“Nice lodging, but uptight staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2014

The lodge was nice and comfortable but the staff was weird. We went to check in and the lady was on the phone having a personal conversation for 5 minutes! Great location for checking out the National Park but didn't feel comfortable around staff. We just wanted to relax and enjoy our stay. Seemed like they were nosy about everything. Too bad because we liked the lodging but not the staff. We will not be going back.

Thank you for your positive feedback on the accommodation here at Adventure Lodge, I am sorry about the "uptight" reception you received the day you checked in, the family had just learnt of the death of a good friend and needed to make arrangements for staff to cover over this time.

The Adventure Lodge & Motel gave us a wonderful experience. The accommodation was great, food lovely & the Spa Pool an added bonus. We were greeted warmly & explained what our itinerary was as it can vary due to the weather conditions. So well organsied but you didn't feel bullied.I would definitely stay there again next time we plan a trip to the area. I thought the pricing was very good - I don't know how they make any money!

Thank You Penelope for your feedback, we first introduced the Tongariro Crossing Freedom Package for over 12 years ago and it is nice to know our guests receive the same value when we first started with clean accommodation, good food and service. We look forward to seeing you back again.

The freedom package is excellent value: the accommodation is not flashy, but is comfortable. The food is delicious, and good quality. The owners Lorraine and Ron are welcoming and helpful. Can't recommend this highly enough as a great weekend away for NZers (and a great experience for visitors).

We stayed two nights with the Freedom Package. This was excellent value - clean & comfortable room, great breakfast, a really nice packed lunch for the Tongariro Crossing & dinner at the end. We were also dropped off & picked up by the track as part of the deal. Ron & Lorraine were so helpful & friendly....great Kiwi hospitality.

Thank you jobyscoby for your feedback on our Tongariro Freedom Package, our overseas guests really enjoy the weekends with all the kiwis coming to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Many New Zealanders do not realise how popular this hike is until they are on the crossing and hear the different languages from around the world.

We stayed here d used the motel's shuttle the next morning to walk to Tongariro crossing. Owners were super friendly, even tho we arrived on the late side, and gave us useful information and many tips for our hike. They seems to honestly care about our safety and even came early to pick us up because the weather was poor! The owner/driver went out of his way to tell us the history of the area. Room was clean and spacious, breakfast was adequate. Several fun bars just down the road where we watched the Olympics the night before.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed equally nice

We were here for 2 nights, with a view to walking the Tongariro crossing on my 60th birthday. Unfortunately the weather had other plans - driving rain and gale force winds most of the day. So we were forced to stay in our unit all morning. But it was comfortable and well furnished. Sky TV meant we could watch England lose to Australia in the Ashes Tests. It also gave me an opportunity to do the laundry. Breakfast was good - full cooked or continental available. Bed was comfortable. No complaints at all. What made it for us was getting a birthday present the next morning when we were due to leave. That was a lovely thought, so thank you Ron and Lorraine. We hope to be back in a few years time and this time we'll stay for more than 2 nights so the weather better behave.

We had booked into the Lodge in order to do the Crossing and took advantage of the 2 night package which seemed reasonable value when we booked. Unfortunately we got some bad weather and weren't able to do the crossing and Lorraine was very good about outlining our options and what we could do instead. The only issue was that we were given conflicting weather information at the Lodge and from the Tourist Information in Whakapapa (the information centre told us there was no chance of doing the crossing on our second day, while there was a suggestion that the weather would improve from the Lodge). However, Lorraine was very good and let us pack up and not be charged for the second night or the walk package.

The facilities were fairly basic. We couldn't get a double room for the first night we were there so ended up in a twin room with the beds at opposite ends of the room (fine for friends, not so good for a married couple!). The showers were hot and the breakfast was good enough. Worth it if you are walking the crossing for convenience.

Room Tip: Book as far in advance as you can. Have a contingency plan in case of bad weather!
