We had a wonderful time at Four Seasons Papagayo. It is the nicest resort experience we've ever had. The beaches and pools are beautiful, and the service was above excellent. No request was too difficult. From the moment we checked in until we drove away to the airport we were treated like royalty from a friendly and helpful staff. The only reason there was any category less than 5 stars was the location. If you're looking for a resort experience and will be happy not leaving the area, then this is the place for you. The closest town is a 45 minute drive or 15 minute boat ride but the boat only goes once a day. So it is a bit isolated on the peninsula but there are 2 beautiful beaches and 4 relaxing pools on the resort as well as lots of other things to do and organized activities.

We spent five nights here with two other family groups. By the trip's mid-point we'd coined a phrase to describe the amazing and thoughtful service we experienced at every turn: "You've just been seasoned."

It's these special touches that truly set this property (and this brand) apart:

-Sit by the pool and watch the snacks and services arrive every 30 minutes or so. You'll wonder how you ever survived without someone expertly cleaning your sunglasses once a day.

-Come back to the same chairs the next day and find they've been "saved" for you by your pool attendant (thanks, Francisco!).

-Leave a book open in your room and you'll find it neatly closed by your beside table with a Four Seasons bookmark to mark your page.

-Visit the spa for the best massage you've ever had, with unique touches throughout (like perfectly steamed towels). Ask for Javier.

-Ask at the Concierge desk for a tour guide who will show you where the monkeys live on the property. Ours took us about 15 minutes away to a treed area by the Fifth Hole of the golf course where we saw huge families of howler and white-faced monkeys.

-Splurge for a private dinner on the beach, complete with tiki torches and your own menu. Our server Jamie was amazingly friendly and accommodating.

All of these "seasonings" are delivered by some of the nicest people we've ever encountered at any resort anywhere. A couple of examples:

-I woke one day to find my wallet missing. I realized I musts have left it in my shorts at the pool the previous day. I went down to the pool to find that Luis-Diego had found my shorts, which were returned with all my cards and over $400 in cash intact.

-We saw the manager of the resort out and about most days. One very hot afternoon we watched as he delivered a tray of cold drinks to his staff working around the pool. Great service definitely starts at the top!

Two small areas for improvement: Ditch the charges on wifi. And put up some signs in the Serenity Pool area discouraging people from talking on their cell phones.

Otherwise, pure perfection.

Room Tip: We wondered if it would be worth it to get a villa with a plunge pool: It definitely is. There's no better way to start and end each day.

Dear guest, thank you for sharing your comments! I am more than happy to know that you had a memorable stay and that it was almost perfect. We are very proud of our product and brand, but most of all, of our staff. They are the ones who deliver the magic you experience. They are truly magicians. I am going to pass your comments along, and thank you for the two observations. We hope we can have the opportunity to welcome you again in the near future, so you have the chance, again, to revive the magic! Pura Vida, Pascal F., General Manager.

The hotel is very good, great location and staff. The beaches are great, as well as the gym and pool. Pool service is amazing! Lots of pampering such as Evian spray for the face, sunglasses cleaning, etc. I spent 1 week there and had 2 food poisonings (tuna)… We were in a large group of friends (20) and other people also experienced the same problem in different days.

Dear Paula, I appreciate your positive comments about our resort, although you experimented some health issues. I just want to clarify, that the people who got sick was because of a virus that struck the region of Guanacaste. This virus was not unique to the Four Seasons, but infected the guests of every hotel, as well as much of the local population. Although most of the guests received medical attention, and responded well to the treatment, it is not pleasant being sick during your vacation. Please rest assure that it is our priority, at Four Seasons, the health, safety and security of our guests and employees. We actually took actually took additional measurements to ensure guests and employees’ protection. We aim for our guests to leave the resort with great memorable experiences and are extremely sorry that your friends got sick. Best regards, Pascal F., General Manager.

My wife and I have wanted to go to Costa Rica for quite some time. Our travel agent recommended this place and it sounded nice. After our wonderful experience at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora we figured "why not?" and really trusted the brand. As we were to later find out, not all Four Seasons were created the same,

Our first impression upon arriving was that the property was nice but very spread out. The frequent golf carts roaming around initially seemed like a luxury but later we learned were a necessity, given how hilly and far things were from each other. Luckily, or so we thought, our initial room was close to the main area. This actually turned out to be a bad thing as the noise from the beach and pools easily reached our room and did not let us relax in the morning, waking us up at 8 AM.

As for the property, two words for this are: kids and conventions. I understand Costa Rica is more of a family destination vacation spot for families compared to other places, but the amount of children who were initially there were ridiculous. Kids themselves are fine, but when they are screaming everywhere and make accidents in the pools, it becomes a problem. The "quiet pool" was anything but, as it was crowded with middle aged and older adults (at least two conventions there at any given time) who were treating it like their own personal frat party. The beaches were OK, but the sand was muddy and nothing special; for white powdery sand you'd be better off in South Florida (South Beach and Ft. Lauderdale). Also, all the vegetation looked dried out and worn; April might not be the best time to go as it is still the dry season.

The ambiance was completely off for what we were looking for, but we were still willing to give it a go. However, our room's air conditioning broke (was not fixed correctly despite several attempts) and that was the straw that broke the camel's back. We threatened to leave and after talks back and forth between the hotel staff and our travel agent, they upgraded us to a private villa free of charge.

The private villa was gorgeous. It was very spacious, had an infinity plunge pool with an amazing view, a balcony, and an additional outdoor shower space. After this we finally were able to relax and begin to enjoy ourselves. A quick roam around the property showed us the fitness room (very well taken care of and with plenty of equipment) and spa (one of the best ever). We enjoyed the hotel amenities and didn't mind paying the Four Seasons rates.

Service was very good and we were always greeted with a friendly "Hola!" everywhere we went. The artisan market on most weekdays brought beautiful and interesting artists and souvenirs to you and really showed off some of the local flair. Food was delicious, albeit expensive, and I will review individual restaurants later on. The Trail of the Giants is a must and will afford you the opportunity to see Howler monkeys, white faced capuchins, bisottes, and other wildlife spaced out over the well-manicured golf course.

Overall the hotel is nice but not worth the Four Seasons rates. It's a great destination for families and convention goers but probably not for couples. In our entire trip we never really saw or connected with any other younger adults our age. The spa, service, and private villas were wonderful pros but did not offset the lack of a romantic environment. Costa Rica was nice but if we ever go back we will stick to the rainforest and avoid the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for something away from the pools unless you want to be woken up by 8 AM every day. Sound carries very well here.

Fantastic property, great service, wild monkeys and birds everywhere, no rain in 6 months, great fishing, spa and golf. The rooms are beautiful, the beach is on two sides, the hotel is at the end of the peninsula. The hotel is secluded, but if you are looking for a great out of the way luxury hotel, to rest and enjoy the beach, play golf, have wild monkeys waking you up in the morning, perhaps walking by with their family as you have an early morning breakfast, playing golf on a wonderful golf course, see monkeys and birds all over the course, perhaps catching a blue marlin or a few sailfish ( we did), have a spa day with a coffee aromatherapy, than this is the place you are looking for. It about 45 minutes from LIB or 4 hours from SJO, the roads are great, do not be afraid to drive.

Room Tip: Request a high level room in the building directly behind the check in building, right behind the pool. The balcony will be right on the beach, easy to get around. Some of the buildings are in front of the check in, you have farther to walk to the beach and pool and are on the water, but not as close. I had a great room, the last room on the top floor, right on the beach with a western facing room for the sunsets.
