Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La
Ranked #5 of 10 Hotels in Batu Ferringhi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 June 2014

I have recently returned from an amazing holiday to Malaysia and Singapore, starting wtih 5 nights at the Golden Sands in Penang in order to get a bit of tan and relax before visiting Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The hotel was recommended by friends who stayed several times and the price offered by our UK tour operator was very good. The location is great right on the beach, unfortunately swimming in the sea is not an amazing experience as the water is not that clean and the area where you can swim is netted due to jelly fish. We were given sea facing rooms due to my husbands 50th birthday and the rooms are very spacious with great views. Really clean and the turn down service is very efficient. Our minibar was stocked with water daily and we received at least 2 bottles each which was great, the bathrooms are modern with lovely marble showers and two sinks. Breakfast was lovely with cooking stations where they prepare egg dishes, noodles and other local specialties while you are waiting, there is a good selection of fruits, cereals as well as an international buffet for the less daring.
What disappointed us was the prices for the drinks in the hotel, absolutely outrageous for the standard as well as the service. By the sunbeds you are supposed to lift a metal flag in order to be seen and served, well you can wait up to half an hour for somebody to come and take your orders. A large beer costs £10 which is more than in London and that is a lot of money for the local standard. The happy hour is very confusing for the guests as well as the waiter as they serve the second drink at a 40% discount plus 10% resort tax plus 6% service tax or the other way round so you are not saving much, if you query they get muddled up and might charge you even more.... Cocktails are not made according to an international recipe, for example a Cosmopolitan would be just vodka cranberry juice and ice served in a water tumbler, for a hotel managed by Shangri La and the costs they charged that was pretty poor...as you can imagine not many guests drink in the hotel which is a shame, the hotel is missing a trick as they are so relaxed about guests buying soft and alcoholic drinks from the shop across the road and drinking on their sunbeds. We did not eat in the hotel after breakfast as there did not seem to be much of an atmosphere especially in the evenings so preferred to eat in the Long Cafe market as well as visit the Bora Bora Beach bar. . Enjoyed a trip to the Penang Hill as well as the Kek Loh Si Temple, picked up a driver from outside the hotel in a decent car and worked out at half the cost, again the costs for the trips charged by the hotel are a bit high....Our driver was called Vincent, he spoke impecable English and was very knowledgeable, his service was really good and he recommended us what to do and was happy to wait for us. Our husbands played golf one day and again so more convenient to book directly with the golf course and take a taxi from outside the hotel, rather than go through hotel costs. I appreciate everybody has to earn and you pay for the service but the difference is quite high.
All in all Penang was a good experience, think we have been spoiled with the Caribbean but it was a good value for money holiday as long as you don't pay hotel prices.

Room Tip: Definitely seafacing or seaview, both towards the sea but sea view are higher floors.

Dear ChocolateMartini,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of the Golden Sands Resort. We certainly appreciate your comments as you are well travelled and your feedback is indeed valuable to us.

We are working together with the local authorities to monitor the jellyfish population so as to ensure a more balanced ecology. With our cooperation with the local marine experts, we hope that this situation will improve in the near future.

We are pleased that you found our food and beverage quality to your expectations. However, we are concerned that the drink prices were not as attractive as we hoped they would be and that the service and the cocktail standards are not at par with international standards. We will certainly address this with our Director of Food and Beverage so that the necessary improvements are made.

We will certainly also look into ways of working with our transportation provider to ensure that our prices remain attractive.

Thanks once again for giving us your feedback from a season traveller's point of view. All that being said, we look forward to more visits from you in the near future.

Warmest regards,

Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman

Dear Nowees,

Thank you for your candid review of our resort. We are quite full during the school holidays and it can seem quite crowded when there are guests and families in the resort at the same time.

Our Garden Café is al fresco and in the heat, it can be quite warm. However, our staff can assist by turning up the speed of the ceiling fans and by placing insect repellent at strategic areas.

We have taken note of your feedback regarding Adventure Zone and we will ensure that there is proper staffing in future. Your comments with regards to the room and bathtub are also well noted.

We will take your feedback into consideration for our future plans. On that note, we look forward to seeing you and your family again in the near future.

I choose to stay at the hotel mainly for my kids.

i) I registered 2 kids (3 & 5 yrs) upon booking, + 1 additional bed. No additional charge for the extra bed and breakfast. (however, they didn't put the extra bed in my room and we finally think we do not need it)
ii) There are several pools at the hotel: 1.2m pool, 3m pool, pool with water slide, whirpool and a baby pool. Kids can enjoy the whirpool if with an adult.
iii) Full day activites at Kids club, from 10am-9pm. Lunch and dinner can be served. This is really interesting but this is only opened for kids above 5.
iv) Adventure zone is really a fun place for kids, by paying just MYR23 per pax. It will be great if the hotel guest can enjoy the facilities for free or cheaper but that day I found that the walk-in guest also enjoy the same rate. Well, not bad maybe I can bring my kids to the place again without staying at the hotel.
v) Hotel is near to the beach, kids can build sand castle there. Remember to bring your own toy!
vi) In case you do not bring your toys, there are several local shops outside the hotel and you can easily get one.
vii) McD is just opposite the hotel, about 200m. It is operating 24 hrs!

Room Tip: Seaview is good. Not bad if you are having a room with Hillview but try to avoid the mosque if possi...

Book 2 rooms, one room not ready upon check in. 4 adults and 1 toddler were asked to wait in one of the rooms which is terrible because the room does not fit 4 pax with a running kid! The pools and adventure zone are really kids friendly, the beach is ok with lots of adults activities. The bathroom smell like some termites are eating the hotel away... The quilt has holes. The breakfast buffet is ok, dinner buffet is not up to Shang's reputation. All seafacing rooms have balcony.

The hotel location is smack right in the centre of Batu Ferringhi beach. It is not a private beach, which is good if you are looking for competitive rates in terms of water sports and massages. The room facing the beach is the highlight. Breakfast is very comprehensive but can get quite noisy and crowded during busy times. Parking is very limited unfortunately. I will certainly return back to this hotel.
