“Beautiful hotel on the peninsula!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

This hotel was awesome! We reached the outside gates, gave them our names and were admitted in. By the time we got to the front entrance of the hotel the staff were all outside ready to greet us. We were given a tour of the property and our actual room. The view from our room was amazing!!! I wish we had more time to enjoy this little gem. The coastline was beautiful! The rooms were so comfortable, clean and beautiful. My husband and I agreed that in our 10 days staying in Costa Rica we slept the best at the Andaz. We had been hiking that day and arrived gross and dirty. I had hurt myself during the hike. One of the front desk staff called our room that night offering to have a masseurs come and give me a treatment. I had taken some pain meds and was asleep but that was a very thoughtful addition.
The only single downside of this hotel, if I could find one, was our experience at the restaurant. We had our dinner there at the Rio Bhongo restaurant. They had sample food items, buffet style in the center of the restaurant but it was not explained to us that we were welcome to help ourselves. They also did not have one of the main entree items available that we ordered. The meal was good, although nothing special. Excluding our small dissatisfaction at the restaurant this hotel was amazingly beautiful and comfortable! And to boot-- all the food/snacks and drinks excluding alcohol were all complimentary! The grounds are nestled on the hills but they offer golf cart transportation anytime and anywhere within the property so don't worry about getting around.

Dear Lezlie,

thank you very much for your recent stay at the Andaz.

We appreciate you took the time to share your experiences and we were delighted that you and your husband had an amazing time on property. After all your hiking it was certainly well deserved. Thank you also for commenting on your dinner in Rio Bhongo. I will make sure to connect with the culinary team and discuss.

Thank you again for staying with us and hopefully we will see you again on the Peninsula Papagayo.

With best regards,

We had such a memorable trip to Costa Rica and the Andaz is a big part of that experience. The property is brand new and amazing! This was our first time staying at an Andaz property and we were very impressed. First, the drive there is a bit long from Liberia but not nearly as long as the Marriott (another 35 km) or the Westin Playa Conchal. We thought about staying at the Four Seasons but we were upgraded to a suite at the Hyatt property and traveling with 3 small children (ages 5,3, and 1) we opted for the additional space. The suite was huge. It featured a large office area, powder bath, living room, walk-in closet, huge master bath with rain shower & wand (perfect for washing sand off), a spacious bedroom and a very large balcony with custom lighting, sound, and chairs with ottomans. While the modern furnishings may put you off a bit if you have children or have ever shopped at an IKEA let me assure you that everything here is top of the line and very comfortable. Another huge thing is the mini bar and the fact that everything in it is complimentary!!!! Now, I should disclose that we are diamond members so this might not be the case for everyone but for us, there was a free mini bar that was restocked everyday and had 3 different types of alcohol and an assortment of beers! Also, when we arrived the staff greeted us at the lobby by name, and escorted us to our room where complimentary wine, straw hats and toys were waiting for the kids AND free flip flops too! The room had already been set up with a roll away bed and a crib for our littlest one. They paid so much attention to the details! They have numerous golf carts for shuttling you around the property and they also offer complementary shuttle service to nearby restaurants if you get bored of the 2 they have on site, which is a nice touch seeing as the four season charges for the shuttle use. They also have a free kids club that is open from 8am to 5:30 pm for children ages 3 to 12. The pools are nice, there is a beach entry on one that really worked well for our little ones and there were tons of chairs and towels everywhere.

Pros:
Newer resort
Clean and spacious rooms
Friendly staff that really go the extra mile to make you feel special
Great Pools
2 Different beaches on the resort grounds and more available
free shuttle service

Cons
Here I am really hesitant to place anything because our experience was so wonderful and I doubt the staff has anything to do with this but there were a couple of things I really feel should be addressed.
1. The price of kids meals. $15 USD is a LOT of money for a bowl of pasta. Yes, it's a vacation but this seemed excessive... especially if you are staying for a length of time and have multiple little ones. It can add up quickly.
2. The price of laundry $5 per item is a LOT of money to wash a baby shirt. Yes, again we are on vacation but we came to the Hyatt from another 5 star resort that only charged $1 per item.

While I know these two things are really small I feel obligated to mention it, in hopes management will see this and reconsider because I know that other guests who visit the hotel and are faced with it will say to themselves, "d***... really?" LOL!

Overall we really had a pleasant stay and cannot wait to visit Costa Rica again.

Room Tip: We were in a suite in building 3. Great views and close to the restaurants and pools! Pura Vida

Too bad the rating system only goes to 5, I'd easily give this hotel & it's staff a 15 on a scale of 10. This is one of the world's truly great experiences. The resort is sleek, unique & totally chic. The architecture is in harmony with environment. It feels integrated into the surroundings not intrusively plopped into it. Staff is incredibly approachable, friendly & helpful. Not stiff & distant like the neighboring 5 star resort. Special kudos to Andrea at the adult pool & Josephine in the tapas bar. The outdoor rain shower in our room was especially fun, again it brought the natural beauty of the peninsula into our room. Romantic spot for a couple. Loved breakfast in Rio Bhongo & especially loved the tapas bar for dinner. Everything about the Andaz is special, if you can go!

We, too, just got back from the Andaz, and have nothing but great things to say. Even with a few flukes, this resort has so much going for it, that it’s not worth it to sweat the small stuff.

Dining: We ate at the tapas restaurant our first night and had the sampler tapas plate with two drinks. For one, the sampler plate is large, and at $23—a steal. Gives you may options to try and you fill up quite fast, which was why we didn’t order anything else. The drinks are heaven, and this goes throughout the resort. There was never a time I heard “No, we cannot make that.” Not only can they make it, they make them very tasty. Drinks begin at $8 at Chao Pesco and can vary accordingly. Left spending about $65 for a few drinks and the sampler plate with 23% fees and additional tip.

We ate at Rio Bhongo the last day, but ordered room service one night. The pineapple dessert is what Rio Bhongo should be known for. At $10, it’s quite a show. They have it on the dinner menu; however, if you want it any other time during the day, just ask—it takes about 30 minutes to bake. Just for an idea of what it is it: it’s a pineapple baked in honey and sugar with 10+ toppings to go with it and create your own “pineapple sundae” if you will. For meals, we had the cheeseburger and ceviche from Rio Bhongo, which were great for the price. As someone mentioned before, it is cheaper to order the cheeseburger through room service (~$1 cheaper, but you must remember the additional mandatory 23% tax on everything). The cheeseburger is so large, we split it for lunch on our last day with the ceviche. Again, they are very accommodating and didn’t mind the request.

Breakfast buffet is $68.88 (fees and taxes included) for two. As a Diamond, everything was taken care of by the hotel (even our generous tip, which I find depends on the property). There is a large assortment of options from: omelets/eggs, pastries (coffee cake is great and low-sugar), juices/fruit, and a coffee bar. Please try a smoothie if you have the chance! Even drinks ordered off the coffee bar menu are included within the breakfast buffet price.

Traveling/Gas/Etc: We rented a car from Vamos and it was probably the best decision of the trip. Vamos ran out of GPS systems, so we were on our own, but I found CR very easy to navigate. Although none of the roads are labeled, the tourist-y areas are all labeled with directions before each turn. There are two main roads you will want to get situated with and those are 253 and 21. The peninsula is right off of 253 and 21 is the road you take from LIR→Andaz. There are many gas stations once you get on 21. In fact if you are heading off of the Andaz property on 253, turn right onto 21, and there will be a gas station in the next town (about 5 mins away) on the left. Fill up there before returning your car to LIR.

We traveled to Rincon de la Vieja, Playa del Coco, and Tamarindo, and found them only with one hiccup (missed the last road to get to Tamarindo). I suggest traveling to ALL of them if you have the chance. We hiked, ziplined the canopy, and rode horses in Rincon with CostaRicaBesTrips—Mario was awesome!

For a great surfing beach, head to Tamarindo. There are many restaurants and other tourist shops as well. For parking, right when you get into town (after Best Western), there is a parking lot for 5000$/day on the right. The car will be watched over and it is right on the beach. There are various options for surfboard rentals/classes, etc. which I highly suggest if you haven’t tried! You may also pick up a catamaran here for snorkeling/booze cruises. Tamarindo is about 1.5 hours away from Andaz.

Playa del Coco is smaller than Tamarindo, but it is where all the ex-Pats live (there is a small international school outside town). Great area for small bars and local eats. I highly suggest getting here for the sunset as the park overlooks the horizon and you can grab a beer right across the street as the sun goes down. You may also pick up a catamaran here for snorkeling/booze cruises. Playa del Coco is about 25 minutes away from Andaz.

Onsite: Again, everything was amazing. We were in suite 431, which had amazing views. As stated before, buildings 3 and 4 are the highest buildings on the property and with the best views of the peninsula. All larger suites are in the lower buildings, which will affect your views. I would stay in 431 next time I go back. There is a free mini-bar that is refreshed daily which includes alcohol (vodka, a coffee liquor called Cafe Rico, and a Costa Rican liquor. The refrigerator is a drawer-refrigerator, which doesn’t give you many options if you bring anything in—and nor is it very cold.

Room Tip: Not about room but important to know about CR: Something to know about the mandatory taxes (sorry if...

We had such an amazing stay and hope to return sometime soon. This hotel and its staff were the highlight of our 9-day vacation, which included sightseeing in La Fortuna and then staying at the Four Seasons (where we became very ill).
You must eat at the tapas bar. The chef will most certainly be famous. Everything we ordered was a delicious, sensuous delight. Also the cocktails there were in a class of their own- creative, blissful!

Dear Guest,

thank you very much for making us part of your Costa Rica vacation! We are very proud that you consider us the highlight of your stay.

I'm also convinced our Chef's fame will raise and hope you will be able to come back to the Andaz again in the near future. He is just about to 'upgrade' his current menu.

Pura Vida and thank you for your review,

Wife and I stayed for five days at this beautiful new resort. Have traveled all around the world and have never had a better experience. Very helpful and friendly staff, the room was quite contemporary and user friendly with gorgeous views. Though only one restaurant was open the food was excellent. Took free shuttle to Four Seasons which seemed crowded and touristy by comparison. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we loved it and can't wait to return both to the country and this hotel. Well done!

Run, don't walk (well, drive) to this property! It is absolutely fantastic. My family of 5 had an absolutely wonderful time at the hotel. We had two suites, and the rooms are large, spacious, and completely luxurious. The food, the infinity pools, the drinks, but most especially the staff made the entire experience beyond wonderful. Oh, and the spa experiences are phenomenal, the best we've had in any hotel location. Kudos and high fives to the architect/designer of the property. It is gorgeous and breathtaking. Our new favorite place in Costa Rica!

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the water. Rooms in buildings 4, 5, and 6 are higher, but all views are good.
