“Beautiful boutique hotel”
Reviewed 28 May 2014 via mobile

The hotel locates in the best beach area of Batu Ferringhi of Penang. It takes around one hour by taxi from the airport.

My stay was very pleasant and relaxing! All staffs there were very helpful, especially Sue from the reception, thank you!

If you are foodies like myself, than you would love the location of this hotel, there are food courts along the road once you've come out the hotel. If you are visiting George Town, it just take around 30 mins by taxi.

The only disappointing thing was about the bar. The drinks there weren't worth the money I paid for.

The Lone Pine is a touch of colonial bliss in a tourist hotspot. The hotel is lovely with great facilities but the location isn't the best (over the road from a petrol station, road front shops and stalls) and the beach is disappointing. Lots of motorsports available (Jet skis and paragliding) so the beach smells of diesel and a small area ring fenced for swimming, plus my 6yr old got stung by a jellyfish so not the best family beach. The hotel swimming pool is however lovely and the perfect place to chill. The hotel also offered a free transfer into GeorgeTown which is fabulous and the perfect place to explore. Absolutely LOVE Penang and the Lone Pine but sadly not enamoured with Batu Ferrenghi.

Room Tip: We chose a room with an extra day lounge so we could out the kids to bed and have somewhere to sit a...

Love the room and decor! Room layout n colours are a mix of beach holiday + retro chill theme and they are so well appointed with an outdoor bathtub, large balcony space, ceiling fan, aircond, beach slippers, sarongs and other beach essentials.
My favourite area in the hotel is the pool area.. totally inviting with more than enough deck chairs to sun bathe. The pool also front a wide beach front but is slightly hidden by a row of low shrubs.
Breakfast spread could be improved tho... other than that, everything else was great!

Room Tip: even the most basic / standard rooms are great! 1st floor onwards have views of the sea.

The hotel is located beside Rasa Sayang hotel, with great seaview and garden view. The garden view is most probably the most beautiful you can get in Penang, with big oak trees and lawns. However the service is the worst I have ever experienced. Not to mention the attitude of the hotel staffs, they were also responding slowly towards the request of hotel guests and were indifferent as well. Food was okay.

Nice overall property. Check in was good and the welcome drink and cold towel are always appreciated.

Pros:

1.Small property compared to the other larger resorts, so not too crowded

2. Nice rooms

3. Rental of DVD's and you can borrow books. Also have Carrom.

4. Nice pool

Cons:

1. Pool: There was a group of young local couples, about 10 people. One of the guys put one of his shoes in the pool and washed it out and then the other. The next day another guy from this same group was repeatedly spitting in the pool. Now this is not the resorts fault but the pool attendants need to keep an eye on such things and restrain such unhygienic behavior.

2. Front Desk: My wife returned a dvd we had borrowed. On check out we were asked for the dvd. On telling them it was returned, they questioned our integrity. Who did we return it to and when. It was their fault they did not follow the right procedure and take off the note. They went back & forth trying to find the dvd and finally it was located.

We requested a late check out. Were told to check with the Duty Manager. Why could not the lady check with the duty manager for us. The late check out was appreciated but the same duty manager was unprofessional, watching us being grilled about the dvd.

The room was lovely just as photographed. It was great that we were able to check in at 1pm earlier that the official check in time and also offered a late check out till 2pm. Some reviewers had problem with their aircon, we did not. Our only problem was that we did not realise that we had not had the aircon switched on, till many hours later. Rather silly but I suppose it attested to the fact that the fan was effective despite the 30+degree weather outside.

There was a nice spread for breakfast. The al fresco setting was really lovely and it was most unfortunate that we were so bothered by the files swarming around our food that we have to request to relocate to within the bungalow itself. Since no ready help came when we requested for the relocation, we had to do it ourselves before the servers lethargically came to assist.

The service was rather wanting. When returning from breakfast at 10.30am, we found the reception/front desk unstaffed. Instead four staff were congregated at the concierge table near the lift chatting away. When I called the front desk to ask for a reservation be made for the English High Tea at sister hotel, Eastern & Oriental Hotel, I was told to “dail 9” to make the reservation myself. I was not given the number to call and had to look it up myself. When I called Eastern & Oriental Hotel myself to make the reservation, the staff thought I was a Lone Pine staff (from caller ID) calling on behalf of the hotel guest…Disappointing, for the price paid, I had higher expectations.

Fantastic place, albeit on the pricey side. Highlights for me:
- beautiful and modern room with a view of the ocean and personal terrace/tub overlooking the ocean
- really, really good char kway teow for breakfast
- there are lots of nice pools in many nice hotels, but I seemed to enjoy this one more than others. Perhaps it was the pine trees in the background.
- you're a very short walk from other worthwhile and useful attractions, including a big hawker center and tons of cheap massage places
