“Qualmark needs to visit unannounced to reassess its rating”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2014

If the rating of this bed and breakfast was one feather (Qualmark) rather than four, I would believe its rating system.
The room was very comfortable but the upkeep of the home was below par and the breakfast needed some serious attention.

This was our first night in new Zealand. We wicked up a car in Auckland and wended our way south to Redwood lodge. By the time we arrived ( late afternoon) we were exhausted, the combination of a long flight from the US and learning to negotiate right wheel driving had extracted its toll. Julie met us with gracious charm, led us to our room, and gave is good directions to dinner (huhu). The room was perfect, the breakfast sublime, the company awesome.

We left the next morning fully refreshed and most pleased with our first night in a delightful country.

Very comfortable stay with great facilities; we didn't use the hot tub or pool but enjoyed using the sauna and pool table. Honesty drinks fridge was a great idea, breakfast was delicious. Very welcoming family and a lovely stay in this great location.

We enjoyed Julie's hospitality for one night. She was very helpful with recommendations and directions. (Like Hu Hu's restaurant in Waitomo. Superb!) Our king bed was exceptionally comfortable and the room was clean and pleasant. Breakfast around the table was delicious and offered the chance to hear other's travel tips and stories. There are some mosquitos and no window screens, so best shut the windows at night.

The Redwood Lodge is located in the countryside between Otorohanga and Waitomo, and is a big rambling building, deceptively bigger than it looks from the driveway. We arrived in the afternoon after taking in the caves in Waitomo and the Kiwi park in Otorohanga, to Loch barking and Alexis hanging out the kitchen window and waving to us, and learned we were the only guests that night. Julie came up from the barn and pet kennels/cattery, and showed us to our room, the beer/wine fridge (which also took all our perishables for the night), and various amenities including the pool and hot tub, sauna, and lounge with its pool table, TV and games. The latter had seen better days, but the family were working on it and by now it's probably good as new, given the shape of the rest of the renovated lodge. Julie offered to book reservations at a couple of restaurants including the HuHu in Waitomo which we accepted. After dinner we drove back along narrow roads and narrower bridges in the slowly gathering dusk with a soft pink-hued sunset to the west (Hint - it took us 3 days to figure out the bridge give-way signs, the black arrow shows which direction has right of way). We actually slept solidly for 9 hours which speaks to the quiet and the very comfy bed. We asked for the New Zealand breakfast in the morning which consisted of orange juice and choice of mueslis, poached eggs, lots of back bacon (which put our Canadian bacon to shame), potato patties, fried tomatoes, and bodum coffee. Julie's husband Donovan, an engineer by training, sells ironwork and we were told will take orders for the bigger stuff. We visited the barn in the morning to see Alexi's horse, the donkey, and a few sheep, before hitting the road again. A very enjoyable and restful accommodation, and probably the best breakfast of the trip.

Room Tip: We had a big front room opening onto the deck with a huge bathroom attached, and it was probably the...

My husband and I recently stayed at Redwood Lodge for 1 night and wish we had gotten to stay longer. It was a short drive from Waitomo Caves and Otorohanga and very comfortable. We didn't enjoy the gym, spa, pool or sauna but I am sure those are lovely in the warmer months. Our hostess was fantastic and was helpful when we asked for restaurant suggestions for dinner.

Breakfast was fantastic and shouldn't be missed! I had the chocolate chip pancakes and my husband had the eggs benedict. They weren't true 'American' pancakes, more like thick crepes, but they were wonderful nonetheless. This was also our very first time staying at a B&B and we were not disappointed. We highly recommend Redwood Lodge.

After a busy day driving and then enjoying the stunning Waitomo Caves and glow worm experience Redwood lodge was just what we needed. Our host were friendly and very helpful. The kids were invited to interact with the animals and even feed the very thirsty lamb "princess sophie". We would have loved to stay longer and make use of all the facilities in the games room, spa ect but the beds were so comfortable we slept instead. The breakfast choice was huge and the kiwi breakfast the best I had over ten days.
For a family looking to relax and enjoy the aftermath of a busy day touring Redwood lodge was perfect.
