As a 'kiwi' who had never actually seen a kiwi, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience watching our native bird. Inside the kiwi house there is enough light that you can clearly see the kiwi in action. We had a fantastic view of the great spotted kiwi 'atu' who was very active searching for food, as well as the smaller kiwi who was asleep right near the window. At 1pm feeding time one of the staff went into the enclosure and it was amazing to see the big kiwi rub up against her, and to (enviously) watch her stroke him. This is the only place in NZ where you are guaranteed to see a kiwi, so if that is high on your list, then this is the place for you.

The rest of the park is quite old and seems quite run down, but I suppose there is only so much $$ to go around. nice for a stroll anyway, and to check out some lizards and other native NZ birds.

Staff are friendly. Gift shop/souvenir shop on site. Bring a picnic lunch. If you have already planned a visit to Waitomo caves in the morning, it would be good to tack this on afterwards.

Nice little set up just off the main road through the town. Friendly staff, an attractive park and a very well set up kiwi facility. Just a shame that inconsiderate photographers who won't follow the rules have meant there is no photography in the kiwi unit.

We hadn't planned on going to the Kiwi House but were given a voucher for a discounted price by the Waitomo tour operator we had been at that morning so decided to take the time to visit. Overall the place is a bit tired looking but the staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Didnt see the kiwi but as we are NZ'ers we have seen them before! Was a nice walk around the park area.

As we were not able to visit anywhere at night to see kiwis in action, we were so pleased to see active kiwis up nice and close during the day. They were snuffling around right near the glass and so we were able to observe them closely for a time. There are no photos allowed, though, because of the flash. We were also lucky enough to arrive at feeding time for the keas and kakas (11am). The keeper was very friendly and informative and I would recommend timing your visit to feeding times. Opposite the Kiwi House there is a lovely little park with bbq's, where we could sit to have our picnic lunch before continuing on our travels. It's not too badly priced, but we managed to find an online voucher that gave us 50% off the entrance fee.

My goal in NZ was to see a kiwi and I missed them at the zoo so was delighted that they came right up to the front of their enclosure and snuffled around, seemingly just for us. It was delightful. We went back at the end and they were much shyer, hovering at the back so were were lucky. I loved wandering around and looking at all the other birdlife, especially the accosting by a cheeky plover and learning all about N'Zs birdlife. Recommended,
