“Don't stay here”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2005

This is not a nice hotel. First impressions are that it is a friendly, peaceful resort.... You couldn't be more wrong. It's run by a family, who walk around like they own the place - okay, they do! :) But it would be nice if they made the guests feel welcome; you feel like you're an unwanted house guest, imposing on their property!
They rave on about the chef being the best in the area, but quite frankly, he is not. We got raw chicken, often they don't have what's on the menu, and when they do have it it's really not that great.
The rooms are UNBELIEVABLY noisy, the floorboards don't touch the sides in places, so you can quite literally hear the people in the rooms above or below sigh, cough and even breathe... If you want to sleep at all on your holiday, this is not the place to be.
Someone cut their foot by the pool on out first day, and the pool of dried blood was still there when we left 10 days later... nice.
Theft is an issue here; they don't have security on the gates so rooms get broken into quite a bit. The shutters don't lock so people can climb in through the windows; there are no safes in any of the top units, but the bottom units don't have air con.
I could go on, but I won't waste my time.
50 metres down the road is a place called Tropico Latino; it is fantastic. After out first couple of days at Luz de Vida we tried to get a room there, but they are fully booked all the time! If you want to stay in Santa Teresa or Playa Carmen, stay at Tropico Latino - we ate there most days and nights - food is AMAZING, staff were so friendly, it's peaceful, clean and beautiful. Book in advance!
