“Wonderful view, great small hotel”
Reviewed 18 January 2010

We loved our time at Casa MarBella! When we arrived and saw was a fantastic view the hotel had and how comfortable to room were and how relaxing and enjoyable the town of Malpais is, we were sorry we didn't have more time to stay! The pool is fantastic and just the thing to beat the heat while still soaking in the sun while admiring the Pacific. Our room was comfortable and had a fun innovative decorative style which added to it. The town of Malpais is a fantastic low-key surfer town. While we don't surf and usually don't really fit in with the "surfer crowd", we were so relaxed that we really enjoyed ourselves in this small, off the beaten path locale. Only caveat to Casa MarBella - in order to have such wonderful views and thus such a great small hotel, they are located up on a hill that requires you have 4-wheel drive or at least a pretty heavy car to get you up the steep gravel/sand road. If we were to return (as we hope to!), we would come by bus from the ferry and just rent an ATV when going anywhere outside town. That being said, parking our car on the road was safe and we weren't very stressed about it considering our surroundings. Highly Recommend Casa MarBella

We have stayed at Casa Marbella twice in the past two years. This is an excellent place for vacationing couples, and the suites would be very appropriate for families. The hotel is located on a hillside, and the view overlooks jungle and the Pacific Ocean. There is a large deck that is great for yoga. We have recommended this hotel to friends, and all reviews have come back very positive. Can't wait to return!

Casa Marbella is a beautiful hotel. It is small and personal and in a great location. The view overlooking the ocean is breathtaking and their infinity pool is the perfect place to end an evening. The town is friendly, safe and fun. We rented a four-wheeler for the week as our mode of transportation, which is perfect for the area's terrain! Stephanie is great with restaurant suggestions as well as helping to plan day trips. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable. This is the perfect place to relax, but, be sure to bring books, there's no t.v.!

I will definitely return!

This really is a great hotel, picturesque view and beautiful lodging. The owners were on vacation while we were there, but Stephanie was great at answering emails and offering suggestions when we booked in advance. Their staff doesn't speak much English but I know a little Spanish so it wasn't a problem. The hotel is right in the center of town, conveniently located right up from the beach and the one road thats Santa Teresa with about a dozen or so outdoor restaurants. Stephanie also arranged the couple's massage which was great.

My one complaint / word-of-warning to others is actually abuot Nicoya penninsula, not the hotel. It is pretty, but it is a pain to get to. We drove in from Monteverde and out to Manuel Antonio and the drive with the ferry takes up most of a day each way. Since we were in C.R. during the rainy/green/slow season when all the beaches aren't very crowded, I think we would both suggest skipping Nicoya and going to a beach somewhere easier to get to like Manuel Antonio (the beach there is nice also, not crowded in September, but probably packed Dec-April). Also, booking the ferry is not a pleasant experience, the ticket counters are only open at certain times, which results in a lot of waiting around and then more waiting in long lines. Also beware there are a few scam artists claiming to work for the ferrys that roam around the ticketing areas.

Also, walking around Santa Teresa is just a dirt road with no place really to walk without dodging traffic. Whereas Montezuma is off the main highway, so it is better laid out for walking.

The cleanliness could have been a little better, I killed a spider in the shower and it was still there when we left three days later, but upon arrival the room seem clean.

But once you are there, it is great. I'd recommend this if you are going for a week or it is your getaway vacation, or you are a surfer (great surf). But not for a short stop, its just to time-consuming to get to.

Pros:
Great view
Beautiful hotel
Awesome pool
Will organize massage and surf rentals
laidback atmosphere
Friendly management
AC in the rooms

Cons:
Steep hill to hike up down
Doors have quite large cracks above floor, so there are some insects that make it in.

We spent three nights in the larger condo with another couple in August. We were a little worried about the construction that was going on at the time, but it was a fabulous place stay. We probably swam in their pool once a day. The quaint town was fun to explore. We were happy that we stayed in Santa Teresa vs Malpais. We rode our bicycles into Malpais....there is no town. So if you stay in Malpais and wanted to venture out of your hotel, it would be more of a committment. Staying at Casa Marbella is on the edge of the tiny town and was an easy walk for us in the mornings and evening. Older couples and travelers might struggle with walking up the hill, but it really isn't that bad if you're in ok shape. Getting to Santa Teresa is definitely a harder place to get to and can be more expensive due to the traveling costs, but we don't regret going.

On a side note....I was really worried when I was told that we needed to pay in cash if we were to skip the middle man and pay Stephanie instead. It put up a lot of red flags and we almost didn't choose this hotel due to that one little aspect. I contacted many people through trip advisor and was reassured that they had done the same thing. Things worked out just fine.

Unfortunately, we were only able to stay at Casa Marbella for three nights. We both said that if we ever get back to Costa Rica, it would be a great place to start our journey. Santa Teresa is not the easiest place to get to, but it is well worth the journey. Casa Marbella is set up on the hill above the dusty and more crowded (thought not very) main road. (We missed it the first time...it's not long after you enter town!! Remember this as it can save you some annoyance. :)) The pictures posted do not do it justice. The view is breathtaking and the pool is an ideal place to watch the sunset (second only to the beaches below). Stephanie and Jim were very hospitable. Stephanie was quick to respond to e-mails and eager to help us with any questions I had about Casa Marbella, Santa Teresa, and Costa Rica in general. She was quick to set up any tours/activities that we wanted to do. My husband took a surf lesson from Jim and loved it. Santa Teresa is a great place to relax; it's quiet, off the beaten path, and has ideal waves for surfing and swimming. There can't be a better place to stay than Casa Marbella. You won't regret it! We hope to return!

Having just come from Nosara and having a beautiful house with friends and our own beach access, I was skeptical that our accommodation in Santa Teresa could be matched. I was wrong. Or should I say I was more than pleasantly surprised....
We showed up in our rental 4 x 4 and were promptly greeted by Milo, the resident pooch and all round ambassador to the Villa. Upon looking around at the beautiful amenities we were greeted by our hosts Jim and Stephanie. From there we were led to our "modest" luxury condo equipped with modern furnishings, first rate appliances, and more room than we could have possibly needed. Only to be matched by the stunning views and a welcomed breeze from the ocean as we watched the treetops sway lazily.
It was on....
Our routine for the next 8 days was very regimented, early morning surf session in the glassiest waves I have seen since indo, breakfast and relaxing by the pool, yoga, lunch , relaxing, a game of cards, evening sunset surf session, cocktails and dinner at the town's various restaurants with first class cuisine. Not a bad way to spend your vacation.
I was most grateful to have accommodation slightly off the main road and up the hill (5 min walk) as the cooler temperatures gave sanctuary to the relentless heat and dust you will find walking down the strip. I will say the locals do an excellent job to keep the dust to a minimum (water down the road, etc...) but it can be a bit tough on the eyes.
Over all, I would say that Casa Marbella rivals any 5 star accommodation I have been to and the hands on approach in which Jim and Stephanie conduct their business is second to none. Congrats to them both on a first class operation and we will return to Santa Teresa next year for a repeat visit.
Pura Vida!
