This " highest hotel in NZ" is in just in the Tongariro national park so ideal is you are going to do the Tongariro Alpine crossing. The building is a ski lodge style with half hotel rooms ensuite and half backpacker style rooms with 3 bunks and shared bathroom facilities.
It's clean modern ,comfortable ski chalet style accommodation with helpful staff and useful additions like on site laundry and spa pool and sauna ( but check opening hours , as I missed out just when bones weary from the Tongariro hike needed a soak )
Food was really good, but again watch opining hours as restaurant closed at 8 for dinner and 9am for breakfast the following morning ......and you don't have many other options in the village if you miss meals here, though backpackers can cook in their own kitchen.

Room Tip: Backpackers rooms were clean, comfy and well priced

We chanced upon Piper's Lodge a few nights before Christmas after a long and pleasant drive up the Wanganui River Road. We were made very welcome by Bruce. The free WIFI was an immediate success with our teenage daughter. Amazingly the local pub presented me with a complete Gluten Free menu for dinner that night - totally unexpectedly, and very welcome.

The most friendly and helpful group of staff you could ever ask for!
Well run, efficient with lots to do and lovely people to help you whenever you need it. The food was delicious and they are super flexible in everything they do!
100% loved my stay!

Room Tip: Rooms outside got a little cold at night, but inside was lovely and warm!

We stayed here for 4 nights whilst my partner was doing some skiing. Super friendly hosts Bruce and Denise, cant do enough to help you and accomodate you. They found us a horse riding company so we could do some trekking one day and even dropped us off as we didnt have a car to get there. Great range of ski stuff to hire and roaring fire every day in the lounge with a selection of books and games to use.

Room Tip: Some of the ensuite rooms have a patio door with shared decking.
