“Lovely homey place; the farm animals are so fun”
Reviewed 7 June 2013

I love this place -- it has such a nicer vibe than staying in a hotel. The hostess Ann was really friendly, and we had a wonderful time touring the farm with the ostriches and different miniature animals. We stayed in a room in the main house, and I really appreciated the use of the kitchen to make dinner. Breakfast was yummy and family-style -- the ostrich omelette didn't taste much different than a regular omlette but it was nicely prepared and yummy; I recommend trying it. I definitely look forward to coming back!

Stayed here for one night to visit the waitomo caves on the drive down to Wellington. Having read the previous reviews we were looking forward to staying in this b&b but unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. We booked into the "budget option" room for $75 per night (breakfast extra $5) which was basically a small spare room the owners have in their house. It had 3 single beds but barely any space to move around or store luggage. It was also very out dated and cluttered. On the plus side our private bathroom was very clean. The hosts were very friendly and talkative, and the location is a 5-10 min drive to the caves. The added tour around the farm was also a fun and different experience. Overall, I would recommend not staying in the budget option, but perhaps exploring the separate units which might be nicer.

We had a lovely time at Big Bird! We stayed two nights and our 2yr old son loved being able to see the animals any time! He became instant friends with the family dog Pipi! The family are lovely and provide plenty of great recommendations about tours and restraunts etc. They also do a lovely continental breakfast!
The animals are great and there are so many varieties!

I am an animal person. I will pretty much do any animal encounter that I can afford. We needed a place to stay near the Waitomo Caves and when my wife found this place, I was sold.

After a long day of driving, we arrived at the B&B very late...around 10:30pm. The owner Ann was very nice about it (we called in ahead of time that we were going to be late) and greeted us when we arrived. We stayed at the chalet which is a little private house next to the main B&B house. It was comfortable in size and had a bedroom, private bathroom, kitchenette (which we didnʻt get to utilize really), fridge, and living room. Really, a pretty nice get up. When you looked out the window there was a llama and emu enclosure. Pretty cool. We were also able to park right up to our door.

The breakfast was pretty good and you had the option of getting an ostrich omlette for $2.50 which we had to try. It was okay and basically tasted like a denser egg. But try it to experience it!

Then Ann gave us a tour around the grounds. There is a kunekune pig, mini goats, sheep, cow, horses, donkeys, llamas, and emus, ostriches, guinea pigs, a dog, and a cat. And you donʻt just walk around the pens. You go in them. Ann let us touch all the animals and even feed some of them. I know that some petting zoos have goats, sheep, cows, etc, but there was something special about these animals besides the fact that they are all mini. Ann seemed to genuinely care about each and every animal there. THEN, along comes an ostrich. I have a personal thing against giant birds. I once almost got attacked by a rhea and once I saw a kid almost get attacked by an emu before I pushed the kid away. After some initial hesitance, I found out this ostrich was really cool. She allowed us to pet her (which was really interesting) and she just followed us around the pen not bothering anyone. It was really cool. And after that, we got to walk among the emus too though are nowhere near as loving and "safe" as Victoria the ostrich.

But my one true love at this farm was Pippi the dog. She was SO sweet and I just wanted to take her home. She followed me around the night before, and in the morning, and on the tour.

I really liked this place; the stay and the experience. Iʻd definitely do it again if Iʻm ever in the area.

Room Tip: I really liked the chalet. Nice private space and you are right up next to the pens.

We stayed there in December 2011....

OK - so here's the deal: If you have children, you will love this place!
If you are looking for a upper-end stay, keep looking.

The house itself is somewhat run down, faded carpets, dusty in places, old furniture. We booked it last minute, and so were given a family room in the main house for the price of a smaller room - which was very nice. Price was extremely reasonable, and breakfast was great and felt like being with family.

The Highlight was our host and the animals! Anne is simply amazing: lively, active and very welcoming. You can see that she loves her farm and loves children. Our daughter loved staying there, feeding the Guinea pigs, riding one of the donkeys, and petting the ostriches. We were allowed to join Anne and her niece in their private living room, watching TV, playing with the kittens and some of her niece's toys.

All in all a great experience, and we would certainly love to stay there again when visiting Waitomo.

Anne and her family was very nice and very warm with us it was a pleasure. She baby sit our kid because we wanted to visit waitimo caves. He loved her! The house is clean but a happy miss is everywhere. And for kids you can visit the farm with miniature animal and big birds. You can the most little bull in the world! Very funny. We recommend this place if you have kids and if you are not a maniac.

Stayed in November in the self-contained chalet- couple with a 3-year old.Travelled from Taupo, stopped at Te Kuiti to get provisions for dinner, had booked a Spellbound Glowworm tour for 10 am the next day.The acomodation is a little run down, faded carpets, heating not sufficient other than in the bedroom, not enough space for putting the luggage, separate hot and cold water taps in bathroom-all in all, definitely not a fancy place. Then why the 4 stars? The setting is fantastic with great views and farmland all around. The bed was comfy and we had a great night's sleep, the kitchen was more than adequate and the fridge well-stocked (milk, bread and lots of spreads),breakfast was delivered to the cottage, the ostrich egg omelette was good (not unmissable though),the hostess was lovely and very friendly, but most of all,my son totally enjoyed the animals in the farm, the one place in the trip he still remembers,3 months on.The mini-pony ride, petting the ostrich Victoria, feeding the guinea pigs, sheep and pigs, seeing Llamas, alpacas, emus with babies etc etc. So,at the reasonable rates charged, it was more than ok for a 1-night stay.

Thank you for your review. Nice to have you and your family stay. We are finding many families are making return visits - especially for the "memorable moments" the children enjoy with the animals - a unique experience unlike the normal farmparks.
Yes, the upgrade is organised, the painter is booked and the new carpet is here and will be laid in a couple of weeks.
We have recently installed new underfloor insulation and 2 oil heaters and 1 fan heater are supplied.
Cheers Ann & Ross
