This hotel has an awesome setting on a hill. Close to shops, grocery and beach, but a short walk to a quiet get away. We stayed in a two room suite with a small kitchen and a balcony with the hammock where you could listen to the ocean (my favorite) There is so much stuff to do in the area, the owners Jim and Stephanie were so helpful with restaurant recommendations and things to do. They assisted us with renting four wheelers, chartered a fishing trip (must due) and took a surfing lesson with Jim, he is a great instructor. Some friends of ours met us there and it was so hard to leave we all stayed for an additional night.

The hotel is pristine, and the owners (Jim & Stephanie) are great! We were driving through the northwest region of Costa Rica for a couple weeks on our honeymoon in the beginning of November, and we are so blessed to have spent our last 4 nights at Casa Marbella. The hotel is not right on the sand, but there are multiple options for beach access at the bottom of the hill, right across the street. You definitely want to have a car if you are going to be staying in Santa Teresa, because if you aren't exploring on a daily basis, you are missing out on a lot!
Next door (with private entrance from the hotel) is Las Brisas, which is by far the best place to eat in the area! The chef writes a new menu daily on a chalkboard and uses the best, freshest local ingredients to wow you on a daily basis. Oh yes, and it is also the best sunset view in the area, located on a platform atop a hill. Sipping down a tasty cocktail or glass of wine is a must at sunset even if you aren't eating there that night!
As for the Casa Marbella rooms, they are impeccable. We had a room with a little kitchen, king size comfy bed, and was super clean and stylish. You can probably find places in town for half the price, but for anything that is anywhere near the same quality of MarBella, be ready to pay a lot more.
The owners are a surfer and his wife, so they have a decent quiver of boards that you can rent by the day. They'll even tell you the right spots to paddle out at depending on the tides and swell direction. Due to the location, there seems to be swell pretty much every day! Seriously, head high is small for their standards, and it stays pretty clean all day long.
If you are on an adventure through Costa Rica, then this place is a must, but be careful because you probably won't want to leave ... Pura Vida!

I can't imagine a nicer place to stay near Santa Teresa and Mal Pais. My wife and I stayed at Casa Marbella for 5 days in October and had an amazing stay. Being October, we were apprehensive about the weather, but we only had heavy rain for one day and the other 4 days it rained for less than an hour. We heeded the advice of other travelers and stayed in the 3 bedroom condo and I would do it again in a heartbeat; unbeatable views from every room, nice kitchen and living area with lots of open space, comfortable bed, and your own private balcony with a table, adirondack chairs, and hammock. All of the other units are on the ground floor and resemble studio apts. Less space than the condo, but they have everything you need for 2-4 people. We came to relax and surf and everything exceeded our expectations.

Location: PHENOMENAL. It's a 5 minute walk to the beach (Playa Carmen), into town, and most of the restaurants in the area. Casa Marbella is set back a hundred yards or so from the main road, so the only noise you get is the ocean, birds, iguanas, and the occasional howler monkey. You also get the best views in the area.

Service: OUTSTANDING! Jim is an awesome host. He is a great surfer, very involved in his community, and full of great advice. He arranged massages for us on the yoga deck and took us surfing on 3 days. He has a selection of about 20 surfboards (long, short, fish, hybrid) that are all in great condition. The surf was heavier than what we were used to (Southern CA) and he did his best to make sure that we were comfortable and got the most out of our time on the water. He let us know about some off-the-beaten-path beaches and hikes that were some of the highlights of our trip. This area is very special to Jim and his family and they do an amazing job of sharing this with their guests.

Overall: The rooms, views, pool, location, and service are hard to match. We highly recommend this place and hope to be back in the future. Keep in mind that you are in the jungle and off-the-beaten-path (at least for now). If you can put up with the occasional insect and bumpy roads, you'll be rewarded with a memorable trip.

We stayed here the first four nights of our honeymoon. Pretty much our only complaint was that we were located in front of Playa Carmen and NOT in Santa Teresa proper -- which was about a 20 minute walk in the mud (if it's rainy season, which it was). For my fiancé who's a beginner surfer, this was a bit disappointing.

Otherwise, we loved our little villa. We had an amazing view over the jungle and out at the beach and felt like we had the privacy we needed. It was nicely decorated and we also had our own little kitchen which was handy for preparing breakfast and snacks. The shower was a bit weak, though.

The infinity pool is simply gorgeous.

The owners were pretty courteous and helpful with everything we needed but were not very chatty and kept to themselves most of the time.

I would NOT recommend staying here if you are considering taking the 'normal' rooms. The rooms are quite small and the only window faces out into the public pool area and there is not much privacy at all.

I also imagine that in high season it can get a bit noisy and the place is pretty small.

Located close to many of the amenities in Santa Teresa, and a five minute walk to the beach, it sits atop a cliff and overlooks the ocean. Its an absolutely beautiful, small boutique hotel. The rooms are newly renovated, the staff are friendly and the fact that its a small hotel makes you feel right at home. And its only minutes away from incredible surf and beaches!! We were only supposed to stay for five days, and increased our trip to 10 days because we loved the hotel so much! We would recommend this to place to anyone visiting the area, and will likely return again soon!

We stumbled upon Casa Marbella by chance as we arrived in Mal Pais for a surf trip. We had intended to stay in the area for only a few days but it was so good we couldn't leave... We got amazing and varied waves both on the beachbreaks and reefs thanks to Jim and Stephanie's local knowledge. They also pointed us in the direction of the best food in the area and activity highlights. The hotel itself is a real retreat from the town in terms of feeling close but very safe and secure. Jim and Stephannie were really friendly and helpful and the rooms were immaculate and quiet each day.

Our time in Mal Pais was definately the highlight of my time in Costa Rica and I would recommend Casa Marbella to anyone who goes there.
