“BED BUGS!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013

My husband and I recently stayed at Allegro Papagayo in Costa Rica from 10/20/2013 though 10/25/2013. The first two nights in the resort were outstanding! We were pleased with the food, cleansing-ness, the atmosphere but most importantly the employees friendliness there were great. I would specifically want to talk about Carlos in the buffet area. Carlos was always on his toes and from the moment we got there he welcomed us, asked our names and never forgot them and he knew what we like to drink or knew what we would like to probably try. I could go on and on about how great Carlos in the buffet was. However, the third night (Tuesday to Wednesday) there was a nightmare. We woke up with an excessive number of bites. We come to realize there were BED BUGS. The first two nights we realized we were waking up with new bites and like anyone would think we thought it was mosquito bites. Though, they really attacked the third night there. That is when we checked the mattress and it was infested with bed bugs. It was extremely GROSS! We were in the main lobby all day Wednesday trying to change rooms. We were in room 1030. They let us see room 1032 next and it was worse than our room. The mattress in the room had blood stains all over it and showed signs of bed bugs. After, they showed us two more rooms 1033 and 1034, both showing signs of bed bugs. Lastly, a room opened 1134. Bedroom 1134 showed signs, ripped mattress and we saw a live bed bug crawling around. By this point we had lost it already. The general manger, Augstin, from the resort was hard to reach and was not trying to help us. Actually, when we spoke to him he said that “he sanitizes the beds and there are no bed bugs in his rooms,” He continued by saying that “if there is bed bugs it’s because we brought them.” Yes, because we brought bed bugs into five different rooms, make no sense. Agustin was unwilling to help and has poor people skills. We were happy with the services there; the few upsetting parts were the bed bugs, the general manager Agustin and one of the girls in the front lobby Veronica. Veronica spoke with attitude and did not even try to help us. BE AWARE PEOPLE! You do not want to bring bed bugs to your home.

Dear TiffanyandLino,

We truly appreciate the time you took to write your review; we shared your review with our management, our guest’s feedback helps us to focus our attention in the areas where we need improvement and to enhance our guest’s experience. Please accept our sincerest apologies for any incident you encountered during your stay.

We would like to confirm that there have been no complaints or evidence of bed bugs in any of our rooms from clients, employees, associates or through our pest control weekly inspections. Therefore we can confirm that during November, month which you indicated you had stayed, no bed bug incidents occurred. We take the prevention and treatment of bed bug infestations very seriously. We believe that prevention starts with a daily inspection by housekeeping staff to identify any evidence of bed bugs every time a bed is made. We also train hotel staff on our bed bug protocol and work with a national pest control company to inspect and treat any room if bed bugs were alleged to be present.

We hope despite this experience, you present us an opportunity to show you the level of service you have come to know and expect of our property. We look forward to a return visit from you.

Sincerely,

We were at the resort September 13-20, 2013. The hotel scenery is absolutely breath-taking! It is located on a the bay, surrounded by mountains and lush tropical vegetation, and has a volcanic black sand beach. The coolest thing at the resort are the different animals that you will find there, from racoons to monkeys, wildlife is simply incredible there! The resort itself is very clean and well kept. Their restaurant staff are very pleasant, especially Jimmy at the buffet, you can ask him anything and he will offer great tips! However, their food selection is poor and you eat pretty much the the same thing every day! Food was much better at a la carte restaurants. Their entertainment team sucks! Do not expect fun activities during the day, and forget about night entertainment, it is simply horrible, you might as well just go to sleep after dinner. That being said, Costa Rica is not the place where you spend your time on the resort! I strongly recommend booking as many day trips as possible. Costa Rica is just such a beautiful place and has so much to offer, you dont want to waste a single day at the resort. We did quite a bit of research about different tour operators and we booked all of our trips with www.costaricaforeveryone.com. It was absolutely an amazing experience! Do not bother with the tour operators at the hotel. CostaRicaForEveryone offers fantastic tour packages that are not only decently priced but are private and offer a genuine experience of Costa Rica. Contact Roy at CostaRicaForEveryone and you are guaranteed a great time in Costa Rica. If you are a young adult like me, spend time in Tamarindo and go surfing there! In fact, next time I come to Costa Rica I will spend most of my time in Tamarindo. Also, if you are into fishing, definitely go finishing! At the resort beach you will find several people offering to take you fishing. I recommend finding Roxanna, she works with the elderly man and a boy who helps them out, and they also take people on the banana boat rides. One more thing, it is very difficult to change Canadian cash there so just bring American currency.

Room Tip: Get a room at the higher floor to get a nicer view

My friend and I took a girls getaway and stayed at Allegro for 7 days. I want to first give credit to the fantastic staff who knew us by name after the first day. Christian at the pool bar, Erik in guest services and wonderful Jimmy my personal "coffee" maker made us both feel so welcome. We had read several reviews regarding the food, some good and some bad, however we both eat clean, that is to say, fresh fruit, veg and proteins and were so happy with the buffet selection of healthy food not marred by heavy sauces and the tasty selections at the a la carte. We started every day with an omlette made to order, hot coffee, fruit and veg...I could have stayed forever.
We also went on the snorkle/fishing excursion and had a fantastic day, lots of sun, laughs, and a great shore lunch prepped by Bruno our captain. We rented a car at the resort and travelled to La Fortuna. Along the way we stopped at Toad Hall..(you must go to Toad Hall!!!)..had a margarita or two, wrote on the wall of fame, and continued our trek around Lake Arenal. Once in La Fortuna we stayed at Mount Real Motel and were treated so well by the family who operate the business, the rooms were clean, the property well maintained and were provided with a voucher for breakfast at the local soda. They also provided information on activites/locations as we were hiking and had no idea where to go. I highly reccommend hiking to the lake...if you are in good shape!!! What a workout!!!

There is a $29.00 departure tax to leave the country so save some dollars for that. I will be returning to Costa Rica in the future to do some diving as 7 days was not enough time to fit in all the activities I wanted to do. I love the people and the beauty of the country..Pura Vida!!!!!!

My fiance and I stayed at Allegro Papagayo for 7 nights. Our overall experience was wonderful. The staff are very friendly and eager to please you. The drive from the airport to the resort is only half n hour. When we arrived, we were greeted with drinks and the check in process was quick-our rooms were not ready so we just enjoyed the view from the lobby. Eric, one of the shuttle drivers carried our bags to our room on the third floor and even replaced one of the room keys for us because it wasn't working - on our last day he also reminded us to call the lobby so he would come to pick up our luggage and drive us to the lobby, which we thought was really nice of him. The rooms were nice-not too fancy-came with a bar fridge stocked with water and ice tea, coffee maker, tv, no iron, but it had an amazing view. There are not too many things to do on the resort, but if you want to play volleyball or anything you just have to ask the entertainment staff and they will set it up for you (I'm pretty sure this is because we went during the low season). We walked out of the resort, but it got pretty tiring after climbing 2-3 hills, so we decided to rent a car and just explore the city ourselves - it takes about 30 mins to drive out of the resort area - We drove to various beaches and to Libera to shop and eat. The locals were very nice - we had some offers for tours and excursions as well, but we had already set those up with the resort. We did the blue river excursion- which was a safari, a hike/zip lining and a spa with a sauna, volcanic mud bath and hot springs. It was a lot of fun and relaxing too. Our tour guide Hugo and Jose were great - they did their best to show us the country and the wild life- monkeys, parrots, tucans and other animals. We really liked the friendly staff and it was nice that they remembered you and always say hi to you. The food at the resort was good, there was a good selection, but it is repetitive-pasta bar, grill station, good veges, and usually a fish, chicken and beef or pork dish- the fruits and desserts were great. We ate at the Italian and Mexican restaurant twice - the food was better than than the buffet at both places. The beach was pretty unique - it had black sand which made it easier to find shells and crabs - the resort also offers a boat ride to a white sand beach, which is also nice -the fish swim around you while you're in the water, and you can spot some nice birds around. Overall we had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and would definitely return!

I stayed at this place for 7 days. It's the worst place i have ever stayed at. We got there on oct 14th, scenery was beautiful, resort was nice and then we get to our room. They don't know what a face cloth is. Views from the room were fantastic. The food was terrible, it was bland and not much of a choice. Snacks consisted of stale nachos, hot dogs, dried burgers and pizza. Absolute crap. The bar was the worst i,ve ever seen, and drinks were weak, had to get a triple shots for any flavor and I don't drink. Back to the food, my wife had breakfast one morning and nothing but a banana each morning for the next 6 days. She eat the soup for dinner six nights out of 7 .. Finding mustard at this place took 2 days. There is nothing to dofriendly, Overall, this place was a huge disappointment and i will never return to any Occidental related resorts, or to Costa Rica. I found Costa Rica to be over hyped and under delivered much like the Occidental Allegro. Also when returning to the airport we were hit with a surprise of $29.00 per person fee to leave Costa Rica. Well that was another story, spent 90 minutes fighting with Airline personnel and Costa Rica Officials. They was not going to let me leave CR because I didn't have the $58.00 plus they $10.00 fee they charge your credit card. I will never recommend anyone I know to travel to Costa Rica. No one seems to care how Americans are treated.

I had a great time at the resort. I traveled with my wife and 2 young daughters 10 and 6. The room was clean and well stocked. the TV worked, the beds were comfortable. My daughters had the best time in the pool, and the activities the hotel does, like kids club and special entertainment at night. We adults could not complaint, the service was always top notch at the pool's bar and at the restaurants. Food selection was varied, and tasty. I wish we had done the "theme restaurants" for dinner, but the general buffet was great. Basically we were up at 8 had breakfast and spent all day outdoors, until 6 pm came back to get dressed for dinner and stayed until 11 PM. Night entertainment was great, a different show every night, with extra activities afterwards at the poolside bar. There were 2 pool tables and little soccer table for the kids, plus music. In all a great experience and I highly recommend it to families with kids.
If you want all luxury, go to the Grand Papagayo, across the gulf, the room are all luxurious but the pool is hardly a water hole and the beach requires a trip on a cart to get there. Perfect for Indoors people or retirees.

Room Tip: Get the building in front of the pool, the best rooms closer to all activities.
