“Cute and Quaint”
Reviewed 27 April 2014

This hostel is perfect if you are looking for surfing and yoga- just as the guest house says! Depending on what you want to do in Santa Teresa, this location is a little bit far from some of the other restaurants and shops closer to the main part of town. It really hosts a true surfers vibe. It is secluded and quiet, running 4 yoga classes a day. This guest house appears on the older side, but they keep it impeccably clean. The staff are really friendly, yoga teachers enthusiastic, and the cooking facilities are never too crowded. There is no air-con available here, and if your sensitive to the humidity then sleeping may be a problem as there is no salvation from the heat, but hey- pura vida!

I was SO impressed by this guesthouse and property. Whether you are a solo traveler, a couple or traveling with your children there is space for you here. They have shared, private and apartment-style lodgings available. The managers and staff are super friendly and they truly help make your stay in Costa Rica special. You want to go snorkeling? Boom - Julio hooks you up with the best company you could wish for. Newbie wanting to surf? Boom again, as Jenny and Julio find you the nicest, most helpful little surf shop in town to help you learn (Shout out to Palomyllo at Al Chile Surf Shop!). Thanks to those folks I actually caught waves! The yoga at Casa Zen is stellar, with really educated and intuitive teachers and a lovely studio. If you can take an evening class with Jenny, you'll be in paradise for sure. An abundance of local creatures like iguanas will never bother you, but do ensure that you will not be bitten by mosquitoes at this locale. Their presence also tells me that the owners are keeping the area clean and natural. The beach is a few paces from the property, so no problem seeing an epic sunset every single night, then going home for quiet time. There's an amazing loft in the gazebo (?) full of giant pillows, a massage table area, surfboards, hammocks and probably other awesomeness I didn't catch because my only regret is that I didn't stay longer. *And there's a security guy on the property at night! Jenny and Julio have got service dialed-in, I won't hesitate to go back and can't wait to make that happen. *One more thing, I've never had a vacation where I ate so well. Santa Teresa is a community of many expats, and it seems like they all opened a restaurant. From French pastry to Thai perfect to Argentinian beef and empanadas, this 'village' is a special place. Ask Jenny or Julio where to eat, they've got great taste. *I am a woman, I was travelling alone.

Room Tip: This is a guesthouse, with some travelers in shred accommodations. There's something for everyon...

Casa Zen was great. The staff were friendly, the grounds were beautiful, the rooms were well appointed and comfortable. But the real shining star of this place was the kitchen. It's been a month since I stayed there, and I still can't get over it. A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL, PUBLIC USE KITCHEN IN A HOTEL. And not only that, they have a HUGE assortment of kitchen tools and utensils that make using the space a huge pleasure. If you like to cook - especially in places as expensive as Santa Teresa - do yourself the favor and stay here!

The location is fantastic and the owners are so lovely. I really enjoyed taking Jen's yoga classes, and my husband was able to hire a surf board through the guest house. Our room was clean, the bathrooms were clean, and it felt very safe and secure.

Casa Zen was our favorite stay in Costa Rica. Very relaxed vibe and the staff went out of their way to help us plan the rest of our trip. It's in a nice quiet location near the beach and is close to good places to eat and a supermarket. Outstanding value for being so close to the beach. We felt very welcome, secure, and serene. Would have liked to stay longer - maybe next time.

This place was my favourite out of all the places we stayed in CR after backpacking for three weeks.

- It was clean, staff was helpful, it was peaceful, had movie night, breakfast is great (bread, jam, fruit) and yoga services are great!
- Stayed in two bed room with a friend and it had great space, fan and good beds.
- Lounge area is very comfortable and clean - read there lots (careful with the iguanas).
- Wifi could be stronger but power supply is great and safe in rooms are good too.
- Lights from outside hallway are outside and sometimes people leave them on so can be very bright.
- Was quiet at night - not many people stay up late since surfing is best in AM!
- I did 4 days of yoga on the beach and it was fantastic. The beach is so close and feels safe to walk at night in the dark.
- It is close to restaurants and shops, you can walk everywhere.
- Did not rent surfboards here but bought a boogie board. Shop in front of hostel has cheaper prices if you are looking for boogie boards.
