“Gorgeous, tranquil get-away!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2009

Kamahi Cottage is a little touch of paradise. Private and right in the heart of the country we found we were welcomed and made to feel relaxed the minute we arrived. Liz's cooking is amazing and the lamb roast and the delicious breakfasts were great for giving us the energy we needed for the Black Water Rafting we did at the Waitomo Caves which is not far away from Kamahi Cottage. We loved the added touches of the gorgeous shampoo, oils and even the slippers we could use on our stay along with the deck chairs for lounging outside in the sun.
Highly recommend Kamahi Cottage if you are wanting a lovely escape!

We received A+ treatment from our arrival until our departure.
Since we arrived late, we took advantage of Liz's offer to prepare a sumptuous dinner for us. It was so nice to sit back and relax and not have to go searching for a suitable restaurant.
The accommodations were also fantastic! From the comfortable beds to the fresh flowers to the amenities, it was pure luxury. We had a lot of room and enjoyed the privacy. I only regret it was overcast when we were there because we would have loved to have seen more of the landscape.
When we left for the Waitomo Caves, they even gave us extra towels so we wouldn't have to pack our wet ones when we flew out later that day. And their schedule was flexible enough that they allowed us to return to the cottage and get cleaned up before we left for our flight. They really went out of their way to make our stay a pleasurable one and we appreciated that.
We hope to return to Kamahi Cottage in the future and we would highly recommend it to anyone! Randall & Cheryl in NC

Kamahi Cottage was the perfect end to our honeymoon. We had been travelling around Australia and New Zealand for a month and we had stayed at a lot of high end resorts and hotels before we had arrived at Kamahi Cottage. What we found when we got there was nothing short of magical. Elisabeth (the owner) came out to greet us before we even got out of the car and had even booked some of our activities in the area for us before we had arrived. Right from the start we felt welcomed and at home, there was even two pieces of the best banana bread I have ever had waiting for us on the table when we got in. The cottage itself is very clean and inviting with all the amenities one could ask for and the view from the cottage was SPECTACULAR. The garden and the grounds were immaculate and we were allowed to explore freely. There were dvds, cds, board games, cards, books, and magazines if you were looking for indoor entertainment. There was homemade baking everyday and a great selection of wines to choose from. Everything that could make our stay extra special we found in Kamahi Cottage.

When we were in the process of booking the cottage I was a little bit worried after seeing in the pictures that there was a family cat since I'm EXTREMELY allergic to cats. However I happily found out that the cat never goes in the cottage itself and I never once had an allergic response. My husband on the other hand LOVES cats and so was over the moon how friendly and cute the cat was.

The absolute best part about Kamahi Cottage was a tie for us between the food and the extreme kindness of the owners. By far the dinners and breakfasts that we had at Kamahi Cottage were the best we had ever tasted! Not to mention a fantastic deal for the price. By the end of the stay we were completely spoiled by our experience there and wish we could move in. Yep, it was that good. When we left Elisabeth had even printed out the recipes of the food we loved so much (I have yet to see if I can make them half as well as she did).

We definitely can't say enough good things about Kamahi Cottage and if we are ever back in New Zealand we are 100% staying there again.

  • Liked — The food and the kindness of the owners
  • Disliked — that we didn't find it until the end of our trip (we really wished we could have stayed longer)

Graham from Kent in England was taking his youngest daughter on a trip and they really enjoyed their stay in Kamahi Cottage. The beef and sheep farm was set in the rolling hills of the North Island in 1120 acres including meyer lemon, lime and fruit trees, a well stocked garden and wonderful outlook. There was delicious homemade food and homebaking. Melissa aged 11 especially enjoyed the lemon pie. Liz was very helpful with the local knowledge and arranging visits to Waitomo Caves, and the activities at Luge and Zorb at Rotorua. The friendly family atmosphere was most welcoming in our self contained cottage on the farm. Evan took us for a drive around the farm, and we were lucky to see new born lambs, some just 5 minutes old. Our exceptional hosts made our stay memorable even though with the winter season we experienced heavy rain at times. Our rooms were in a vaulted barn, very cosy, with a comfortable queen sized bed. There was free internet access and films readily available. we would love to return and spend more time at Kamahi Cottage

I recently spent one night at Kamahi Cottage and found it to be and excellent choice and will stay there again if I am in the area. The directions were easy to follow and it was only 10-15 minutes from a main highway on all paved roads. The cottage is surrounded by lovely gardens and the host was friendly and gracious, providing a welcoming tour and some nice snacks on my arrival. The simple cottage facilities (small kitchen, TV/DVD/stereo, spacious bathroom with a large strong shower) are well designed, although the stairs up to the loft bedroom might not suit everyone. There is evidence throughout of the owners taste in fine fabrics. I received comprehensive useful information on local restaurants for my evening meal. Breakfast was tasty and nourishing, including possibly the best omelet I have ever eaten. If you want to see New Zealand farming countryside from a great location with knowledgeable and successful hosts, this is a great place to stay. I might be back for the local trout fishing.

We arrived exhausted and jetlagged after a long flight from Canada via Hong Kong. The kids were cranky. Liz greeted us and treated us like family. We didn't ever want to leave! Fabulous baked eggs for breakfast
And make sure you see the angora rabbit shearing near the Waitomo Caves - hysterical!

Kamahi Cottage is a special place. Not only because of the location with the view of rolling hills, sheep and wild turkeys, but also of the hosts, particularly Liz. She is not only an accomplished gourmet cook, but also a most gracious host. If you are in the area to visit the Waitomo Glowworm caves, this is the perfect location to enjoy a bit of countryside and see why the Milky Way is called so. We stayed 2 nights (February 2008) and to say that it was romantic doesn’t start to cover it. The cottage is like a well appointed home, from wool socks and slippers to organic toiletries. It’s only a few hours from Rotorua or Auckland, so it makes it convenient for a wonderful stop. This is one of the most extraordinary B&B we stayed at.
