The service was excellent from the airport pick up through to downtown transfers. I found the staff very helpful on every level. I found the property magnificent with a really great ambiance and feel. Food was very good in some ways but I was a little let down by the food variety. The resort is priced at the top of the market and rightly so. I would not hesitate in suggesting this property for any type of visit.

Four seasons papagayo has all the qualities you will expect from a four seasons resort. The hotel showcases a remarkable site as well as the culture, people, history and local products of the region. Service is friendly and efficient. It is a beautiful property. The food is excellent and locally sourced with several restaurants rotating being open through the week. Rooms and architecture are soothing and pretty in the familiar modern style of four seasons.

For those familiar with Hualalai and Punta Mita, what are the comparisons? I would rank the beaches at Papagayo higher for those with small children because of the warm, calm water. The hotel also provides greater opportunities for the naturalistic side trips that costa rica is known for, though some driving is needed to reach them. One could have a perfect resort-at-the-beach experience here, but could miss out on zip-lining, birdwatching, etc. Also, the hotel is a little lower key than the other two. For example, Punta Mita has a lazy river and Hualalai has some remarkable pools. On the other hand, there are ocean and bay side beaches at papagayo. Because the peninsula is so narrow it’s possible to walk from one to the other in 3 minutes. Also, although we don’t play golf, a golf cart tour of the course was itself an amazing encounter with the tropical flora and fauna, including huge mango trees, monkeys, a boa constrictor, couati, etc. As far as natural beauty and views goes, I would place hualalai and papagayo just a tad above punta mita, though all are breathtaking sites.

I came to resort in 2012 with a 5 year old and 7 year old children. Though concerned that we might not be able to do all the things that older kids might be able to do (such as hiking up into a volcano and enduring the longer jaunts into the interior of the country) we still had a blast and did accomplish some eco-touristic activities. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to head south of the USA to somewhere luxurious but not wanting to visit Mexico. South America or the Caribbean and even more to people who are interested in the ecology of this remarkable place.

My wife and I recently stayed to celebrate our 25 year wedding anniversary. Our connecting flight was severely delayed, arriving 4 hours late and past mid-night. Our hotel arranged driver was waiting for us and quickly escorted us to an awaiting car. The hotel was kind enough to transfer us directly to our suite with no check in. We stayed in a 1BR canopy suite, very nice, plenty of space, comfortable bed and lovely outside terrace. Only critique on the room would be for families traveling together. Access to the bathroom is through the master only and with children could create some challenges to privacy. We ordered breakfast for room service each AM to enjoy the outside space. The service was prompt, courteous and food choices and quality were both excellent. We dined at Carocal, a high end steakhouse. Prices are typical of a high end US steakhouse, food was outstanding, cooked perfectly and service great. We took advantage of a day spa treatment, and again this was outstanding. Courteous, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable. We took part in one day tour, Witch's Rock Zip Line. Lots of fun, close to the resort and a nice diversion. The jungle views are amazing and we were lucky enough to see a howler monkey. We would highly recommend the resort and very much look forward to a future visit.

Room Tip: If you're seeking privacy the suites are a much better option, the resorts rooms are close to the pools and families with young children.

I spent 5 days here with my husband. Absolutely the best hotel. Plenty to do. Two beautiful beaches, water sports complimentary. Food was excellent, employees were kind, welcoming and intuitive. If you asked for it, they'd find a way to get it for you. Would work very well for families.

Room Tip: We were on the 4th floor, bay side. View was beautiful!

We stayed here for 10 days (first time to Costa Rica) and loved it. We have three kids (ages 8, 12, and 14) and it was perfect. The rooms are spacious (with mosquito screened large deck), and the resort amenities are plentiful. Included in the price are most activities, and the daily menu indicates whether there is an additional fee--you can kayak, snorkel, bird watch, hike, all at no additional expense. There are also cooking, language, and dance classes. The resort is pretty isolated, but I would NOT recommend getting car, given the high cost of mandatory car insurance in Costa Rica. You can arrange off-site outings with the hotel. It's not really worth it to seek other beaches because the Four Seasons beaches are the best, and it takes a while to get to any other beach. The few local "towns" within 45 minute driving distance are a bit shady and run down--you don't get a sense of the local culture, just a lot of timeshare hawkers trying to sell. The hotel restaurants are varied, so you don't get tired of the same daily meals. The area is pretty undeveloped (despite large billboards to the contrary), so there are no real alternative restaurant options, but the Four Seasons doesn't take advantage of the lack of competition--the food is yummy and prices are resort-reasonable.
