I think this was my fourth or fifth stay at Holiday Inn Penang and was pleased to see some investment in terms of refurbishment of the hotel and whilst not a major upgrade it was well done. Would love to give this place 5 stars but the poolside, beach let it down, first they ran out of towels and it was almost impossible to get a sunbed because people blocked the beds by placing towels on them and then going off for hours hotel need to take control of this.Hotel has a policy of no outside food at pool area which is fair enough but dont run out of Ice lollies etc. The food is still very poor and with fantastic food a few steps away dont be put off by this.
the hotrel definetly has location location

Upon arriving at 1130, a room was made available within a 1/2 hour. As requested, a room on a high floor with a balcony overlooking the beach to the west was made available. Great for the sunsets. The refurbishment has resulted in a brighter room with a large flat screen TV. The bathroom was the same as previous visits with a separate shower and bath.

Breakfast was very busy around the weekends with them running out of of my favourites, papaya and vegemite (not eaten together, :j ), on one occasion. The freshly cooked roti's which sometimes were the Telur variety were excellent.

The pool was busy in the shallow end with the Malaysian school holidays, but was not crowded in the deep end. Whilst we were in the pool we were visited twice by a family of dusky leaf monkeys - spectacled langurs. They ranged from a babe in arms, young, "teenagers" and mum and the greying dad. The "teenagers put on a great show climbing up a tree beside the pool and then perfecting their ability to fall down the tree from branch to branch. The next visit they jumped from tree to tree along the front of the pool and then up the side of the hotel and back into the jungle. What a sight and all for free.

Another change has been the introduction of the Australian Network TV programs available now at the Hotel. Great for keeping up to date with home and OZ sport telecasts.

Room Tip: To escape and street noise I choose the highest floor available in the Tower Block. The western side...

We stayed at the Holiday Inn for one night and were so disappointed in the hotel that we checked out. There wasn't anything really wrong with it, but there certainly wasn't anything right either. Our sea view room in the Beach Tower did indeed have a nice sea view, but no balcony from which to enjoy it. The room needed renovating/updating, especially the bathroom, which was old and tired. On the plus side, the bed was comfortable. I inquired about moving to the more recently renovated Ferringhi Tower, across the street from the beach and connected to the Beach Tower by a pedestrian skybridge, but the room I toured had a strong musty smell and no view. The hotel charges extra for in-room wifi. Breakfast was not included in my rate. The reception desk was staffed by a single person so every request for assistance required a short wait. The pool is a simple large rectangle. Here's an example of the aura of neglect that surrounds the hotel. At the edge of the property is a large water vessel for guests to wash the sand off their feet upon returning from the beach. A battered sign explains that it is a traditional Malaysian washing station and that guests should dip the coconut ladle into the vessel and pour water on their feet. But in place of a coconut ladle, there is a yellow, plastic toy cup. The water flowing into the vessel is overflowing down the hill onto the beach and cascading over an abandoned flip-flop caught in the foliage. We checked out and moved to another hotel down the road where, for the same rate, we got a sea view room with a balcony, breakfast, free wifi in our room, friendly and attentive service, and a fabulous free-form pool with water slides and other activities to keep the kids entertained all day. The rest of our vacation was fabulous. As I see it, the only advantage of the Holiday Inn is that it is one of the rare hotel chains in Asia that offers rooms with two double beds, which allows families with kids to share one room. But in the case of the Holiday Inn Penang, that is not enough to earn our repeat business.

Well let me just make it clear it is a good hotel and not a 5 star. The rooms are nice and clean, the location is beautiful and it has everything else a hotel should have but yes they don't provide or boast of 5 star services. Everything in the hotel is available but it comes at a price. As mentioned in few other reviews the hotel has two buildings which are connected by a overhead bridge (it's a 2 min walk). Will suggest to stay at beach wing as it has better views and the room has been refurbished. The hotel is at a good location in terms of night market and other shops like massage parlors (also is just 10 min away from Hard Rock hotel). The breakfast is not bad but nothing to go crazy for, the in-house restaurant serve both Indian and American/Italian food ( but the price is a bit expensive).

There are some Lebanese/ American and Indian restaurant within 2 min walk from the hotel, providing more economical options.

The gym is in the other wing and is pretty small but who wants to go crazy during a beach vacation. The beach is neat and clean but full of people who wants to sell all kind of sea sporting activities which can be really annoying.

Remember being an economical and beach view hotel it is usually crowded so don't expect a peaceful quiet time here, but if u are with kids it can be helpful as they have a gaming room, table tennis tables, pool table etc to keep them busy ( but again they charge u to use these facilities)

Staff is courteous and helpful but is overworked due to the number of people staying here at any given time

It takes around 40 min to reach airport and the taxis can be booked from the shops opposite the hotel ( much cheaper than the option provided by the hotel)

In summary, yes if I am looking for a good (not luxurious and exclusive) time I will stay here again.

My wife , myself, and our friends all stayed here for a week in December 2011, and had a great time !
After catching a bus fro Penang airport , costing 4rm each , and a 1hr 45 min drive through Penang the driver dropped us right outside the hotel .
Each side , the beach wing and tower has it`s own reception and check in , which was easy , and in minutes we were unloading our bags in the 19 th floor of the tower.
The rooms are clean , spacious , and tidy , and our friends even had a balcony , so if you want one book early.
The breakfast is excellent , a full buffet , fresh fruit , cakes, hot food etc , though there are plenty of places to eat nearby , along with shops , massage halls and street vendors.
At night the road outside comes alive with the famous market !!
The pool is clean , lifeguards are present , with towels provided , and a good bar and snacks.
The nearby beach caters for jet skiing , and parascending and even a few swimmers.
There is a bus top outside , or the very polte and helpful staff will easily fix you up with a taxi.
We had a really enjoyable stay at the Holiday Inn , with very nice , polite , and helpful staff , nothing is too much trouble. My room upgrade was done online before we left , and went without a hitch, Thank you all,We will return here.

Room Tip: Book early for a Tower balcony.

The hotel is fairly nice and located where all high end hotels are placed. It has a “Beach Tower” which has higher rates only because of the sea view. The other building is “Ferringhi Tower” which is towards the back but I wouldn’t recommend spending extra money for the Beach Tower unless someone is really enthusiastic about the view which is the only thing that one gets there.

The hotel has its own beach which is the biggest convenience and was the main reason for me to take it. The towels in the morning are provided from 8am onwards. The pools can be busy after 9:30 am and the beach also gets busy but one can still enjoy. The jetski costs RM 65 for 15 minutes and para sailing even higher. The beach is fairly clean and kids enjoy the time spent there. There are several restaurants stone throw away from the hotel and I wouldn’t recommend eating in the hotel as particularly the room services takes forever (more than an hour in our case) with average food. The shops around the hotel have all kinds of stuff but one ‘must’ haggle and bargain.

Room Tip: Rooms in Ferringhi Tower are fine and cheaper than Beach Wing
