John Montagu Guest House
Ranked #18 of 27 Montagu B&B and Inns
Reviewed 18 November 2007

We had only one night (sadly) at the Montagu Inn. The hotel is a delightful eclectic mix of styles of rooms and small buildings. We thought it was the nicest hotel we had stayed in in South Africa. It is very homely with friendly staff. The evening meal was absolutely splendid with staff who were a delight! The breakfast was brilliant. They offer continental breakfast, fruit, yoghurt etc; but don't stuff yourself too soon as the waiter/ess will come to you to your table to take your order for a full english cooked breakfast. It was the only hotel where I could drink the breakfast coffee. (I'm picky). It's the largest hotel in Montagu, which is a very small town....nothing to do there but stay overnight. I would certainly recommend this hotel.

Montagu is one of South Africa's special places. A spectacular drive brings you to this charming little town ringed by mountains. Bathe in
the hot springs by day or night as dassies (hyraxes) scamper across the mountainside above you. Stay at the John Montagu and you'll be pampered through and through. Rooms are nicely appointed, beds are comfy and breakfasts are consistently good - don't pass up the cheese
muffins. Owner Sherry Taignton will advise on things to see and do, like the tractor ride up the mountainside or the excellent river trip, and she'll also book you into the restaurant of your choice. We've stayed at this fine B&B on numerous occasions and have never been disappointed.

Having previously stayed at The John Montagu Victorian Guesthouse three years ago, we just turned up in Montagu without booking ahead and were disappointed to see the "full" sign up. We decided to ask the owner Sherry if she could recommend somewhere else but as luck would have it she squeezed us in. It's a beautiful Victorian house with a pool in the back garden and a bar area with thatched roof with a fridge which Sherry stocks up every evening with cold beer and wine so when guests come back from one of the restaurants which Sherry has recommended and booked for you e.g. Jessica's, there is a nice cold drink waiting.

In the morning a nice freshly cooked breakfast awaits and all for a very reasonable price which hasn't gone up since the last time we went.

When we moved on to Franschhoek my husband discovered he had left his expensive headphones behind at Montagu (on the last day of our holiday). I phoned Sherry and could not believe her kindness when she said she'd bring them to Franschhoek which is nearly a two hour drive away. I think that goes beyond the role of guest room hostess and we were very grateful.

Highly recommended.
