“Perfect wedding and honeymoon”
Reviewed 21 August 2007

My husband and I stayed at Hamanasi at the end of July 2007. We not only stayed here, but also had our wedding and honeymoon and it was perfect. We stayed in the treehouse....wow. The resort exceded even our highest expectations. The staff was extremely friendly. They had the wedding set up on the beach and it was beautiful. The staff set up all of our activities for us. We went cave tubing and ziplining one day and the mayflower waterfall hike another. The activities were everything we expected and more. The activities were sometimes a long drive to get to, but it didn't matter because the drivers for the resort knew everything about the area and pointed out interesting things the whole drive....it was a beautiful drive and beautiful scenery in general. The room was great. We had stayed in a resort on Ambergris Caye the week before and that was ok, but Hamanasi was...WOW. Very Nice. The food was great. Every night we came back from dinner, our room had been cleaned up and we had fresh flowers on the bed.
I wouldn't hesitate to suggest Hamanasi to anyone. If you want a nice laid back experience...I HIGHLY suggest Hamanasi.

Hamanasi was a wonderful place to stay. It was very beautiful and very clean. The staff is wonderful and more than willing to help with anything you need. The food was great and changed every day. There are lots of things to do from scuba diving to jungle hikes, truly a trip for the whole family or just a get away from your normal life for a while. I would recomend this spot to anyone and hope to revisit sometime in the future.

My husband and I traveled to Hamanasi to celebrate his 4oth birthday. What a perfect spot! Hamanasi has mastered the art of understated elegance. Everything from the grounds and rooms to the food and service. Everything was absolutely gorgeous, yet so laid back, friendly and comfortable.
Hamanasi is a small, quiet resort with the most friendly staff we've encountered. No matter what area they worked in, the staff made an effort to learn our names, and then use them! Whether we were eating breakfast, out diving, having a drink at the bar, or just walking through, there was always a smiling face to greet us and ask how we were doing. We sincerely felt we had Belizean friends by the time we left.
We stayed in one of the beautiful treehouses, and couldn't believe the privacy - we had our own path through the jungle which made every walk back feel like an adventure.
We did a reef/jungle package which included 3 meals each day. The food was amazing. Breakfast was continental, and for Lunch and Dinner you ordered off a menu. We found the dishes to be interesting, flavorful and completely filling. There was a carrot- ginger soup one night that blew us away.
With our package we went diving almost every day, and to the Mayan ruins one day. The diving was incredibly convenient - all we had to do was walk straight out from breakfast to the dock where the boats were waiting. We saw tons of eagle rays, turtles, eels, lobster and great healthy reefs. The dive masters were fun, informed, and felt very safe. We can't wait to plan a trip back when the whale sharks are around!
Our inland adventure to the ruins was another great day. The van was comfortable with a great guide giving us information along the way. When we got there, there was a 2nd guide that knew all about the ruins and was very informative. A fun thing about the resort being so small, you also get to know the other guests. You see them at the resort, and then get to know them on all of the different adventures - we met very fun, interesting people from all over the world.
We were a little nervous about it being the rainy season, but it was lovely. We had some heavy rain at night, but beautiful sunny weather during the day. A nice breeze made the temperature perfect.
Hamanasi felt like the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The excursions typically took place in the morning, and we would come back, have lunch and then lounge with books on the beach or by the pool. It was absolute paradise and we can't wait to return!
Thank you!
Meika and Vince Koletar

My wife and I went to the Hamanasi with my parents and sister as a family vacation. We had an absolutely wonderful time there. We were stunned by how nice and helpful everyone there was! All staff were very friendly and made a point to remember your names. They were always genuinely willing to help.

We were a bit concerned before leaving as my wife was 3 months pregnant at the time of the trip. She couldn't do a lot of the adventures and was worried the trip may not be so fun. Once we got there that worry was put to rest. She had a great trip and had plenty to do (or nothing, and just relax!). All the water is filtered, even the ice cubes! They even put a water cooler in the rooms with filtered water. The food was excellent, and there was a new menu every night. There was always a choice to satisfy everyone. 1-2 meat entrees, a vegetarian entree, and usually 1-2 seafood entres. Deserts were great as well.

All in all, this is one of the best resorts we've ever stayed at. The staff really go above and beyond to make sure your trip is just how you want it.

  • Liked — The people!
  • Disliked — No shore diving like some other Caribbean resorts.

Hamanasi is a very beautiful resort that is well maintained, and has plenty of staff. Unfortunately for us, the staff was not very helpful. They did not give out information very easily, you had to ask for it. So, if you didn't know the correct questions to ask, you were out of luck. My wife is a vegetarian, and the options for food for her to eat were slim and none. I eat meat, and I was disappointed with the food they had to offer. We walked down the beach to "Belizean Dreams", and had two wonderful meals.

There were a lot of problems with Hamansi itself. Their tours are wonderful, as well as their facilities. But outside of that, I would avoid it, and go to Belizean Dreams or Jaguar Reef.

We were very dismayed to read this review and would like to apologize to blockthatkick and his wife for the poor service they received. All staff, including our guest services manager, that interacted with this couple was interviewed about their interaction with them and none of them recall (or admit to) the couple explaining any problems or having special requests. We pride ourselves on delivering on special requests! We had three other vegetarians in house during the same week and they all reported on their guest comment forms that we did great job of providing them excellent vegetarian food and options. We take feedback very seriously and really can not figure out how we did such a poor job of satisfying this guests needs. This couple received a personal apology from our staff and were offered compensation on the meals they purchased from us. If you are a future guest of Hamanasi please do not hesitate to ask us ahead of time about any requests you might have and let us know when you visit how we are doing during your stay!

The Hamansi Resort caught my eye through Island Dreams Travel agency. The resort sounded a little different than your basic travel package deal. I planned the trip for myself and my sister, so we could have some down time together. I was afraid it might be a little too adventurous for her, but she gamely decided to come along. It turned out to be absolutely the best vacation either one of us had ever had, and the most wonderful and special vacation for the two of us. We did the Reef and Rainforest package which included our room, 3 meals a day, transfers from Belize city, and 5 "adventures" that including reef tours (diving and snorkeling) and rainforest tours (beautiful walks through the forest, different sanctuaries, a Mayan archaeological tour) that we could choose from. We were treated like royalty from the moment we left the Dangriga airport. The driver of our van answered all of our questions about everything we saw all the way to the resort. When we arrived, we got our welcome cocktail, which was very welcome cause it was hot, and dinner seating arranged and our trip chosen for the next day. The resort is small, but absolutely beautiful. Everyone was friendly and helpful no matter what their job was. The food was delicious, and there was always ample variety so it was easy to find something you really wanted. We had to even give up eating dessert, we just couldn't fit it in after the appetizer and entree at dinner. The room was lovely with 10 foot ceilings (maybe 12?) with 2 over head fans, tile floors and plenty of room to move around. The walls were so solid we never ever heard a sound from the rooms next to us or over us. We lucked out weatherwise, it only rained at night, and the breeze was off the ocean so the mosquitoes were not quite so bad. You must take the appropriate bugspray, or the bugs will bother you. But it was nowhere near as bad as Alaska in the summer, even when we were hiking through the jungle. There were numerous honeymooning couples, couples with older children, friends with friends, and everyone enjoyed visiting with each other. We got recommendations from the people who had already done the trips as to what their favorites were, and we all got to know each other as we ended up doing similar things for a couple of days. Seating for all meals was outside on the verandah, or out on the patio, with some special seating for special occasions further out near the ocean. There were bikes available to ride into Hopkins, but a taxi was cheap. There were a couple of restaurants and shops there, but this is definitely not your typical tourist town like Cozumel or Cancun. This is much closer to how Cozumel was in the early 80's. But smaller. The trips we chose to take were carefully chaperoned by amazing guides who were able to answer any and all questions about the trees, birds, and wildlife. So much information, and so much pride in their country. I was very very impressed. My sister was so comfortable that she forgot to be nervous, and was able to enjoy every adventure that we went on. The diving and snorkeling was magnificent, the boat driver took the time to search out the manatees and the dolphins for us if there was a report of them in the area. The Mayan tour was unbelievable, and full of wonderful and accurate information about the 2 very different sites. The walk to the Mayflower falls was hard, but worth every step of the way when we reached the top. We were never hurried or rushed, we had avid photographers with us on all trips, and they were allowed plenty of time to take their pictures.

I could just go on and on, it was truly awesome, every minute of it. I cannot wait to return, the adventure trips that were optional sounded like so much fun, and we heard great things about them, so we have to go back and try those. We are thinking 2 weeks next time, one week with the rest of the family maybe, and then one week again, just sister time. Be sure to read through the Hamansi website, their information is accurate and informative. Be sure to get a good Belize guide, and read about the country itself, it has a fascinating history, and the history of the area we were in is particularly interesting. Remember you are in the tropics, and that it is hot, you are near the equator. There are bugs. July seemed to be a good time, not as hot as it could be, but still hot. Although right now there is a heatwave where i live which feels about the same as Belize.

Thanks to all the people at the Hamanasi resort for making our stay so special, and all the new friends we met from all over the US who also made the trip so extra special too!

laid back luxury is how I define this resort. Clean and comfortable, the friendliest, most helpful staff and a pool by the beach. what else can you ask for?
warning: if you're looking for night life, shopping or site viewing don't go there. also, it takes a while to get to the place. From Belize city you take a tiny plane (20 min flight) to Dangriga and then a minivan (30 min ride) to the resort.
We spent our 6-day honeymoon at hamanasi and it was everything we hoped for. we chose one of the tree houses, which was beautiful and very private. the only downside of it was the mosquitoes, but how can you control that? there seems to be more of them by the tree houses than by the other type of rooms (the tree houses are completely surrounded by trees, which is really cool). warning: you will need deet bugspray.
it rained only one day -big tropical storm- and the next morning. otherwise the weather was perfect.
the food was good. we bought a package that included 3 meals a day. My husband is vegan and they went out of their way to prepare dishes he could eat and keep him satisfied. the menu rotates every week and there are daily options, so you can eat different things every day. the scuba diving service was amazing! they do everything for you and the reef is only half hour on the boat (the boat leaves from the hotel's deck). you can take a course and get certified while you stay there too.
