Last year we dined here and the evening wasn't a great success, however I read some recently written good reviews of the Duke and decided to give the Pub another chance. Although the place is a little hard to find it's well worth the effort to get there. There is plenty of parking, both on the road outside and in the two parking lots adjacent to the Pub. It was a beautiful night, so we decided to arrive early and have a drink outside, enjoy the view and watch the sky slowly darkening. The outdoors is not level so fair warning to anyone planning on wearing heels, there are cobbles and quite a bit of up and down in the garden but that's just what gives it charm, as each little garden is almost secluded from the other. Soon after we'd sat down outside, we were given our menus to peruse for the evening's dinner and then a little later they brought us inside for our meal (we'd chosen to sit inside thinking that it might be cold out, but as it turned out the warmth remained all evening). We had originally chosen to sit in the old part of the Pub as we had visitors from overseas with us and liked the charm of the old part, but found the bench seating there rather uncomfortable, so asked to move to the "modern" part of the pub around the back. We had a choice of every table as all the other guests had chosen to sit outside.
First came a complimentary amuse bouche of cauliflower soup in a small glass along with some bread rolls, of which there was a selection of three to choose from. For the starter/appetiser I chose the pork pancakes/wraps, a bit like Peking Duck and they were delicious. Then came my main of plaice which was a little fiddly to eat but worth the effort. We then chose to go outside onto the deck to enjoy the warmth and have our coffees which was a perfect way to end our evening.
What made the evening so enjoyable was not only the setting (high up overlooking a valley) and the food but also the great service provided by all the staff who were friendly, efficient and very helpful and accommodating of our wishes to keep moving seating areas! I would most certainly recommend going there to anyone and we'll certainly be returning.

Fantastic garden, lovely old pub in beautiful English countryside, excellent food, good beer and wine. Sat in the garden on a lovely summers day what more could you want. Friendly service, everything made for a great lunch.

The Duke of Cumberland is a beautiful pub in a lovely setting, with views over distant hills. The garden, with several tasteful ponds, is wonderful in good weather. The food is of very high quality.

This a wonderful old English Pub situated in outstanding gardens with great views. The dishes were well presented and delicious. Staff were considerate and attentive, although a bit forgetful at times! Having said this, the overall experience was very good and I will definitely return again. It is worth arriving early to enjoy aperitifs in the garden.
