The warm welcome by Corné and Hennie, the peace and quiet, the babbling brook, the majestic mountains - with just a glimpse of snow at the top - all made for a wonderful and memorable long weekend away from it all. Picking and eating our own gooseberries and seeing a full Milky Way again probably further contributed to the magic. Fig Tree Cottage has a huge fig tree in front of the stoep. In winter it is a spectacular white sculptural form: in summer it must be a cool green hide. The gardens are lovely. There are fresh posies with lavender in every room, a bunch of fresh herbs and a bowl of lemons on the kitchen table. Sitting in front of a roaring fire, sipping a glass of excellent red, no TV, no mobile phone: heavenly!
