“Near perfection”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2014

We stayed at Manala Hotel from 20-24JAN14. The location is great, approximately 200 meters from the beach. It is across the street from one of the many beach-access roads in Santa Teresa making the walk to the beach very convenient. The hotel itself is very quiet even though it is located off the main road. It is within 5 minutes walking distance of two stores, many restaurants, and surf shops. The hotel restaurant, "El Pulpo" is delicious, serving the best pizza in town. It also serves a complimentary breakfast of fresh fruit, toast, orange juice and coffee. We also found a security guard walking the grounds every night. Our only complaints are that the restaurant is "cash-only" and the only ATM in town is approximately a 30 minute walk away. Also, our beach and bath towels were not replaced during our stay. However, Manala hotel was beautiful, clean, and a safe place to stay during our visit to Santa Teresa.

Room Tip: Walls are relatively sound-proof so noise is not an issue... though you can hear the howler monkeys...

Thank you very much for taking the time to write your feedback and thank you for your very nice review.
In El Pulpo Restaurant as in almost all of the restaurants located in Santa Teresa area only receive cash, this is because the high commissions that the bank entities keep to provide the card services, and we rather preffer to provide a better service at a lower cost for all of our clients and guests. Therefore, if it was the necessity of any of our guests to go to any bank to do any type of transactions, it will be our pleasure to provide the service of transportation to any of the Banks located by the main entrance to Santa Teresa.
Regarding the towels, here in all of our bungalows we have a written invitation that will ask our guests to help us to preserve and to have a good use of the water, it textually says: “ The program, Project Planet, is an initiative from this hotel directed to protect our environmet, by the conservation of the water and by reducing the detergent usage. If you are going to stay more than one night, we will wash your white clothing every three days. If you preffer not to participate in the program, the only thing that you will have to do is let us know with the receptionist. More than reducing the water usage and energy, you will help us to reduce the amount of water with detergent waste that we will have to recycle in our community. Please hung your towels if you will like to participate in the program. By the contrary, you just have to leave them in the floor and Rosi the mucama will change them every time you need.
We also have extra clean towels in the Reception, and the manager is always at the Hotel in case you need something.
Thanks again for your review, we hope to see you back at Manalá Hotel.

We stayed for a week in January. It was wonderful! Quiet, clean and the room was very spacious. The staff was amazing - they will help with anything you need. The pool was a great place to relax. Very central to beach, shops, great restaurants. Will definitely stay there again!

We stayed at the Manalá from Dec 30- Jan 2 with another couple and we had a blast. It's cute, clean, cozy and close to the beach. We met new friends and had awesome pizza and drinks at the little restaurant on location by the pool. The proprietor was a sweetheart and brought us ice from her own place when the ice was in short supply. Only drawbacks were that they would turn the AC off if you left the room. It would cool back down after a little while, and perhaps power is a precious commodity in Santa Teresa, but I was just a little annoyed by this and access to our room whenever they felt they needed to go in when we weren't there. However, nothing went missing and after a day or so we would just turn off the AC/Power if leaving for a little while (just wish they maybe would have discussed it w/ us rather than circumvent our privacy to shut it off.) Other than this, the experience was a great one. Everyone was friendly, helpful and we would definitely stay again and likely will.

We are glad that you had a blast. Good to know that you and your friends could enjoy of the pizza at our restaurant.
We have a "Project Planet Program" that is an effort of this hotel to protect the environment through conservation of water and decreased use of detergent, also to avoid the innecesary waste of electricity, and to avoid the global warming. At Manalá hotel there are A/Cs of latest technology, the room gets cold quickly (5 min). There is a paper with information about it behind the main door of each bungalow. We appreciate your suggestions, it makes us to improve our service. We are sorry to bother you.
Thanks a lot for the nice review,
Pura vida !!

Loved-Highly Recommend! Each is a "villa" - clean & cozy. WARNING - mgmt only allows AC on when you are in room & enforces it. A security grd entered our room @ night, w DNDisturb sign to turn AC off.

This was a beautiful vacation place, with easily the best service we've received. We'd never been to Costa Rica, let alone Santa Teresa, so kind of expected a few things to miss. Nothing did. Manala was a great decision. I emailed them 5 times before our trip, and they provided quick and excellent advice. Case in point - I delayed my decision to book a car, and after discussing that it was a good idea w Manala staff, I had trouble finding one. They found a car, and booked it for me (w Alamo). This was dec 4, for a dec 20 trip. Who does that?

The bungalows easily slept our 2 teens, my wife and I, with two single beds for the kids.

A direct shout out to Fabien - making dinner reservations, finding atv guides, surf guys, giving candid advice on tour options - he was fantastic. Even just inquiring about my wife was sick for a few days. He was awesome. Gracias amigo.

We stayed in room 7. Three steps to the pool and restaurant. No noise at all.

Note that some reviews reference the dusty road - sure the road to town is dusty, but the road in front of Manala is paved for at least 800m in both directions.

The breakfast was always pleasant, and while I forget the name of the Argentinian lady who served us, she was always happy, and super friendly. Gracias.

I'd also say - tip. Made us cringe when the euros would pay the straight amount of the bill. We're in Jaco now, and they add tip (servico) to the bill. Bugs me. We didn't see that anywhere in Santa Teresa. So - tip.

Oh - and the room service lady, when we checked out, came running up to is with my wife's wallet, which we left in a drawer.

Few suggestions: ask for a blanket. The AC is good, and you'll start with a light sheet on the beds. Turning down AC is option of course, but nice to have a bit more "cuddle" to the night.

If you're a newbie surfer - rent a car. Manala is right beside the best entrance to Santa Teresa beach, but it's for surfers who carve a bit. Newbies will want to head over to playa hermosa - about 4km? (15 min over super crappy roads) - but the most beautiful beach we've seen.

This is the best place we've vacationed. I booked based on trip advisor reviews, thus my returning the favour with a review. Hope it's helpful.

We are here to help all our visitors with everything that they may need. Here we know the best places to go around, the best restaurants, and we work with the best people. Santa Teresa has a really good beach break, with good waves every day.
Thank you very much for this excellent review, we are more than happy to read that you and your family enjoyed your days here.
See you next time amigo,

We stayed at Manala for 12 days in February 2013 during our first trip to Costa Rica. It was a wonderful experience to be tucked away and private, yet close to everything, including the beach, which was across the road. The accommodations are very comfortable and relaxing, with an enormous shower and a private porch.
The people in the office are knowledgeable and very helpful to guests. We will be definitely be back.

Room Tip: All rooms are well located. There are only 8 of them.
