggs I've ever had in my life!

The inn has four rooms, all of which were beautifully decorated and had a very cozy feel to them. We stayed in the Bush Room for one night and it was clean and comfortable, with our own bathroom in the room. The view of the town is really something too. The Abseil has a very elevated location, so elevated that you really have to floor your rental car to get up the little road leading to the B&B. Their sign indicating the entrance actually says, "Approach With Enthusiasm!"

If you're staying here's it's because you're probably doing some sort of activity involving the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. If you're getting wet, John and Helen provide you with towels for your excursion and even soap to shower with afterwards. We were also able to leave our luggage there while visiting the caves and then picked our stuff up on the way out of town that day. Plus the caves are only about a three minute drive away so that's another reason to stay here.

It really was a fantastic place to base ourselves in Waitomo. We would have stayed longer just for the B&B!

I can't say enough nice things about John and Helen. We came in late at night after a lovely day of exploring the caves, and they immediately booked a delicious dinner. The next day we had to take off early for Tongariro, and they provided a delicious breakfast for us and even sent us off with sandwiches for our hike! We stayed in the swamp room which was very cozy and warm, and had a fantastic big tub. They have a beautiful location on the top of the hill, and were just lovely hosts - we wish we could have stayed longer!

Room Tip: The swamp room has a great bathtub!

Out of all the hotels we have so far stayed in within NZ, the Abseil Breakfast Inn was certainly the one with the best hosts. They were so warm and kind and such great communicators. The breakfast is wonderful. The couple makes a wonderful breakfast with a special Waitomo egg option that has a secret recipe. My mother is still trying to figure it out.
Can only recommend. You'll have a wonderful stay with at the Abseil Inn for sure!!!

Room Tip: It's not about the rooms. It's about the wonderful hosts and the great activities surroundin...

We spent 16 nights across NZ (both islands) in mostly B&Bs and a few hotels. Abseil Inn was our first B&B experience in NZ, set on a high ridge overlooking the Waitomo Village and countryside views . We stayed for 1 night. Our hosts Helen and John were very helpful they provided us towels for our black labyrinth tubing/caving experience the next morning. Their lounge area made us feel at home and their friendly kiwi hospitality made us very comfortable. Breakfast was elaborate with different kinds of honeys on table. The driveway as other reviewers have highlighted is steep and quite a thrill 

I read the Trip Advisor reviews of this place and just wanted to experience it myself. On 8 Sep 2013, we (3 couples from the 'Lion City') were on our way to Waitomo and I told the group that I had a surprise accommodation in store for them for the next two nights.

All my hopes were dashed, when we saw the NO vacancy sign at the driveway to the Inn. However I said, since we were there, there was no harm just having a look and speak to the owners. The drive up to the Inn was steep but fear not. Engage 1st gear and peddle to the metal.....easy does it and you'll be there !

Helen the host, answered to our calls and surprise, surprise..........they had vacancies in all their rooms ! Helen explained that they had not changed the sign yet, as they had a busy weekend the day before.

We were so pleased and blessed. We were given the choice of our 3 rooms, out of the 4 available. My partner and I took the 'Farm Room'. Our friends took the 'Bush Room' & 'Swamp Room' for the 8th & 9th Sep 2013 nights. All the rooms were decorated in different themes and decors........that made it so interesting. We were moving around from room to room admiring what we saw. The views (like a lookout) to the Waitomo town and the surrounding farm were also very beautiful.

We also spoke to 'Bob' ?..........other reviewers called him John ..... the" Honey Man"??.... did we get his name wrong ??? Sorry if we did, but we had a lovely time chatting with Helen and the "Honey Man". They also accorded us the NZ Gold offers.

We quickly settled in and Helen told us where to go (the various caves) and what to see ( Marokopa Falls, the Mangapohue Natural Bridge and so on). Also, Helen recommended us the Huhu Restaurant down the road where they had good food for dinner.

Wi-fi was also provided. The breakfast in the morning was delicious and plentiful. There were so many choices and of course many variety of honey from the "Honey Man"............he's such a sweet man !!!

On the 2nd evening, Helen and "Honey Man" joined us for some drinks and we chatted, exchanged views and laughter filled the room. It was such a fun night. These were very nice people we met on our 23D 22N trip the NZ. We were so blessed.

Thanks Helen & "Honey Man", we will remember you for a long, long time.

Cheers !............from the group from the 'Lion City'.

Had a fantastic night's sleep with Helen and John - what great hosts. We arrived a little early and this was no problem. Helen already had towels and toiletries ready for our caving trip that early. The guest lounge was wonderful with great DVDs and books to entertain. The next morning breakfast was really laid on, an amazing time! My girlfriend even mentioned to Helen it was my birthday so she made me a chocolate muffin! Thanks Helen and John - next time we'll make sure we stay a week!

So much depends on whether you enjoy B&B's - to some it feels like an infringement on someone else's home.
This though is the perfect place for a glow-worm visit to Waitomo - just a few metres away from the centre of Waitomo but on a hill overlooking the town and surrounding hills - a beautiful view and lovely sunsets.
The home is beautifully designed and tastefully built.
As others before have said, a highlight is the breakfast - you won't need lunch after John has fed you. John loves his honey and I have never seen so many variations in my life.
