From the moment our taxi pulled up to Calista Villa and the owner greeted us warmly in person, to the last hugs goodbye as we reluctantly departed, our stay was pretty much postcard perfect. We immediately felt at home in this lovely villa with everything conveniently in place. the kitchen is well equipped with coffee maker, proper utensils, blender, full stove and fridge. We made a few wonderful home cooked meals with fresh tuna our kids caught that day! The beds were very comfortable and bathrooms were lovely. The location is extremely convenient and breathtakingly beautiful, right on one of the most stunning beaches I've ever seen and we've traveled extensively. Our morning walks on the beach were precious and peaceful and long. The lady who came to clean every day did a great job and each day the villa was neat and tidy. The gardener was also very pleasant and helpful. So many things to do and see nearby such as snorkeling at Tortuga island, fishing, surfing, excellent yoga within walking distance, a supermarket, and an amazing choice of very high quality restaurants serving delicious cuisine - pleasantly surprising in this rustic town (must try Habanero, Zula, Tiquicia, Horizon, Koji's, The Bakery, Cafe Social, Ceviche at Playa Hermosa parking lot, too many to mention - and sunset at Banana Beach!) But this review would be incomplete without mentioning the highly personalized service the owner's showered us with - from booking cars, atv's, massage, physio therapy, private yoga class, you name it. Everything was arranged without one stressful minute of effort. That you can't put a price on. Throughout the stay my kids kept saying how happy I looked. Incidentally the owner's have some other lovely homes they were kind enough to allow us to visit. They offer a great range of high quality choices for anyone looking for a vacation home in Santa Teresa. Our vacation stay at Calista was a huge success and we will definitely recommend it to others and hopefully return in the not too distant future!
the hosts and serve was excellent, location, safety , and of course the Views ,
so beautiful, even if you are close to everything you never want to leave your Calista villa.,..
why go anywhere .....
We stayed for 11 days in Casa Calista, a one bedroom romantic bungalow right on the beach. It is in a great location with a supermarket within walking distance (100 m). Besides water and wine, we didn't really use the supermarket. Although the bungalow is equipped with a small kitchen, we preferred to eat out. The only beach restaurants in Santa Teresa surround Casa Calista. Habanero is 100m beach walk to the south, Banana Beach is 150m walk on the beach to the south and Rancho Itauna is 100m walk on the beach to the north. Only other beach restaurant in Santa Teresa is Rocamar which gathers a huge crowd on Sundays to watch the sunset. You can also walk there but it is about 1km to the north. Another good place to watch the sunset is Brisas Del Mar, up on the hill with amazing views. If you are here for at least a week, rent a car or quad (ATV) and go to the waterfalls in Montezuma. While you are there, dine at Playa de las Artistas. I would do lunch at Anamaya Resort in Montezuma, then go to the waterfalls, then have dinner at Artistas. Glori, the property manager at Casa Calista, is eager to help so you can ask her to make reservations. Koji's, a sushi restaurant, is a must. Thursday nights are Kika night for live music and dancing. Don't bring too many clothes as you will be in swim suit most of the time and shorts and tshirts at night. Temperatures only fluctuate between 70-85F (even in rainy season) so it is a very pleasant climate. Certainly try surfing. Calista is right by the best surfing breaks in the region. If you are new to surfing, I strongly recommend lessons. They can get you up within an hour. Glori can also help with surf lessons. And she can also help you book a couples massage at Calista followed by dinner on the beach prepared just for you by an accomplished chef.
We loved our experience at Calista despite some unfortunate events. I had a stress fracture in my right foot from running on the beach and couldn't step on it. Luckily it happened towards the end of our vacation. The owner Hanit visited us personally and within hours came back with custom made crutches. The care they show their guests is extraordinary. We will be back for sure.
I really cannot say enough about this wonderful place or our wonderful hosts! We spent a week at Calista and never wanted to leave. The cabina is beautifully furnished and the owners truly pay attention to every detail. Calista is clean (maid service daily as well), safe (even has a watchman at night), and genuinely beach front...just feet from the ocean.
Get ready for the entertaining family of resident iguanas, free-roaming horses on the other side of the low beach-hedge (separates you from the public but not high enough to block the view while relaxing in the lounge chairs), and the roar of the ocean.
Probably most important, though, is the quality of the hosting we received. The personal touch was exceptional. If you choose you can have tours, reservations, even meals cooked on the beach arranged for you with only a phone call or text. I never expected to be in constant contact with a "concierge", but it was just so easy! Our contact was Glori, she is so much more than a concierge. She felt like a friend after our first meeting and she genuinely cared that we had an amazing stay. She truly made our trip and we will never forget her!
I highly recommend staying at Calista if you are a party of two. If you are traveling with others, the owners of Calista have other, equally appointed properties to accommodate you. Seek them out, your trip will be one for the books!
We enjoyed our visit to Santa Teresa immensely! Staying at the Calista Bungalow was more than a wonderful place to stay. (It came with unexpected bonuses). It included beautiful/friendly staff who stayed in constant communication (when needed) the entire time. (from booking the bungalow from the USA to our departure at the airport!).
Glori was our concierge (thank-you SO MUCH! You are excellent at your job!). Joanna cleaned each afternoon (Thanks for making me feel like a queen!- you went above and beyond!) Luis, our taxi driver- so professional and a great driver on the dirt and bumpy, mountainous roads! Thanks for keeping us safe! and David, who was security guard each night 6pm to 6am -(I felt safe as we were right on the beach).
The bungalow itself is well designed, - It was just enough space for us- the extra touches made it very enjoyable- the double shower, the safe, the ample porch seating.....
Seeing the ocean from our kingsized bed was awesome.....going to sleep and waking to the sound of the ocean was glorious........The location in Santa Teresa was great...so close to great restaurants (and bakery).
Renting a quad was the best way to get around the area. We enjoyed several of the suggested activities and restaurants (the owner) Hanit and (our concierge) Glori gave -we were not disappointed.
We enjoyed the Hancienda Okra farm; the waterfall near Montazuma; snorkeling at Tortuga island; eating fresh fish and organic foods at several local restaurants! Try "Banana Beach Restaurant"- great cocktails, food, and famous Santa Teresa sunset views! only a few steps up the beach......
Santa Teresa is "Pura Vida" ......We experienced it the whole week we were there. We truly had a difficult time leaving- returning to Texas. We hope to return soon! (hopefully to bring our whole family and stay here or at one of Hanit's other rentals.......)
There are very few places on earth that conjure feelings of home and paradise all at once and Santa Teresa is one of these special places – so much so that you want to imagine yourself living there until forever, despite and may be even partly because of its dirt roads.
Calista is a big reason why Santa Teresa made such a big impression on us, I am sure.
Having one of the two cottages as our home base in Santa Teresa was absolutely perfect. We raced against Hurricane Otto to get there, we stayed for 3 nights, and we nearly cancelled the remainder of our trip to stay here longer.
Calista is situated beach-front on a lovely stretch where you wish the sunset could linger a bit longer. The beach can be explored in either direction, for quite a while. Waves are plentiful and awesome. It’s also very easy to walk into town, which has a surprising number of good eats. There is a grocery store at the foot of the street.
The cottage itself is beautifully crafted and just the right size. Not an inch too small, perfectly intimate for a couple, considered in all the little details. The bed was big and comfy, the two-person shower was fabulous, the kitchenette was very handy, and the ocean-fronting patio and yard was everything I’d wanted it to be. We loved being visited by (ok, spotting) the two shy iguanas who live on the property, while enjoying our breakfast on the patio, or a cold beer in the afternoon.
Last but not least, Hanit the owner and Glori her assistant were wonderful to deal with every step of the way. Glori treated us like old friends - she was generous with her insight, gracious with her time, and genuine with her hospitality. Her enthusiasm for adventure was also infectious!
I didn’t want to leave Calista, and I didn’t want to leave a review for the world to discover Calista. It is truly a wonderful place. We can’t wait to go back :)
We stayed here on our honeymoon for 2 of the 4 nights in the Santa Teresa/Mal Pais area and wish we had booked it for all 4 of nights. It's literally right on the beach. It's everything you need to relax. It's around the corner from great restaurants, shopping etc. There is a bungalow right next door, but no one was there for our stay. Glori is simply amazing, she coordinated all out tours and adventures, dinner reservations etc. We can not wait to plan our next vacation in the villa but this time for longer!
